Or maybe it would be best to split between different databases, like Boinc and science. Obviously I don't understand all that's happening behind the scenes, so some of this may be rubbish. The Master database (which keeps track of which WUs have been sent out to which hosts, which have come back, etc.) is separate from the Seti and AP science databases (which store the outcome of the crunching). For info about the actual hardware, have you looked at the Server Status Page, to which there is a link on the home page? AstroPulse WUs started downloading... ;) You just got a resend is all, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=1628185124, because the 1st person timed out, so don't get carried away there. ;-) Cheers. |

Any idea how to get on the resend list? My rigs are starting to live up to my avatar's motto. STAY THIRSTY, MY FRIENDS......... |

Yes, I've looked at the hardware specs on the Server Status page. I summarize it as follows: Total Cores/Cpus -- 88 Total RAM -- 708GB Total Disk Space -- unknown So, with these numbers, a couple of large physical servers, like Oracle/Sun X4-8's (6TB RAM/120Cores/9.6TB internal disk (max) -- these are 5U servers) could virtualize all of these servers with room to spare in a two-node cluster (meaning one node for each current server on each physical server). This would allow for a boatload of capabilities and still have room to spare! If I remember correctly, most of the storage is already external, but not having a clue how much keeps us in the dark a bit. Yes, I know these servers aren't cheap. Maybe we could get Oracle to donate some and throw in upgrades to the MySQL DB software while they're at it. It would also require a bit of a re-design of the server infrastructure, but... And NO, I'm not criticizing or arm-chair-quarterbacking what all the staff do with what they've got. Just something to think about. Cheers! Neil |

Any idea about how long this current situation will continue, when the server problems will be solved and when WUs will resume? No criticism, just trying to decide whether to join another project till this all blows over. Thanks. Steve Gaber Oldsmar, FL |

If I read between the lines of Eric and Matt's posts correctly, [I'm guessing], there will be new data from Arecibo at some point in the not immediate future. When the shipping container is full of hard drives, which won't be days, but several weeks. The monkey wrench is when will the GBT data may be available. At present that requires programming support, read $$$ for a paycheck. After that it would go live on Seti Beta to make sure all the bugs are worked out. At that time our dedicated GPU guru's will work on optimized clients. Finally it would roll out at main. So for planning, I wouldn't count on anything but re-sends until next year although they might still find a few bits and pieces of data tapes that were not sent out previously. What I'm going to suggest is if any of you decide to shut down rigs that you send the money you save on the electric bill to Seti as a donation to help get the GBT code written. I have not checked with the powers that be what their needs are for this or if you can restrict a donation to GBT only. If that is your desire check with Eric before you send it. |

I'm with you there, Stevan - the lack of informative updates is deafening. There have been updates.Maybe not as much as you or I would like. But If you take the time and read the appropriate threads, They are there. I think this is the longest Ive seen this project down. But ive only been here on the boards since late 2008. Its not the end of the world that wa dont have anything to crunch. Im just glad we can still come to the boards and chat with each other. I get antsy when the forums go down. Its not a sin to have a backup project! I have two. Milkyway runs on two of my machines and Einstein on one. I belive in both projects but Seti is my first love. As for communication. It is what it is. I will ask you though. Have you ever taken a gander at the chat rooms of the projects I mentioned? There a freaking ghost town. Sorry but as soon as Seti gets work back no matter how long it takes, Those other projects get NNT set. [/quote] Old James |

I don't fault the S@H project managers. These guys are volunteers who do this heavy duty work on their own time. Plus, they work under severe budget constraints. IMHO, we don't have the right to criticize them or blame them for equipment failures, server issues, etc. They do the best they can. Having said that, S@H is the best-administered BOINC project I have seen and has better communications than some. I used to crunch the now-defunct Orbit, but that was highly unstable with frequent long periods of down time and minimal communications from managers. Now I'm doing Asteroids, which is somewhere in between S@H and Orbit in those respects. So I'm looking. I want to contribute to meaningful projects that offer significant benefits to humanity. Don't wanna come across as a Philistine, but I think some BOINC projects are frivolous. Probably the greatest societal impact would come from the medical/biological projects, but they don't interest me as much as SETI. Steve Gaber Oldsmar, FL |

If you use CPUs, there is a plenty to choose from... If you use GPUs, there is a GPUgrid... While we wait, help others...and when the SETI@home returns, just click "No more tasks" on the Project page... Hope it helps... ;) non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

... this is the LONGEST downtime or simply lack of work units that I've ever seen since 1999!!! Either you guys have really short memories, or mine is going nuts on me. I seem to recall that a few years ago, we went several MONTHS without new data to crunch, due to a failure of something or other. I think it started about this time of year and ran until almost the middle of the following year. Am I wrong? The last extended downtime was November 2012. I recalled that I had posted in the thread about it back then. So did a quick search of my posts and found it on November 23rd of 2012. Lasted 2-3 weeks due to problems with the scheduler consistently crashing. Also, this isn't directed at anyone or any group in particular. It's more of a reminder, as I've seen a number of posts not necessarily complaining about a lack of information on the current situation, but the beginnings of it - a rumbling that has the potential to escalate should this outage continue for an extended period. For me, a simple "we have a problem, here's what's happening and we're working on it" is sufficient. I'd much rather the SETI folks spend their time working on and fixing the problem, instead of explaining every little detail about what they're doing. They don't get paid for what they do with the SETI program, and actually could walk away from it at any time. A single update every day, or two, or three is fine, but not expected. I'd rather the next update that get's posted be the one that says "it's fixed". Meanwhile, folks like Eric have to eat too, so they have paying jobs that take priority not because they want to - but because they occasionally get hungry and need to eat. Unfortunately, this outage will most likely keep them from enjoying their Thanksgiving meal much as it did back in 2012 - they just can't stop thinking about it long enough to really enjoy themselves over the holidays. I think it's a fair bet that come black Friday, some of these folks will be so irritated by the continuing outage, they come in on their holiday weekend (including Friday) to work on it. "Dedication" just isn't a strong enough word to describe how these folks feel about this program. Enough of my ranting. I'll quit now. |

What a lot of people also forget that if the AP science database runs again, there isn't a whole lot of AP tapes left to do (for as far as i know) so eventually we will run out of those too. We've reached the point that we surpassed the amount of computer power to realtime run the application therfore we will have times without work untill there is a bigger data volume, a other program with it's own calculations (as AP). On the other hand, look at other projects which you think has potential or your interest. I've chosen theSkynet as another project. Although this program is only for getting the experience in distributed computing and likely to run out of work(thus I am going to look for a third project) for that matter I do keep it in the loop. Along with seti@home even if they don't have work available. with the right priority settings they will go and do stuff once able. Just my thought on this all. |
