In the middle of a group of work units my computer died. I have replaced it and the # of cores and the graphics chip is different. How does the main computer know about the changes? Is there something I should do? South Walker MEGA 1999 |

In the middle of a group of work units my computer died. I have replaced it and the # of cores and the graphics chip is different. It knows when you attached it to the project. As so much is different the project treats it as a different computer, because it is different. It has to be different as it will have different run time and FLOP count estimates. Your credits go with your user name so you still have full credit for the work the old computer did. ![]() |

The system just treats it as another machine under your account. You will see that many crunchers have a number of machines running. When you look at the computers under your account you will see there are now 2 machines listed. The old Core2 Duo, and the new I7. You will keep the credits from the old machine, and get the pending ones as they are validated. The ones the machine had not returned when it died will eventually time out and be reissued to other machines. Once all those are completed you can delete the old machine from the list, but you still keep the credits. Ian |

Thanks for the reply. Could someone tell me what kind of work units would be appropriate for the type of replacement computer I purchased? Thanks again to all. South Walker MEGA 1999 |

Could someone tell me what kind of work units would be appropriate for the type of replacement computer I purchased? Check your S@H preferences from your account webpage and turn off the gpu option, because BOINC is not recognizing any gpu that may be in that computer. Then keep S@H Enhanced selected. It's up to you whether you want to run Astropulse v6 (long run times on cpu.) Don't select the old AP 5 or S@H v7 at this time - V7 will be coming "soon". Then enjoy the new computer! Another thought - I see you still have only one task. The settings for how much work you want are reversed in BOINC 7 vs. BOINC 6 that you ran on the old computer. Thus, the first number (Minimum work buffer in BOINC 7) needs to be the number of days you want and the second (max. additional work buffer) shouild be a small amount of extra work - I use .01. You can set those in BOINC's preferences and they will override what you have on the website's computing preferences page. Project's about to go down for the weekly maintenence window. Could someone tell me what kind of work units would be appropriate for the type of replacement computer I purchased? Turning off 'Use Nvidia GPU' or 'Use ATI GPU' will have no effect, his new computer doesn't have a GPU reported, Boinc will only ask for GPU work if a GPU is detected, so telling him to to turn it off is pointless, What it will probably do is give him needless messages from the scheduler saying there is Nvidia or ATI work available, but his preferences are set to not accept it.
