Hey Guys & Gals,

Well you kids should be here in Buffalo. Snow is up to 6-7 Feet in some parts of town! I have lived here all my life almost 62 years, never seen anything as bad as this. Even the blizzard of 77 wasn't anywhere near the snows we're getting. And more to come tonight. I'll take the cold anytime over this amount of white n precipitation!

I have a request. My Mom passed on last Saturday @ 6:10 AM. She was a young 96 1/2 years old. She would like some work units please. Funny, she used to tell us that her Mom (my Grandmother who I knew in my early years) told her that she was born with tons of snow and very cold temperatures. (She was born in January) so I'm telling everyone that she was to blame (Smile) for all this snow when she decided to leave our world.

OK, thanks for listening. True Story. I really miss her and shes only been gone 5 days, sigh.

Max

Well, the silver lining is that I will be donating my cycles to World Community Grid if I run out of SETI jobs.

I always apportion 10% of my computing cycles anyway to causes to help here on earth. I'll just up it to the entire ball of digital wax until SETI work units return.

Just an idea but have you all ever considered trying one of the crowd funding site to get donations for the sole purpose of buying time on telescopes for the Seti project.
If people will pony up 5 buck to help people build a "better ice chest" to the tune of a million plus, I am sure there would be tremendous interest in funding
Seti research.
Plus you would be reaching a whole new group of people(young) who you have never reached by your other methods.
Then there is the "geek" factor, seems that these days people like to help geeks.

Worth to consider indeed.

I loaded the latest version of BOINC, as well as the Oracle VM, and I have received work. My only problem was the "Oracle" trying to access my network-connections. That caused me to freeze/crash off the net. I disabled it. Problem solved.

Keep tinkering!

Would it be possible or worthwhile to re-send _2 or _3 copies of tasks that have been sent to hosts that appear to be inactive for long periods, e.g. 21 or 30 days ?

Tasks have deadlines and are automatically re-sent when they time out.

Thanks for that reply, I am aware of the deadlines, and currently only have one host attached to S@H. It is probably one of the slowest hosts in regular use, I never have problems meeting S@H deadlines although I do occasionally with LHC.

I meant to suggest EARLY Re-Sends of some or all the tasks that have not been received within a specified time period to be set by the project staff, as I suspect many or most of these would eventually be re-sent when they did hit the deadline. If the original _0 or _1 Task is still received within the original deadline, it would still receive credit, even if it was the 3rd result received.

I think it would take quite a bit of the guys' time to make that happen, and then eventually quite a bit more of their time to manually purge all the ones that would end up in limbo, for no real gain to the project itself.

Maybe it's time to set up a 10 step program for members suffering withdrawal?

Is that a "10" step program in duodecimal (base twelve)?

Just arrived home, used the BOINC Manager "Project Commands -> Update facility".

That searched for and loaded 2 Seti@home v7 tasks.

The PC is motoring through both of those, and I hope there are more to follow.

Thanks to the fixers.

Cheers from New Zealand :)

How ever long it takes. ;-)

Either save power or pick a backup project or 2. :-)

Main page states that the database crashed. You might get dribbles of work, Maybe.
Ive been running backup projects since last Sunday because of no work.

Greetings:

This question may not be posted in the proper forum, but I don't find one where the Seti server hardware/software/systems is up for discussion. So here goes...

Would the Seti MySQL and Informix database activity get any benefit other than high availability from clustering?

My experience with databases is that some types of database activity are able to benefit significantly from clustering while some just need simple crunching capabilities and clustering doesn't really help much (again, other than redundancy).

With the continuing issues with hardware around the lab, I can't help but think that maybe breaking the databases into smaller instances on multiple servers (each hosting multiple smaller database instances) would provide for some redundancy while spreading the load and possibly increasing throughput.

While ultimately this would likely require additional hardware. I think a test using Oscar and Carolyn could be a good starting point. Split the two large instances on individual boxes between the two servers resulting in four smaller instances running on two clustered nodes. If Oscar pukes, the clustered node of the Boinc master database still running on Carolyn could keep the database available (in a somewhat lesser fashion) until fail-over to the replica on Carolyn can happen or the replica can be shutdown on Carolyn and additional resources allocated to the master instance to bring it back up to speed. Actually, with a clustered master database, the replica could be a clone on a smaller box that was only updated/replicated to periodically.

Or maybe it would be best to split between different databases, like Boinc and science. Obviously I don't understand all that's happening behind the scenes, so some of this may be rubbish.

Just something I thought I'd throw out to the crew. Maybe this wouldn't be at all feasible with the Seti databases.

On another topic, is there a page somewhere that shows storage in use by the Seti servers? Or can someone provide some storage specs and statistics (growth, etc)?

Cheers!

Neil

I'm almost sure that there used to be a webpage here many years ago, but maybe I was hallucinating back then, that had that info that you're asking for. It's probably been deleted or lost by now, or if it's still around, would be in great need of updating.

Cheers.

Well, I only come here when I'm out of work - which hasn't been for over a year now. Having read the thread, I see why. It's 12:45am EST Saturday, and it looks like all my SETI WUs were crunched and ack'd just before midnight here. Oh well, things have auto-switched to Einstein, and it'll just start crunching SETI once the WUs are available I guess.
