In desperation, is this a new angle on "any publicity is good publicity"?... Microsoft honcho pleads with media: 'Stop picking on us!' 'Windows 8 is a good product ... really!' Microsoft has taken quite a pounding in the press over Windows 8, and it has only intensified the rumors that the planned update to the OS might roll back some of its more controversial features. But Redmond has had quite enough now, and it wants it all to stop. ... ... Microsoft's Frank X. Shaw tweeted a response to this piece on Friday afternoon. In desperation, is this a new angle on "any publicity is good publicity"?... I'm reminded of this article from this time last year: Windows 8 may drive me to Linux ... How wrong I was. This incarnation of Windows 8 is, if anything, even worse than the previous one — because it suggests this is what Microsoft actually intends to release. Based on its current form, Windows 8 represents an unconscionable, and barely comprehensible, rejection of the values Microsoft has spent the last 26 years perfecting in its visual operating system. It doesn’t make computers easier to navigate and understand, it makes them more difficult, paradoxically by making the interface so brain-dead simple that it can’t do anything someone with a brain might actually want. ... So what happened in the meantime? Blind arrogance? Blind faith? Or others' more positive innovations? IT is what we make it... I wonder how Microsoft are going to spin this one?... Sorry but posting the same link in two threads just seems like gloating to me, and it's very petty. We all know Linux has is uses. I am surprised that NASA have 140 laptops running er XP. Linus is an industrial type OS that my company used for all major servers and projects. I would say NASA are just catching up. ID: 1367977 · |

With the press run for "Windows 8" that Microsoft is gaining recently, I'm really wondering how they can spin that one. Meanwhile so far, Apple and Google are a little quiet for the moment. Really is all press good press exposure? I am surprised that NASA have 140 laptops running er XP. Linus is an industrial type OS that my company used for all major servers and projects. I would say NASA are just catching up. There's an awful lot of WinXP still around with those who have never needed to 'upgrade' to suffer new Windows licenses. Sometimes, proprietary lock-in can get to be too onerous... Upgrades and new licenses are always a big headache to add to whatever expense :-( IT is what we make it... I'm not sure how serious this is, but rather apt, quite a giggle, and scarily true :-( Discontinue Internet Explorer To those that just use the internet: Those that have to put the internet together typically have to do whatever website design for the main group of web browsers. Then, as a very expensive second step, lots of special code must be added to work around the various funkiness for each individual Internet Explorer browser version... All merely my own personal observations as ever... IT is what we make it... WHY? Like us, they're not perfect but they do bring to the fore issues with government & companies that skirt the law... ..for example, BAFTA, Tesco not paying Internees thereby ignoring the minimum wage law. Anything or anyone that upsets your "perfect little world" is to be ignored? I thought you were into this "21st Century" thinking? ID: 1370637 · |

I've just downloaded Internet Exploder 10 64 bit and it is certainly very fast. Interesting about IE 10, I have not used IE for many years. At the 60+ club where I teach, logging on to hotmail takes about 10 seconds with Chrome and up to a minute with IE no idea why, but obviously no on there uses it. I have graduated past Chrome and Superbird to Comodo Dragon, definately the best and fastest I have used, based on Chrome but doesn't phone home. As to "change.org" they got my e-mail address from somewhere and kept sending me e-mails galore to "sign" this or that petition. I don't deal with junk mail so they just get blocked and deleted. I am using IE 10 with Win7 x64, and the browser starts to the Home page in about 5 seconds. I find it quick ... God that is slow .... Just tested on my Mac, Safari opens in 1.5 sec and Firefox in 1 sec. There is a reason it is called winDOZE.

Technology (or should that be Marketing?) moves on, people don't? More than half of Windows 8 users just treat it like Windows 7 For all Microsoft's hype about The Interface Formerly Known As Metro (TIFKAM), more than half of all Windows 8 users ignore the new Start Screen and treat the OS as if it were Windows 7... In my opinion these people are missing out. I have for the first time been using Win 8 on a touch screen laptop. For an "iPad" person like myself it is brilliant, I was using the "metro" interface and the standard desktop and it is quicker and much more intuitive. Now I just need to justify getting a touch screen laptop!!! A company like MS has to make a decision at some point, so they did. They could have given users a choice, but you can see where that would have ended, they would have sold only old GUI versions, at least this way some people know at least the more modern interface is available. The majority of Windows users are not able to make the change, some WILL not change and so MS will probably have to go back to offering a 10 year old interface as the way forward. My broadband connection is via 2 way satellite (signal auctioning a mouse click needs to travel 4x22,000 miles, with a latency each way of 800 ms). Under these circumstances I find IE 10 quick. When using Firefox, under the same conditions, it still takes up to 10 seconds. It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues
