Received a request to post this here.... Milkyway went down due to RPI shutting down the A/C once again yesterday. The MW staff were totally taken by surprise and are filing formal complaints w/ RPI over this. We're hoping to be back up shortly. Blurf MW Forum Mod/Project Admin |

Thanks for the update. I hope when they shut you down they allowed you time to do an orderly shutdown. I hope they did not just turn the power off on you folks. |

Thanks Blurf, you do a great job. I hope I speak for many when I say that it is appreciated. Plus SETI Classic = 21,082 WUs |

What makes this ironic is that Wed. & Thur. (2oth. and 21st.) were double wu credit days given for MW being down for a period of time earlier in the month. Gonk! |

so are we going to get double credit here at Seti when the project is down? (i doubt it) |

so are we going to get double credit here at Seti when the project is down? It's also not as necessary* here as on Milkyway, because we are allowed to cache WUs for as many days as we want (or as many as BOINC allows). On Milkyway you can have max. 12 WUs (per GPU?), even my pretty old HD3850 cruches them within 1.5-3.0 hours (actually little less than that), depending on if that are the short or long ones, the usual mix lasts for about 2 hours. With new graphics cards you have basically no cache at all. *) I actually don't think it's "necessary" on Milkyway too, it's up to the users to have backup projects, everybody knows the limit of tasks in progress and the fact, that BOINC projects have not the most reliable servers on this planet, but the admins obviously like to be nice to us. |

"but the admins obviously like to be nice to us." yeah there are other high credit projects out there like Prime grid and Gpugrid... if they are overly generous with credits, it's for a reason. unlike Seti, in that the users really believe in the project. years ago Seti would be off weeks and months at the time... we were expected to understand it...and we did. milkyway is off for a few days, maybe a week and they have to "be nice" to their crunchers? double credits? where is the loyalty to the project? is it all about credits over at milkyway? then there is the whole "pay for double credits" debacle. |

milkyway is off for a few days, maybe a week and they have to Well, I don't understand that either, everybody knows how MW works and there should be no need for any doubble credit days, actually compared with the "Panic Mode" threads here, there was pretty little complains over there... or I didn't find them. So I really don't know why they did this... BTW, for those who are interested, it's back online, although not everything is running yet. EDIT: now I found the real reason, they had to dump all results from database when they had server problems, see here. Although I still can't imagine how someone can loose 2 days worth of work with just 12 tasks per GPU in cache... nevermind. |

They really that scared of losing crunchers? Haven't they ever heard of Team's POTM's? Or the really big teams with their challenges? Not enough for them? Have to resort to bribery & any mention of that end up modding those that really want to crunch the project? tut,tut,tut....doesn't really say much for the project or its staff then does it? |

They really that scared of losing crunchers? I don't think any Boinc project has such faithful followers as Seti does. Most of us have kept the faith even through long periods of intermittent operation and downtime. And donated many thousands of dollars to help them buy new servers and such. Now that is quite true Mark, however, don't forget WCG. The really good projects will always have their faithful. |

I don't think that anyone is really bashing MW. Just highlighting the point that what they did was outside the "fair" boundaries of Boinc. Should they themselves see this as MW Bashing, then that again tells one a lot about the project. |

Well, you nailed it right there, Chris. Henceforth the argument that they should not have to meddle with the credits to maintain the following of their 'faithful'. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Just highlighting the point that what they did was outside the "fair" boundaries of Boinc. oh it will be seen as bashing for sure. when desperate means are used, desperate people are about. it seems to fall at the feet of inadequate funding of the project. they may have some dedicated crunchers, but they may not have dedicated donors. or something is terribly wrong with their fundraising strategy..aka "pay for double credits" |

Just highlighting the point that what they did was outside the "fair" boundaries of Boinc. So what about the projects that give credit for whole batches of tasks gone wrong, that erred on everyone's computers? Seti's done that as well in the past, many other projects as well. This --the double credits for the projects having been down for days-- is as far as I see it a similar thing. I'm not saying that the double credits for every $500.- donated is a good thing, that falls in the same category as the other we-pay-you-/you-pay-us-for-crunching-at-our-project projects, including the one where you had to buy the puzzle to be able to crunch work... |

The Double Credit Fundraiser is a dead issue...not happening and Dr. Newberg already posted an apology for that. The reason for the other double credit days was to pay people back for when we had a database crash and some significant credit was lost by users in the Spring. Nothing unfair or inappropriate there. Anyways we are back up and I've asked this thread to be locked. |
