I like bees. I will usually feed the bees during the cold months if the
temperature get high enough. I'll make something like hummingbird
nectar only a little thicker, with more sugar. Then I put it in a
modified hummingbird feeder. The bees can empty a hummingbird
feeder in a couple of hours!

Here's a video I made. I actually stood very close to the feeder for
this video. The original is much longer. I only posted part of it.

That is such a good idea! :) My wingless bumble bee I rescued about a month ago is still doing very well - even my cats seem quite fond of watching him potter about now instead of trying to hunt him through the perspex :)

Not sure I'd have the nerve for this though...

I spent 9 years doing seasonal work for a local government agency that tested citrus trees for the Tristeza virus family. We collected leaves from trees to test for tristeza virus DNA. Spent a LOT of time in groves with bee hives.

The 3 Ds:

Don't wear white clothing or floral scents - the bees will mistake you for a flower.

Don't run near bees - they will think you are a threat and react accordingly.

Don't swat at them - that REALLY gets them angry.

We screened all employees for allergies to bees stings, and also did our best to weed out those who were afraid of bees. One spring I had a woman who had a panic attack as soon as we parked next to a grove with bee hives in it. I had to call a Supervisor to come take her home.

Neither I nor any of my crews got stung during those 9 Spring seasons. Just walk slow, move slow, keep your collar buttoned, and don't panic if one lands on you.

One day before I knew that I didn't have a liver
I was stung by a yellow jacket hornet,
for five minutes I worried about the enhanced
colours I was seeing. Five minutes after that
I had forgotten that I had even been stung.
About thirty minutes later I couldn't even
identify the spot where I had been hit by the
stinger......

I'm allergic to penicillin too, which may explain why I don't like blue cheese salad dressing, they are both made from the same bacteria...

I, too, am allergic to penicillin; however, I am able to take cephalosporins which are related to penicillin. I, also, also don't like blue cheese.

I don't like bleu cheese either, and I'm not allergic to any meds.

It was awhile ago, but I seem to recall thinking there was something wrong
with the mantis because its wings were exposed.

They do sometimes spread their wings when perceiving something as a threat I think - or it may have been a forgetful type that forgot it was planning to take off :)

Saw the stick insect earlier, but pic seems to have gone now. Was good though :)

and now it's come back... :)

I miss them catching rides on me... and lizards.... and chameleons... best I do here is finding a spider spinning a web across my face... or a midge killing itself in my eyes. :(

Giant Hornets are Killing People!
"So it could all sound a tad hysterical, but the Asian giant hornets really do pose quite a threat. Chinese officials have reportedly advised the public to avoid walking through wooded areas in the Shaanxi province after 28 people have been killed and hundreds seriously injured by the hornets’ neurotoxin-carrying venom this year. With reports of individuals in remote areas being stung over 200 times, the venom can, in large doses, cause anaphylactic shock and renal failure." - http://inhabitat.com/giant-hornets-are-killing-people-and-eating-bees-in-china/

I heard about that a little while ago - scary looking things aren't they? Never been too fond of hornets to be honest...

I think we discussed these here awhile back. Or perhaps on the critter group
before Dave created this group. I think we also established that these are in
the US somewhere, too, didn't we?
