Hi folks, Big things are afoot! I spent the morning today assembling all of the parts for the new Astropulse/NTPCKR and Download servers. Thank you to all the generous donors who made this purchase possible! Check out the photos here! The machines will be shipping out tomorrow and should arrive at the S@H offices in a few days. You can check their progress and tracking info on this page. Don't expect immediate changes to the project though; it will take some time for the S@H staff to install everything, get the software configured, do some stability testing and finally migrate everything over. Keep your eyes open for updates as things progress. And finally, I would like to offer a special "Thank You" to Graham Middleton whose more-than-generous donations made the purchase of these machines possible in a far shorter time frame than we anticipated. These servers are dedicated to the memory of his parents - may they rest in peace! -=Delty GPUUG Webmaster webmaster@gpuug.org ![]() |

I don't know what to say, Thank you so much Phil for your time building them and to everyone for letting me name them. I am rather emotional at the moment. Happy Crunching, Graham ![]() |

Hi folks, Spectacular stuff. One of those really has 9 DIMM slots per CPU? (As opposed to a binary multiple?) Any special reason for the physical arrangement of the populated DIMMs? And my own preference for cooling fans is for them to be used in push-pull combinations so as not to force too high a pressure differential rather than to have them bunched together as a 'double boost' fan... That lot must sure as hell be noisy! Good stuff but commiserations for the human loss. Hopefully they will be well remembered. One of those really has 9 DIMM slots per CPU? (As opposed to a binary multiple?) It does look kind of odd, but the 5500/5600 series Xeon processors require a minimum of three DIMMs per CPU, so you can have four but not two. One machine has 9 slots per CPU with 96GB installed (6x16GB) and the other has 12 slots per CPU with 128GB installed (8x16GB.) The Intel machine has an insane number of fans in it, and it's incredibly loud. I was staggered by the sound and how much air moved through it so I hope no one has a desk anywhere near it at the installation location. I should have taken a recording of it it's that crazy! -=Delty GPUUG Webmaster webmaster@gpuug.org ![]() |

One of those really has 9 DIMM slots per CPU? (As opposed to a binary multiple?) Normally I will see 6, 8, or 12 per CPU for a dual Xeon board. 9 makes sense, but it is just kind of rare I think. Luckily the guys have a closet where their racks live. However I bet that closet can be heard form a great distance as it is. Maybe this one will make that area a required hearing protection zone. lol I was playing around with some new, to me, servers at work recently. Since I was just starting to populate a new rack without much weight to it. I did have a concern that the volume of air being pushed through the machines would cause the rack to start rolling. One of those really has 9 DIMM slots per CPU? (As opposed to a binary multiple?) Tripple channel perhaps? ![]() |

One of those really has 9 DIMM slots per CPU? (As opposed to a binary multiple?) Aparently I need to go back to remedial counting. The Intel system has 6 slots per CPU and can take up to 96GB. The Supermicro has 9 per and can take up to 288GB. I was just doing some reading on the 5520 chipset and they are indeed triple channel, but they allow two DIMMS per channel with no decrease in performance. -=Delty GPUUG Webmaster webmaster@gpuug.org ![]() |

Tracking numbers are up, both servers should be picked up by UPS today and at SETI by end of next week. You can view the tracking numbers by visiting http://gpuug.org/purchases ![]() Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

WTG ... and again thanks so much Slavac for all your hard work, Thanks for the kind words. Phil took a personal day to go put together the servers which saved us quite a bit of money. Servers should be delivered next week Thursday. ![]() Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |
