Below the radar still (so far) "Ground pork may be derived from boneless meat which has been previously frozen and stockpiled. The purchaser may specify the maximum amount of previously frozen boneless meat that can be mixed with fresh chilled meat prior to final grinding. When specified by the purchaser, “lean finely textured pork†may be combined with boneless pork meeting the above material requirements provided it does not exceed 20 percent by weight of the combined finished product. “Lean finely textured pork†shall be produced and labeled in accordance with FSIS regulations." 3 out of 4 factories shut down is a good start. 4 permanent would be real progress. Yes, Please Shut Down All The Factories. Then We Can Blame OBlahBlameBlahBlameBlahBlame aka Potus The Pitiful. Of course, if they are American Factories, Mr. Flexibility will still Get The Votes. Be'n those kinds of jobs are Low Wage, Little Benefits and The "Laid Off" Workers will want/get Extended Unemployment Bennies. And The Only Way to get them is with The Change Agent. Bad Thang Be'n, with No More Slime, these Under Middle Classers with No Jobs cannot afford The Now More Expensive "Real Meat" and will have to buy SpamM, potted meat, and other assorted "meats" to get their Meat Fix. They could always just sell it under their new trade name "Pink Slime". Or the pork equivalent "Porky Slime" Seriously if it is just fine and dandy there should be no problem labeling it. You can call it a lot of things but it is not "Ground Beef" or "Ground Pork". Freedom from regulation in action. Burn down the house then blame the consumers for not being good sheeple. Janice |

Seriously if it is just fine and dandy there should be no problem labeling it. You can call it a lot of things but it is not "Ground Beef" or "Ground Pork". You have been eating it since about 1990, so I would say two decades and no one getting sick might just say it is fine and dandy. Do you drink rBST milk or eat rBST meat? (Recombinant bovine growth hormone) BTW you didn't point out chicken slime, turkey slime, lamb slime etc. The deeper you dig the more likely you will become vegan. |

This discussion is really just another bit of political correctness. This stuff has been in hot dogs and balogna and much of what you folks eat every day for more years than you know, and has never hurt anybody. Hell, eat a can of kitty food, guarantee it won't hurt you one bit. You really think the meat processors have thrown this stuff out for all these years? Just what do you think goes into some of the German sausage delicacies? Folks in the old country did not discard one bit of consumable meat. I seem to recall a bit of fluff about 'mechanically deboned chicken' some years ago. 'Mangle meat' is here to stay. Get real. The stuff, although the reality of what it is might make you queasy, is probably better for you, and safer because of the puffing to kill the nasties, than you will admit to. As much as I try to avoid such things, yeah I have probably consumed most of them.. As far as no one getting sick? There are many maladies that may be attributable to them. And honestly if by combining all these things from such a large number of animals, they have created a perfect avenue to spread a virus, poison, or other problems. American obesity can not all be attributed to excessive appetites and fast food. BGH may well be a factor. Most of the USA stopped eatting Bologna and Hot dogs because we found out they were not good for us. Guess what? Those same scraps just got fed back to us in a place where there was solid reason to believe they would not be. As far as poultry goes, I do try to get whole pieces. It can still be GMO, overloaded with hormones, and many other problems. These all need addressed. Oh and remember our old favorite "mad cow"? Slime is such a great way to make sure EVERYONE could get it!! Bon Appetite!! Janice |

This discussion is really just another bit of political correctness. I am saying when you are buying "ground beef" you should be getting GROUND beef. Not purina, not Bologna, not hot dogs. Let me try to put it in terms Mark can understand.. If you bought a muscle car.. found it a bit underpowered.. opened the hood and found a fiat engine, wouldn't you be a bit ticked?!? Oh those leather seats? pure naugahyde baby. Same thing. In fact in some ways superior.. so you have no right to complain. Bait and switch. It is a con, if you or I did it we would be locked up. Not given a multi-million dollar position on a board of directors. Janice |

This discussion is really just another bit of political correctness. I do agree with you. If one is buying 'ground beef' it should be what one expects, no less. My point was that there is nothing at all wrong with 'pink slime'. But you are correct, the buyer should be aware if it has been added to the pound of ground cow they are purchasing.... It is not available directly to the consumer. If you wanna buy a chunk of frozen waste and cook it up, have at it. I just want to be ABLE to avoid it. There is no free market in a crooked market. And this is a crooked market. USDA is supposed to be looking out for consumers, not slaughter houses. Epic failure. Janice |

halal is much like kosher.. tighter standards than the government might apply. kosher meat can not contain pink slime, nor meat past the 12th rib of the cow. I am uncertain of Halal standards, but it should not be distasteful. Janice |

Chris, I have to agree with soft^spirit on this one. Halal (and Kosher which is pretty much the same thing) from a Western point of view is just ordinary meat. There are no secret additives and the hygiene regulations both are required to meet are the same as for "normal" meat. For your own reasons you may choose not to eat it, but it's not going to hurt you if you do and if you do eat it, it won't taste the slightest bit different. Edit: In some ways it might even be better for you as it doesn't contain as many of the factory supplied "additives" that are present in a lot of supermarket food. T.A. |

A slightly off topic question, but can someone please tell me if the rules of Halal and Kosher are close enough, that disregarding the politics involved, a Jew can comfortably eat Halal and a Muslim eat Kosher ? Just something I've been wondering. T.A. |

If you want fresh ground sirloin, buy fresh ground sirloin. If you want fresh ground round, buy fresh ground round. If you buy ground beef, you get cow anus and any other part of a "BEEF" BTW, disinfecting it is likely better than Jose and Jesus at your market not cleaning the grinder because they didn't understand the instructions in English on how to clean it. Remember the e. coli. Yes, not saying it contains a processed product isn't Kosher, then again the USDA regulations are laws and ignorance of the law is not an excuse. |

Just an FYI most industrial sized Meat processing plants employ a large number of Hispanic(illegals) in the factory. This is less likely to happen at your local Food store. Though your local stores generally have moved over to buying meat or processing it in a central location and sending the meat out prepackaged In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. A really strict Muslim or Hebrew is going to have difficulties. It is not so much how it is made but The Kosher is supposed to be blessed and overseen by a Rabbi. The rules, are quite involved and I would have to say go to wikipedia for an overview, and the religious texts for a definative answer. Me? I will pass knowing they taste fine. Janice |
