Currently I'm running Win 7 Ultimate (4770K, 8 GB ram, ASRock Extreme 4, 2x GTX 750Ti FTW, Samsung 840 Pro 128GB system disk & another for data, MS Office 2007, BOINC 7.50),and I'm seriously thinking about upgrading to Win 10 tech preview and want to get some thoughts from others, like how often does it crash, how BOINC runs, can I still keep my Office suite, will I have to re-install BOINC & and Lunatics, etc, etc.

Well you would not really want to "upgrade" to the Tech Preview. If you want Windows 10 it is going to be released in a few months. Installing the released version over a Beta/Tech Preview normally requires a clean install.

There are several things about Windows 10 I like infinity over Windows 8.x, but it is no Windows 7.

Office 2000 runs fine on Windows 10. So I would expect Office 2007 to be fine as well. I did have to force Windows to use a driver that was older than the inbox for my ATI HD3450 GPU to run Collatz, but other than that I had no problems.

But... But... But...

Those are 14 YEARS OLD and 7 years OLD!

And yet you are tempted by the latest and greatest up-to-the-minute thing that Microsoft has to offer for the underlying OS?...

Never did appreciate MS Marketing ;-)

Strange world? :-)

More seriously though, this latest example does highlight the question why there is so much grief 'upgrading' whether you would like to or not...

XP for me...
I only run 7 on my daily driver because there are a few things that XP does not do well anymore.

All of my crunch only rigs are running XP.

Using Office 200 is more of a practical issue. At work we continue to use it in our test lab mostly because we don't have to deal with install key & activation issues. As we load clean OS images with no software in them. Newer versions of office do have a trail mode. However it only lets you open the apps a total of 15 times. Given the only reason we need to app is to print a document. Having to deal with installation issues just slows things down.

Also my feeling for the MS ribbon interface are best not said in front of small children.

Message 1665508 - Posted: 15 Apr 2015, 4:09:41 UTC - in response to Message 1664694.

Hi Dean,

I am running Windows 10 build 10041. So far it is running better than expected. I do like it better than 8.1 so far. I am not running full SETI cache in case something happens in the next 3 days. If all works well, then I will go full throttle.

Best of luck, it crashed on me, then locked me out of the SSD it was installed on using UEFI..

Kept booting to an error message, then rebooting. Lost a load of WU for a couple of projects.. Daft of me to use a Beta OS to run stuff on.

Eventually removed the ssd, put it in another rig, disabled UEFI and managed to get into the drive.. Ended up reformatting it and its now a spare:-)
Still lost all the WU etc..

I may look at Win 10 when the final release is out, not before. Even review sites have had problems with the test/preview releases so far.

Regards,
Cliff,

Nobody really knows what happened to 9. Various rumours have been circulated, including this and in a more likely scenario, this.

This article explains it pretty nicely, except that it was already announced they were bumping the kernel version from 6.4 to 10 as well. So Windows 10 will be using kernel version 10, skipping kernel versions 7, 8, and 9.

Traditionally in the past, major version numbers were meant to indicate that older software may not work on a newer version, however, this time around, since 10 is still based on the 6.x kernel, most software shouldn't have a problem.

Personally, I really like Windows 10 and I'll be upgrading to the full version very soon after it's release.

I was told that Win 9 is actually Win 8.1.

Also one has to keep on updating ones PC, if one goes to install the Win 10 preview, or one morning one will find they have a dead PC, as an article on the HardOCP states. Me I think I'll stick with 7 for a bit, let 10 get the kinks worked out first.

I think you are missing a point: this is the Pro Technical Preview of Windows 10, more often referred to as a Beta release. It is not the RTM code.
If all goes as normal you are going to have to trash (full install, not upgrade) your OS if you are running this.
However if you are running one of the full versions of Windows you will only have to do an upgrade to the released Windows 10.
I run Windows 10 on a computer that only runs SETI on it. Others I know run it in a separate partition for testing and familiarization purposes. And I get to play with Project Spartan. I think it is so much better than Window 8.1 which is what came on my new laptops. I really can not wait to upgrade these laptops as I really do not like 8.1. It is not a desktop OS as released.

Reference to no longer supporting early versions, even if you have the latest Beta version it is going to fall into the no longer working rather quickly after the RTM is released.

Funny, but I already knew that, I read what the HardOCP said, since you are merely repeating what was said there.. Nice try though..

Message 1671454 - Posted: 29 Apr 2015, 12:35:08 UTC

Just had a "Windows 10" e-mail from MS, following the link to a page with a video, play the video and it seems the "New Operating" system is called "Windows" no mention of "10" and the voice over says "Windows" three times.

I wonder if this is the last "numbered" release and from now on it will simply be "Windows" you will then install or purchase add-ons and updates as needed.

Anyone else seen the video?

Yeah I got the same email, I don't want to be beta tester, their idea of a free OS, is I think only for the beta. If I'm wrong, I'm ok with that.
