I used the free on-line TT for my 1040 and 540. Because I had no real income; just SSDI, it refused to let me file electronically. I had to print out my 1040 and 540. All information is correct; as usual. Like Mark, I've never had any trouble with TT; paid or free. As I anticipated, the new health question was on the 1040, Line 38, "Did you have health insurance for the entire year of 2014? (Medical, Medicare...)" I checked "Yes". Therefore, proving that I needed to file; as I was told by my dad's Tax guy last year, and my Insurance Broker this year. If you didn't have health insurance for 2014, you will pay a fine in next year's filing of taxes. This is why I chose to file this year. I didn't want to have to pay a fine next year, when I clearly have viable insurance. (Medicare.) If the Supreme Court strikes down the Individual Mandate this year; then, I won't have to file next year, or ever, as long as I'm not working. So, we will see what happens later this year. Good luck, everyone. :-) TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

You have no taxable income and did not go thru the Marketplace. You are covered via Medical and NOT required to file a return. @ALL Feel free to PM me to clear up any Tax questions. My advise is free. Been doing my own for 35 yrs, work/paid wise 14. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Makes no difference Scott. Then WHY does the 1040 state Medical and Medicare as examples of acceptable insurance??? I'm not making this up!!! It was stated as I quoted it in my original post... Therefore, this year is the first year that EVERYONE MUST prove they have medical insurance... That's why I filed, that's why I will file again; unless the Supreme Court strikes down the Individual Mandate. Once struck down, I will NEVER have to file again, unless I work and receive money for that work yielding a W-2, or 1099 for the year worked. If I hadn't filed this year, then next year I would have had a fine from the IRS! Why else would the 1040 state the examples of Medical and Medicare is viable proof of insurance - Line 38 of the 1040??? Very frustrating and very confusing for the layperson since you are stating that I didn't have to file, when all evidence points to the contrary. I'm NOT trying to argue, I'm just stating my case with the 1040 as proof and evidence that I had to file. If I didn't have to file, as you state, then WHY would the 1040 Line 38 show Medical and Medicare as viable health insurance and proof of coverage??? As I see it, it is a CYA move for me to file to make sure that I'm NOT penalized by the IRS next year. Even my Insurance Broker for my Medicare Supplement, (Anthem Blue Cross), states that I had to file this year. Why would she lie??? I don't think she would... I've been dealing with her since 2008, and she's helped me with Medicare, and Anthem Blue cross over the years since 2008. I don't think you would lie either; but, somewhere, somehow, there's some VERY LARGE discrepancies, and misinformation. Again, as a CYA maneuver I choose to file, and keep filing until the Individual Mandate is struck down by the Supreme Court. While you say that I don't have to file, it didn't hurt that I did file. It's just paperwork that the IRS will look at and file away. TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Makes no difference Scott. Scott, you didn't have to file, because AFIK your income was below the threshold that requires you to file. See page 6 and Chart A on page 7 of the instructions. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf If you don't have to file, you don't have to file! |

Thank you Gary. That is why you need to consult a registered Tax Preparer. The insurance brokers are only licensed to give advice on insurance, for them to advise with regards to taxes is illegal. Same applies to me. Evenso I can help you get coverage, you have to choose your own. I am licened by the IRS, California and NY. Other states don't have that perticular requirement in place. Back on topic http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/personalfinance/fraud-alert-what-turbotax-users-need-to-know-now/ar-BBhDuog?ocid=iehp Turbo Tax has been a haven for years for fraudsters. I have stopped many in my 14 yrs as a paid preparer. How, that is between me, the IRS and the State of California. As I said, my advise is free. Trying to reach the IRS is hours on hold, if you even can get thru. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Tax question: I started doing my return on Turbotax yesterday and got to a point where I needed to check something on last year's return, which I didn't have with me. When I found last year's and looked through it for the bit of info I needed, I noticed that on Schedule A, it says you can deduct either state income tax or sales tax from your federal tax. Am I interpreting that correctly? You can't deduct both types? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Is it just not being careful enough about keeping itself from being used fraudulently? Is it innocent? I finished my federal and paid for it, not taking the "pay out of my refund" option. Then I went through the state... and trashed it without filing because the fee was even higher than the fed. Illinois' own online filing site is pretty good. THE IRS KNOWS WHAT COMPUTER YOU ARE USING -- AND THAT MIGHT BE A GOOD THING The Internal Revenue Service is preparing to give taxpayers and tax preparers new identity-theft protections for filing online returns, partly because ID fraud has cost the U.S. Treasury nearly $6 billion. |

Tax question: Thats why I pay a real tax profesional to do my taxes. I was audtited twice by the IRS. Lost the first one by doinging it myself. Won the second by having a PRO do my taxes ever since. You get what you pay for.
Old James |

Thanks James. We are registered with the IRS, have to have a certain amount of training, be current on our own taxes, registered in States that have that requirement and up to date on most tax law changes. By most I mean, personal return I am current on, Corporation and Partnerships, well no. Cudos to those who do their own taxes, but do yourself a favor and read Pub 17 first on everything that may impact your tax situation. I have done my own for 36 years and paid for 14 years. I only got challenged once personally and won. Professionally a bit more, but not much. Honesty is the key here and proof. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Your welcome Uli. I havent done my own taxes since 1983. That was the I was audited for the first time. i failed to include a stipend I recived for going to a government sponsored class I attendend. And for the record dont ever ever blow off a letter from the IRS saying you owe them money. The interest rolls fast down hill if you do. From that day onward I have gladly paid a Tax pro to do my taxes. The young lady that does mine now has been doing it for 14 years. I trust her.
Old James |
