wanting to blame the price increases for getting honest products to double triple and more is just plain silly.

Now if a business made their entire profit from corrupting our food, then yes they could be in trouble soon. Having seen the tepid response from food companies (we are going to stop adding it to our ground beef(but no mention of packaged foods:: We do not use the one made with ammonia(we use another source that has the same junk meat and have no plans to stop) are typical response.

The fact it ever found its way into ground beef is ridiculous.

Now presuming the same limits apply to the pork products (lean finely textured pork vs beef) Ground pork can contain at most 20% of the stuff. Which would mean hamburger should go up no more than 15-20% due to the lack of this filler.

I would expect to see "cold-cuts" of commercial grade to be offered at sale prices instead.

I certainly eat less meat than I used to.. which is partially how I was caught unaware.. if someone wanted to add some beans to a commercial taco I had no objection.. whether soy beans, pinto beans or anything else like that, I was just fine with it.

Indeed, other parts do have uses. Bones and the little meat on them can make a fine beef stock or broth, cold cuts from other parts. if someone really wants a blood pudding then.. umm okay. But combining these things from thousands of cattle to go into food source for tens or hundreds of thousand or more people is a recipe for disaster.

That disturbs me far more than an expensive burger ever could.

Simply put, ground beef should be chunks of meat put in a grinder(where the term "ground" comes from). The fat should be no more than the fat that was on the cut of meat.

Anything else remains fraud, legal or not.

I left Michigan many years ago. The state had truth in labeling for food products, especially meat. So when you read on the hot dogs... Pork by products, beef by products and mechanically separated chicken you had a pretty good idea that it wasn't good for you. In Texas you read the hotdog label and it says ... BEEF, PORK, Chicken. You have to wonder how Texas allows food products to get by with these incredibly low standards.

I guess because you don't eat much red meat you didn't see the change in the labels at the supermarkets a couple decades ago from "ground round" to "ground beef". Alarm bells should have rung.

Alarm bells should also have rung when the government, god bless their cradle to grave coddling, ordered fat to be removed from many products. How can you remove fat from the middle of a slice of round? You can only trim so much around the edge. But you can add filler that has had the fat removed and lower the total fat.

Lets have the government get rid of salt and now sugar too! How about a "mandate" that everyone be vegan? Add that to Obamacare! :)

I remember ground round, ground chuck, and ground beef all being sold side by side.

Ground round was round steak, ground. Ground chuck was chuck roast, ground.
Ground beef was whatever CUT of meat that was not selling, it could include rump roast,flank, and yes chunks of fat to even it out.

Hmm I wonder, since BPI is claiming "beef is beef", could I go into their facility with 20 lbs of their "beef" and walk out with 10 lbs of filet mignon? After all.. according to them "beef is beef".

The USDA seems to agree. However traditionally such parts are known as "beef byproduct".

Why not introduce a law that says all these animal by products may only be used for pet food, not human consumption?

A. They still sell the stuff and make a profit
B. We don't have to eat it.

Provided of course it can be shown that pets health won't be at risk.



Laying down beside my chair is Stella, she is a 8 yr old German Shepherd.

She has got a healthy but fussy appetite, some types of dog food she will not eat, some types of our food she will not eat either.

The funny thing is most of the food that is fit for human consumption that she won't eat has been mentioned in this thread, mainly the cheaper end reprocessed meat products - burgers, sausages etc.

One quick sniff and she can detect pink slime or the pork equivalent.

It does make me think when I get the "you don't expect me to eat that"[1] routine out of her when I offer her a titbit off my plate, what have I been eating?


[1] One sniff, turn around, walk to other side of room and lay down with back towards me.

Don't forget though that it is all a vicious circle. If the public get educated enough not to buy animal by-products, then there won't be a market for them except for pet food, or slops for farm animals. The result will probably be an increase in basic meat prices to maintain profit margins.





Listing it as an ingredient on everything that contains it (yep.. the canned goods too) would not be expensive. Until the loss of sales kicked in.

Go ahead.. sell "Ground beef with 15% LFTB" next to "Ground Beef". Let the consumer decide.

In the mean time.. I am trying to adjust my diet to accomodate the realities..
The commercial food chain is not fit for human consumption.

That is why they do not put it on the labels. Good Sheeple have no need to know.

When I did a google search for "Lean Finely Textured Pork", I got a total of 1 match, since it is not what everyone is talking about. That was the USDA site.

A French feed company was in the news in a similar way not too long ago... They 'discovered' that human sewerage had a good level of protein that could be taken advantage of, and that using the French discovery of Pasteurization meant that all regulations were met.

Strange that they were put out of business when a newspaper reported the practice?...


All is fair in business?

At least it is a little more difficult to abuse or poison vegetables...

just went to the butcher shop today. They had what I presume was unprocessed trimmings, labeled "pet food", for $1.20/lb. A much better use than in my ground beef.

human waste can be a very good source of methynol. I have seen where many countries are adapting their septic tanks to power the homes. The residue apparently makes an excellent fertilizer.

And we do not have to eat it.

This is much ado over nothing....other than somebody attaching a less than favorable tag line to what most of us have been eating..healthfully..for many years.

Yup. The wheat, the whole wheat, and nothing but the wheat.

Same for beef.....the cow, the whole cow, and nothing but the cow.

Get freaking real.....if you witnessed the reality of what goes on in most of the food chain in this or any other advanced country, you would starve yourselves to death. Whilst I live high on the hog.....oh, maybe pig anus would entice you to eat pork. Ever wonder what's in BACON???

Unless you can grow enough organic in your own backyard to feed yourself and whatever offspring you have, best to shut up and thank yourself that you are not in some 3rd world country that cannot feed it's own people.

And as my grandmother used to say......EAT. She came from old world Germany, where they learned not to waste anything. And she made great cow anus and dumplings, my friends.

I have found local sources of grass fed, hormone/gmo free beef. I can tell it is real beef because I can pick it up and look at it. I can tell no waste products go into the ground because I can grind it myself. I can do the same with pork, grinding up pieces of meat.

Now if you prefer the government telling you "shut up and eat it" instead of your grandparents, that is fine. But labeling it so they do not SNEAK it into the rest of us is the least they can do. Go ahead, and lick the slaughter house floor clean. But the cats could really use the rest.

Edit: I am not opposed to eatting pork. Some nice pork roasts will fit in the grinder just fine as well. I can also cook an excellent pork roast, pork chops, I can cure my own bacon..

It may cost me a bit more, and I may have smaller portions. But I can fill that in with beans, rice, (still looking for a good source of cheeses)... and I
am far from starving.

2 ny steaks+ some taters and veggies = stew for a week and a half.

And not a bit of slime.

I suppose you it would ease your mind and stomach 'knowing what's really in it'.....
