Both windows PC's and Mac's are running on a UNIX kernel. It was that way for years once they figured out where to put the GUI.

Interesting. I wonder what Martin who claims *nix can't be hacked will have to say about this ...

I'd say you're trolling and well off your trolly for the sake of silly trolling.

(Note for those who are not so antiquated: Electric trams and buses many years ago used a 'trolly' to pick up power from overhead lines. The trolly jumping or falling off rewarded errant drivers with no power...)

To stir the fun:

The "GNU" of GNU/Linux is a recursive acronym: "GNU is Not Unix";

You have a choice of many different window managers and desktops for Linux systems. You even have available the look and feel of Windows whilst running Linux if you really wanted. Such is the unfettered non-dongled non-strangled freedom of choice. It's all in the "GUI" (Graphical User Interface);

Android (Bionic/Linux) has pretty much taken over the world of smartphones (just hope that Google doesn't become emboldened to enslave us);

And until rather recently, all the then variants of Windows used the same code for the TCP/IP stack (used for the network/internet) as developed by BSD Unix developers. The author of that code had to abandon his email address due to the phenomenal amount of spam from malware-ridden Windows systems including that email address in their scavenged victims lists. The email address was given to offer helpful support as was commonly done by code authors of the day.

Actually wondering if anyone was going to talk about Windows having a *nix kernal in it. AFIK it doesn't. It may have hooks in it to support *nix like apps, but isn't it still http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS-DOS under the hood, and we know that was a steal of CP/M. Aren't there still a few DOS apps out there?

I doubt they took a *nix and wrote hooks to make DOS run, but perhaps they did in one of their revision cycles.

In any case it is bloatware. Needs to have all the legacy crap sliced out, all the stuff that was for single user / single app at a time O/S. In today's world, that is the security hole as a single user / single app box didn't need security instead relying on physical security.

Thank the Maker; I'm saved (accredited to C3-P0). I still have a PC that runs DOS 6.2, Win 3.1 and Win 95, plays CDs, DVDs and old games. Why on Earth would I need some newer, more power hungry, drive sapping OS, when what is there, does the job it was supposed to do? Each to their own.

Told you!

Oh no Microsoft you changed they way my 10 year old operating system works, I now have to click 3 times to get to my desktop!! Oh it's terrible sob sob!!

If you showed someone who had only ever used Windows XP Windows 7 it would only take them a few moments to get into it.

Windows 8 is progress, pity the human condition hates progress.

I use Windows 8 every day on my laptop it is BETTER than Win 7 but different!!

Well done Microsoft for TRYING to drag operating systems into the modern world, pity most customers can't see the wood for the trees.

Windows 8 update: Microsoft crisis or business as usual?

(Link converted to article title.)

There's also:

Microsoft: All RIGHT, you can have your Start button back

Big changes to "key" parts of Windows 8 are coming after Microsoft admitted it “could and should have done more”...

Redmond probes new IE 8 vulnerability

Microsoft has confirmed a bug in Internet Explorer 8, CVE-2013-1347, which exposes user machines to remote code execution...

... also notes that an exploit has been seen in the wild...

... Microsoft is considering whether to issue an out-of-cycle patch for the vulnerability.

A predictable and jaundiced but still apt comment to that, too good not to list, is:

Shocked, I say, shocked!!

Microsoft software has an exploited vulnerability? Shocked, I say.

So, are we taking wagers on when the next one appears and has already taken advantage of?

Let's see, when is "Patch Tuesday"?

Japan's XP migration solution: Remove network cable

A Japanese local government has come up with a rather unusual solution to the problem of Windows XP migration – keep the venerable OS but disconnect the remaining PCs running it from the internet. ...

That's one very uncomfortable set of headlines!

All the more so for being a continuing story. Is that really where you want to go?

Except...

Over fifteen years of development and we have IT and home computing stereo-typed as being a farcical mess and users EXPECT things not to work and to be expensive, or so obscure as to be something no less than voodoo magic...

And as for the continuous security scares and continuing anti-virus/anti-malware fiasco...

Is that really the IT we want?

This gives a good summary of the state of play and strategy shaping Windows 8:

Windows 8 update...

... there's clearly a lot of pushback from consumers and corporates about the radical change the firm wants to make in the user interface.

"The broader issue is that Microsoft is building an operating system designed with a touchscreen in mind. That's essential for its future because computing is shifting to tablets and mobile, where Microsoft has been irrelevant."

"What in effect they've done is compromise the desktop experience to create a great tablet and mobile experience. The problem is that it's the desktop buyers that pay for everything right now."

Is that the IT you want?

Now that Steve Jobs is gone from Apple even they have had a missstep. Take their app for maps as an example.

I have no problem using a touch screeen on my smart phone or when I use the wifes tablet. But whe im at home sitting more than an arms length from my computer screen Ill be darned if im going to touch the stupid screen everytime I want to do something. The freaking mouse works just fine.

It way past time for the CEO's and board of directors to to tell the bean counters to go pound it.

Im sure MS is only doing what they are doing because the consumer is voting with the pocketbook.

+1

Years ago, we had companies going out of their way to induce consumers to enter their premises instead of their rivals to purchase from them - Consumers were king!

Now its the other way around - companies dictating to consumers...

..time to wake up people.

I still find it weird that people think Win 8 ONLY works with touch screen and not a mouse or you have to make a choice!

IT DOES BOTH! Why when sitting at home more than an arms length from the screen would you want a touch screen? You wouldn't! Just use the mouse, it will work fine. Why when sitting on a train with a tablet would you want to use a keyboard and mouse, you wouldn't, just touch the screen! Have you ever tried to use Win7 on a touch screen? I have, I own a Win 7 tablet, it's not fun.

I hate the fact that MS has a monopoly and can charge what it likes but what I see and hear is mostly anti MS hype, people WANT to see MS fail, in many ways I really hope it does. Then finally LINUX can take it's proper place as the worlds premier operating system, well that's what I'm told

However, for Linux to become the premier operating system it has to become a universal O/S without fanatical geeks proclaiming it's "dubious" supremacy!
