... They're just pissed because the world isn't beating a path to the Linux door. Hardly. And you're welcome to stay deluded lost in the World of Microsoft Marketing. Even your King Gorilla Balmer, before dancing his last dance with your hard earned cash, laughed/cried how the new wave of mobile devices and cloud computing escaped the iron fist of Microsoft's might to give rise to a new dawn of user devices. The great majority of mobile devices run on a Linux kernel. All a new hope? Or will Google fall to the dark side to become Microsoft reborn?... ;-) Meanwhile, the users pay more?... :-( IT is what we allow it to be... Hardly. And you're welcome to stay deluded lost in the World of Microsoft Marketing. Yet another irksome insult. Every Windows user is merely deluded by Microsoft Marketing. Such a broad claim, but I proffer as a Certified Microsoft Systems Administrator, and an IT Professional, that I can judge for myself what is marketing vs. reality when it comes to Microsoft. Even your King Gorilla Balmer, before dancing his last dance with your hard earned cash, laughed/cried how the new wave of mobile devices and cloud computing escaped the iron fist of Microsoft's might to give rise to a new dawn of user devices. It wouldn't be the first time Microsoft missed the boat. The popularity of the internet comes to mind. Yet they were agile enough to turn around and make it in the new world. Or will Google fall to the dark side to become Microsoft reborn?... Yes. I say this as a Google Chrome and GMail user. (Note that the use of "deluded" in not an insult... Just as most would not describe religion an insult either.) Non-sequitur. Delusion implies a strong belief in something despite evidence to the contrary. Using Microsoft products, or even enjoying using Microsoft products is not an act of delusion. It is merely a point of view. Would that imply that your strong belief in Linux as an OS is a delusion, despite evidence that as it's popularity grows, security flaws are being found at an increasing rate? |

At least with Linux I don't have to keep renting Windows... What exactly does Windows give you, that Linux does not already provide? |

At least with Linux I don't have to keep renting Windows... A familiarity and an in-depth knowledge of the OS. |

At least with Linux I don't have to keep renting Windows... Which reminds me, You keep harping on it being free. And it is. 99% 0f the human population dreams of getting free stuff. But yet you Linux guys cant even give away your master OS to the unwashed masses. Why is that? When you can figure that out then maybe the world will start to use it. [/quote] Old James |

Ever wonder why microsoft.com runs on Linux? Nope, and here's why: Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Ever wonder why microsoft.com runs on Linux? Various parts of Microsoft unavoidably run/use Linux. Hell, Microsoft even sell Linux systems/software under various guises... For your example, that stems from long ago from: www.microsoft.com runs Linux? Up to a point ... ... And no way are Akamai ever going to move away from their world beating Linux powered systems that front and protect the Microsoft stuff. IT is what we make it... No! Servers are a good application for Linux, What we have been talking about are desktop OS's for home use, where Windows is the better choice. Exceeeeeepppt... French National Police Switch 37,000 Desktop PCs to Linux France’s National Gendarmerie — a national law enforcement agency — is now running 37,000 desktop PCs with a custom version of the Linux operating system, and by summer of next year, the agency plans to move all 72,000 of its desktop machines to the open source OS. Linux is now the primary means of running computer servers inside the data centers that drive the web’s biggest services, from Google to Amazon to Facebook, but it has struggled to replace Microsoft Windows on the desktop. The news from the Gendarmerie could be a sign that this is changing. The agency claims the total cost of ownership of Linux and open source applications is about 40 percent less than proprietary software from Microsoft... ... Many organizations invested heavily in Windows technologies such as Active X, which only runs on Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser... ... But the growing use of web based applications instead of native desktop applications could make Linux a more viable operating system for not just government agencies, but all large organizations. The Gendarmerie provides a roadmap. So... All a game of how soon the iron fist of proprietary lock-in can be broken to gain user freedom... IT is what we make it... with a custom version of the Linux operating system Are you saying you've left your Windows system exactly as it was when you installed it? Or have you installed a few extra programs, thus making it a custom system? Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

with a custom version of the Linux operating system I can't make, nor can you, a custom version of windows. I can change user options e.g. background picture, but that is not a custom version of windows. |

No! Servers are a good application for Linux, What we have been talking about are desktop OS's for home use, where Windows is the better choice. It might be a better choice, for YOU. *MY* choice is to have an operating system that *I* control..not an operating systems that controls ME. |

with a custom version of the Linux operating system But you *CAN* make your Linux "custom"..no one needs a favorite distro. |

with a custom version of the Linux operating system Thank you for confirming that it doesn't work out of the box and must be customized. |
