a tea brewed from the leaves of the coca plant is a good herbal remedy against altitude sickness.

and the mode of action is quite different if you have an alkaline lysis first - chewing with potash.

Remember at one point in time almost all of the sodas we know today were medicinal tonics. Ginger ale was a real ginger and naturally carbonated spring water healing tonic. Dr. Pepper was a 28 different healing herbs put together. Coca Cola – Coca (the same plant cocaine is made from) is tonic herb that has 19 alkaloids in it. The "native herbal remedy" tactic has been tried before -- unsuccessfully. One case was in the courts and newspapers off and on for about a decade. BAC of about .5%. Killed a whole family by driving on the wrong side of the interstate.
