Weird story... I also already thought of attaching every computer at work to BOINC... I've been wondering about that. You sure you only use your own computers, Mark? ;) rOZZ Music Pictures |

Weird story... I also already thought of attaching every computer at work to BOINC... All here, all in my own home, at my own cost. I ran Seti on my work computer, with my boss's knowledge and consent, for a few months when I first signed on back in 2000. That was before I built my first computer at home. Seti is why I built that first 233mmx rig. Since then, it's all been done right here in the kitty crunching den. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I recall Mark once posted a picture of his Kitties - quite impressive, especially "Ice Cold" (or was it "Frozen"?) the freon cooled beast. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

I recall Mark once posted a picture of his Kitties - quite impressive, especially "Ice Cold" (or was it "Frozen"?) the freon cooled beast. That would have been the original 'Frozen Penny' (Penryn). Still running, although with a newer processor. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

My Penny (air cooled) is still u=running, original CPU. It's the GPU that helps on other projects ... It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

That's the one - as Julie says "Quite impressive" I would never do it again...... It was quite effective on older processors, when the architecture was much larger than today's and CPUs dissipated more power, thus generating more heat. When cooled down to -30c or so, you could overclock them much higher than when using more conventional cooling means because you could keep the core temperatures in check. Nowadays, CPU speeds have increased, architecture size has decreased, and power usage and thus heat generation has also decreased. Much less involved and more power efficient cooling methods will easily get to the speeds I am at with the right chip. Without the muss and fuss and mess of packing the CPU socket and surrounding areas on the motherboard with gobs of clear silicone grease to prevent component killing condensation. OR the additional 500w or so of electricity it takes to run the compressor. The current 'Frozen One' is an i7 920. Rated at 2.67Ghz, it is currently clocked at 4.25Ghz at a running temperature of -27.5 centigrade. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

And just a couple of other notes, whilst I am thinking about them... The compressor unit was custom built for me some kid out east who was somewhere between high school and college. Met up with him on a CPU freezing fanatics site. I had already tried it with a stock unit and burnt it out after a few months. He built this from scratch and the trick back then was to get just the right mix of freon based refrigerants......you could not use straight R12 or R this or R that. You had to blend different refrigerants with different properties to get where you wanted to go...a fine art, it was, I garontee. Took him a couple of months to get it right. You wanted to get the maximum cooling and lowest temperature possible, BUT.... You also had to get the right compressor capacity for the heat load, AND.... You also had to get a combination of the two that would not destroy the compressor if the heat load from the CPU went away. Like if the CPU locked up or the OS halted. Because if you didn't, the compressor would be destroyed by 'slugging'... I could give the long winded version that might take several minutes or more to type. But I am sure most of you don't know a whit about how refrigeration works..LOL. IF I really get asked to, I could post the details. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

This is what you have to do just before you seat the cooling puck. Squishy, it is. Where the cooling meets the road.. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Place seems very empty the last few days. No Cafe visitors for some grub and a drink? It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

That gave us a bit of a chance to do a bit of re-stocking, training a few new bar staff. Those Wombats were hard work compared to the Koala... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Hope the wombats are up to the job, I've just put an order in for a mixed grill. Member of the People Encouraging Niceness In Society club. |

Your food is down to the catering staff, not the bar staff. Monday did mutter something, but I didn't quite catch what he said.... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |
