I don't have to look over my shoulder every day, do you?

Since the government owns everything you have no reason to look over your shoulder. Here I need to worry that the government is going to steal what I own. Physical stuff via taxes or intangible stuff like privacy and the pursuit of happiness.

I still say that if you are an innocent member of the public, and not up to no good, what have you to fear? I couldn't give a stuff if MI5 or 6 want to listen in or monitor my skype calls, they are welcome to. They can also tap my phone if they want, good luck to them. They'll be bored silly.

Thats assuming that those lurking on your data are just trying to blame you about something you did wrong...
But, you should know, there are scammers and other criminals out there that could use your "inocent" personal information for a lot of bad things:

-Hello, Im friend of your sister, I was around here and thought I can say hello...
-How is doing your wife Anne, your sister told me she was very upset about the dispute with your neighbour?
-Is the cat recovered now after his "accident"?
-Indeed, I need to call my mother but my phone battery is dead... May I pass, to make a phone call? ...

What rights do you have that an act of government cannot take away?

Until we stop looking at governments as an all powerful entity, debates on their actions will continue to infinity.

Software=Government & Government=Software! Good software provides productivity & good government provides prudence.

We all know what bad software & bad government provides, but the one over riding point is that it is all provided by man!

There will always be those who seek power & greed over their fellow man & until that comes to an end, we will continue as we are.

Rights? The same rights as those in government, but those wish to safeguard their snouts in the trough so invent laws/rules to prevent others from attaining what they have.

While it may be the case that a Brit does not understand the values of rights and privacy, I see no reason to emulate this lack of understanding.

Oi! I do not resemble that remark!

Yes you do:

Either you accept that there are good reasons for insisting upon the right to privacy or you do not understand that value of such a right. As you said there is no reason for the right to privacy, it seems you fall in the latter category. As Gary noted, your failure to understand the value of the right is likely the result of a lack of exposure to its benefits.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Very simply:

Without privacy, everyone becomes open to abuse by others.

IIRC didn't Chris have a problem with Rupert Murdoch listening to some voice mails? Seems like a bit of a double standard.

Rupert is not a government entity. Different story, therefore I see no double standard.

Neither is your ISP, your Telco, etc., the places were this data is mined from. If it is kept, it will get out.

While on his side of the pond perhaps the police can't be forced to hand it over with a freedom of information request, on this side of the pond they can, making it all public record anyway.

Gary not all priests/nuns are pedophiles...please don't make such a broad statement. Yes, Catholicism has issues (and substantial ones) but to paint all Catholic clergy as abusers is a bit overkill.

Okay, we will take that down a notch and just say co-conspirators. Down at the bottom rung I am sure there are some who had their eyes and ears closed and didn't know. At the next level up all the way to the top they are just as guilty, dirty and filthy as the ones doing it. Speaks volumes about the church being an agent of Satan and their clergy being minions of Satan. You should ask yourself what you are if you took communion from a minion of Satan.

As if we haven't got enough to worry about, we now get this:

UN to control Internet?

They kept that quiet long enough.

"Reports in the Russian press have suggested the Kremlin and others wanted control of key internet systems passed to a UN agency."

I liked his answer that he dose not like putting things to a vote, Because that just makes winners and losers. Giving the UN any sort of power like that is just asking for trouble.

If this wasn't so serious, I'd die laughing.....

..don't people have any common sense left?

Apple Maps is life-threatening in Australian heat

Brain cells, Ordance Survey Map, common sense would've avoided those situations.

It raises a thought though with today's society sueing everyone in sight for the sightest mishap.....

...How would Apple fare if they were sued for a fatality if one occurred?

Why would they be sued? Some idiot's expectation of perfection? Didn't read the disclaimer? Believe the disclaimer. Hey, can I sue if the island isn't there?
