I cannot get seti running on this computer. I had it til about 60 days ago when I took it to the shop for some reason or other. It still shows but is not running and boinc has dissapeared. does anyone recognize this symptom? When I try to re-install boinc I get "error 1500". when I click on install I get, unable to install because the installer is busy on another item. I then go to task manager to see what is running but nothing is running that I can identify as an installer. Obviously the fault does not lie with seti. The techs at the shop where I bought this machine haven't a clue. Any help? Dave Nelson Dave Nelson |

The installer process to look for is named "msiexec.exe", a.k.a. the MicroSoft Installer EXECutive. If you see a bunch of those running and they don't seem to be working, kill them. Note that they may appear stuck if they're busy installing other things like for Windows Updates. If you're certain that those are hung processes from you trying to launch BOINC, then they may be safe to kill. MSI Error 1500 is the error given when trying to launch multiple copies of msiexec.exe and it is unable to launch a duplicate installer process for the same package. So that error is unfortunately unhelpful for root cause analysis. Do you have issues installing any other software package? |

The best way I ever found to remedy a stuck Windows Installer was a (forced) shutdown & reboot. |

Thanks; I'm not sure what you mean by forced shutdown & reboot. Should I get a couple of programs running and then just cut the power? I don't have a win7 disk to use to reboot, I think it was installed out of the cloud. Is there a way to reboot without a disc? Dave Nelson |

No, just do a normal shutdown, but when Windows tells you that certain programs are stuck, hampering the shutdown, tell it to force them closed. |

It's fixed. I took it into the shop this morning expecting to leave it there but they were intrigued by the problem and started working on it right away, in between other customers coming and going and the phone ringing. I watched everything they did but those guys work so fast that I was unable to follow. No charge. Dave Nelson |

Installation problems 7.2.42 An fyi and a temporary fix... Problems installing BOINC version 7.2.42 Windows 32-bit - Windows 7 ~March 2014. I had terrible problems installing the latest cut of BOIC - either with or without Virtual Box. May be machine-specific, but fyi the error is "Error 2203.Database: C\Windows\Installer\161103.ipi. Cannot open database file. System error - 2147287035". I haven't had problems in the past (decade). My fix was eventually to activate the hidden Win 7 admin account, install from there as available to all user accounts, then close it down again. (The usual "install as administrator" Win 7 click does not work). Seems to be working now. A PIA though. Also of note, I could not uninstall either BOIN or Virtual Box without some assistance from a MS Windows cleanup program. Came out of the blue - no system changes at this end. seems to be something to do with BOINC_user network names and permissions to the Win install folder. Since you could not install nor uninstall, and since BOINC uses the Microsoft Installer platform included with Windows, that directly suggests your local MSI database was corrupt. If you search the web for "msi 2147287035 Windows 7", you can see various other packages that failed to install due to this error. |
