Gary, if you want to go help. Please by all means, don't let us stop you. But when you come back, it's our job to make sure you don't die. And to that end, we also would like to keep your family healthy as well. So, if you choose to be selfish, then you will understand we would rather keep you someplace safe where IF you start having 3 gallons of explosive diarrhea a day, forceful vomitus and other involuntary movements, that it's someplace where your family, or grandchildren aren't likely to come into contact with it. Because, here's the thing. By the time you start to show symptoms, it's already to late to get the family out of the house. You just force them into 21 days of isolation. If that's not Selfish, then you tell me what it is. Pride can be a harmful thing. Now onto other topics. State Department doesn't deny that they sent a memo discussing bring in Non-American Eboli patients into the USA for treatment. Hmmmm....... |
Made my point. NO ONE is talking about The Science. Academic's, as you Post Confirms, truly do not understand the responsibilities of Power. How to effectively deal with the concerns (whether valid, or not) of The People and Society's fears. Insulting? No. Just true.
I was objecting to the tone of your comments - that academics are in some way impaired in their ability to participate in government or decision making. I find that to be an offensive stereotype. Your point about effective communication of what we know about the virus is correct. The overall response has been poorly communicated to the public by all sides, including the CDC/government/states/media etc. Anyway, I see little fear and panic among the US population. Most of them seem smarter about the risks than you give them credit for. |

I disagree. Many doctors/tech/scientists are effective communicators (Neil deGrasse Tyson comes to mind) and decision makers. The skill set you describe is not exclusive to one specific group. I agree with your second part: Scientists/doctors can only provide facts to decision makers to help them address issues. Whether a fact is "politically" acceptable, and whether decision makers can or want to make this fact politically acceptable, is the real issue. |

hmm? CDC admits droplets from a sneeze could spread Ebola Ebola is a lot easier to catch than health officials have admitted — and can be contracted by contact with a doorknob contaminated by a sneeze from an infected person an hour or more before, experts told The Post Tuesday. http://nypost.com/2014/10/29/cdc-admits-droplets-from-a-sneeze-could-spread-ebola/ |

hmm? Those droplets are bodily fluids distributed by particles, I'd consider the underlined not a hypothesis, but a fact. rOZZ Music Pictures |

Crisis Far From Over WHO: Ebola Epidemic in Liberia 'May' Be Slowing, But Crisis Far From Over DAKAR, Senegal - More than 13,000 people have been infected with Ebola in West Africa, and 70 percent of them are dying, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. And there is a tiny piece of good news -- the epidemic may be slowing slightly in parts of Liberia. But WHO warned the epidemic is far from over. There are empty beds in treatment centers and the number of burials in Liberia has declined, Dr. Bruce Aylward, the assistant director-general for WHO, told reporters. He said there may be as much as a 25 percent week-on-week reduction in cases in Liberia. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola-virus-outbreak/who-ebola-epidemic-liberia-may-be-slowing-crisis-far-over-n236536 |

Even you will be destroyed, Dr. HO HUM, after the Sun becomes a red giant and Mars will be the only place to survive, let's say for another million years. Will we have to flee from Ebola then? Kaci Hickox a nurse who was confined against her will at a New Jersey hospital after returning from West Africa where she treated Ebola patients said she’s prepared to go to court if the state of Maine tries to quarantine her. This is why I believe that military personnel are a better choice for treating and caring for those who are infected with the ebola virus. They can be ordered to stay in quarantine for whatever time period is necessary to prevent the spread of the disease. That nurse has no way of knowing for sure that she has not contracted ebola until it has been at least 21 days since her last contact. Personally I don't think it is too much to ask anyone to abide by the safety protocols so as to prevent the chance of spreading the disease. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Here's what I don't get about this whole Ebola thing: On the news I hear that a definitive test for Ebola has been developed that takes only a few hours. If true then I say why the 21 -day quarantine. If the quarantine is the only way to be sure then I am all for it and it should be mandated to protect the population from an outbreak. I say this because I think that too many people are too glib about the "Science" of Ebola. What "science" ?? I see mostly screw-ups and contradictory opinion from doctors as well as politicians. |

Here's what I don't get about this whole Ebola thing: Most tests rely on PCR amplification of Ebola virus DNA from a blood sample. It will usually take 1-3 days after symptoms have appeared for there to be sufficient virus for detection. Thus the test can only confirm (after symptoms have appeared) rather than predict who has the virus. You could theoretically test negative for 15 days post exposure, then test positive. |

Kaci Hickox a nurse who was confined against her will at a New Jersey hospital after returning from West Africa where she treated Ebola patients said she’s prepared to go to court if the state of Maine tries to quarantine her. If returning medical workers are going to be subjected to quarantine and treated to this much public scrutiny, then they are not going to want to either travel to west africa to help or to treat patients here in the US. For example, do we need to quarantine all the medical staff treating the doctor in New York? This whole approach is counter productive. You may be right, in that military personnel are the best option. |

in that military personnel are the best option Oh I totally agree. The military is totally better prepare for this. It's their job to deal with biological agents that someone expose them to in the hopes of killing them. So they do take it seriously. As for the public scrutiny. There have been other persons who have come back from helping to treat people in these countries and have done the quarantine that we haven't heard about. Why? Because they choose not to make a big deal out of it. They keep it quiet, they do it, they finish and no one ever hears about it. This nurse. Sounds like she is looking for her 15 minutes of fame. That place where that nurse works..patients are refusing to go there if she is working. Take the paid time off.. do a mini vacation some place and then return to work. But she wants to make a big deal out of it and have her fame. SMH. She and these other that don't know how to stay put are giving the medical profession a bad reputation. |
