Last time we had a major application rollout, Eric deployed a load-spreading techique called 'coral cache' (see message 800906, or search for that phrase). It relies on your ISP transparently redirecting download requests to another server - and some ISPs and proxies refuse to do that. The redirects are only applied to requests for application files - where everyone wants a copy of the same file, so very few files (and unchanging ones, at that) have to be held in the cache. Looking at the cricket graphs, the apps aren't being sent out from Berkeley, so I suspect the cache is in operation this time too. If everyone is failing to download, then there's a configuration problem and we'll have to wait for Eric. If the problem only affects some people, then try to stop using any proxy you may have set up. If that fails, changing ISP would be a possible (but drastic) solution. Otherwise, we could try to set up a mirror download site, I suppose, if anyone has a host and can afford the bandwidth? |

It would appear that some are having problems and others not. |

Ah, i've got vague memories of people having similar download issues with major version upgrades in the past. If the problem only affects some people, then try to stop using any proxy you may have set up. If that fails, changing ISP would be a possible (but drastic) solution. Otherwise, we could try to set up a mirror download site, I suppose, if anyone has a host and can afford the bandwidth? Haven't used a proxy for ages, might have to give it a go again if the files are still there in the morning. Grant Darwin NT |

If everyone is failing to download, then there's a configuration problem and we'll have to wait for Eric. Looks like we need an alternative route, then. Usually, the apps Eric deploys here are identical to the most recent Beta apps - if my ISP lets me, I'll try to test out that theory. That gives one possible alternative source - if it checks out, I can post manual download links for people to try. Edit - in that post from 2008, Eric mentions firewalls as another possible source of trouble. I'm guessing he means the sort of corporate hardware firewall that big companies use, not personal software firewalls. If that applies to you, trying downloading again when you get home, or nip out to Starbucks for a coffee and use their WiFi. Once you have the files, they can be copied to other machines by sneakernet or LAN. |

OK- i just put in a proxy, and i'm getting the same effect msattler was getting. After a couple of seconds the download timesout- but during those couple of seconds the files are downloading. I'm going to wait until next week and the dust settles before I change over to V7, but if I run out of V6 work in that time my backup projects can have a bit of a workout. ;-) Cheers. |

Good idea. I changed because I ran out of GPU work and couldn't get any more. It may have been there but it wasn't landing here...so I flipped to v7. |

Oh for crying out loud. After a huge amount of clicking retry & using a proxy, it stopped working. So i did away with the proxy, and then they started downloading by themselves. *bangs head on desk* Grant Darwin NT |

I wrote this elsewhere as well: I just had a "cuda_opend_100" AP WU land on the box with the 295s. Is there a way to stop AP landing on this box ?? |

Just to note, some of the cuda50 WUs landing on the 295s are taking ~80 minutes to complete ... |

Is there going to be an app_info file for the v7 and what do I need to do to get it. I am a novice when doing things like that I suggest you wait for the installer we are working on. If you really want to do it yourself all you need to know is: <app> <name>setiathome_v7</name> </app> and <app_version> <app_name>setiathome_v7</app_name> <version_num>700</version_num> the ati apps went out with higher version numbers, do check the app page. AKv8b2 isn't v7 compatible! I don't take any responsability for anybody trashing their cache and/or their tasks due to poor app_info.xml fiddling. I wrote this elsewhere as well: You can only opt out of AP altogether. If you want to opt out of AP for GPU _only_ you need an app_info.xml. A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read. (Mark Twain) |

Is it possible to download the new optimized apps somewhere without the installer, i.e. just a zip file with all needed files inside, like it was possible before? Some of us don't need installers, that do more than it's actually needed... When we have caught our colletive breath we plan to do packages with the full SIMD range. Until then, when the installer is out, you can use 7z to extract single files out of the installer.exe A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read. (Mark Twain) |

That's what I thought might be the case. I had AP running on the i7 3930K but not on the others. Oh well, just aborted the AP WU ... If any more come through I'll just give them the same treatment ... |

Just converted my GTX460 cruncher back to stock and got my first 37 v7 tasks, one of which is happily crunching now. Where is the app_config.xml file that I need to edit to run 2 WU at a time located? It does not appear to be in the projects/seti folder that app_info.xml was in. If I need to create one from scratch can someone post one and advise what needs changing to adjust the number of WU's being run? |

As the kitties are still running their beloved 6.10.58 Boinc, they shall have to be content just to get the new apps running until the installer is ready and they can go back to opti configuration. Thank you for your efforts, Richard. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |
