Yep, looks like the cricket graph took a nosedive. Nothing showing on the server status page yet but it looks like trouble.

Looks like you last contacted last night at 23:40 UTC last night. Been a lot of heavy hitting on the servers today, could have something to do with it.

I would have thought that Matt and the rest of the project staff KNEW they were sending out nothing but shorties. Guess not!

Of course we know shorties are a major problem, but some other numbers just aren't adding up...

Which numbers?
On an average Work Unit, my GTX460 does 1 Work Unit every 11 minutes or so & with the shorties, it's knocking out 1 every 3 minutes. The CPU usually does 1 every 15 minutes, with the shorties it's doing 1 every 4 minutes.
So instead of doing almost 10 per hour, my system alone ends up doing 35 per hour.

That's a big jump in load.

Very far off topic. And the plural of virus is viruses. And Windows is spelled with a "ows" much like Linux isn't spelled with an "s" as in Linsux. And I don't think that people are pissed off with Windows because its not free. People don't write viruses for Linux because its not worth the small user base to put the amount of effort into breaking it.

The plural of virus is virii, like the plural of forum is fora. This at least in Latin, the language used also by Isaac Newton.

Is there a difference between the computer and the biological spellings?

Like a theatre program is a programme, but a computer programme is a program?

I think, the plural of virus is viri, but with a long 'i', as opposed to the genitive/plural of 'vir'. ;-)

PS: And yes, I did learn latin in school, but that's been about forty years ago.

You're right. I was dubious about the second 'i'. My Latin is sixty years old, but I still remember something:
Eheu fugaces Postume Postume labuntur anni
Nec pietas moram rugis et instanti senectae
Afferet indomitaeque morti.

When talking about computer viruses, according to Wikipedia, the word is not used in its Latin form. I understand that Wikipedia not always the best source, but nearly everywhere else I can find states that the plural of virus is not viri or virii, but viruses when referring to the computer program.

Common North American usage has the Latin plural used for original (usually biological) usage, and modern "add an s" for non-original usage. For example, a bug has two antennae, but an airplane would have two antennas.

So a sick person could have two virii (or viri), a sick computer could have two viruses. Either case would suck.

[snip]
But of course not! They're running *nix which eradicated viruses long ago, when the Earth was still cooling.

*nix is not immune to virii, but few people write viruses for *nix as the damage would be limited - and not as many people are P----d off at Linix or Unix due to them being almost free of cost, as opposed to M$ Windoze... but we're getting off topic...

OK, so I was off by an "I" with "Virii"... but the "Windoze" was done deliberately, for effect...

The part in bold was my point!

Yes, I know why people purposefully misspell Windows. I think its childish personally. Which is why I threw in Linsux, in an attempt to show how childish it is.

People don't write viruses for linux because it actually takes skill, labor,
and work. People write viruses for windows because it's easy and has a larger
impact, either because the inherent vulnerabilities in the OS (read crap
programming) or the patches not being applied by the average user.

Anyone ever looked into stats of servers being hacked and how many are
MS vs Linux?

Might be interesting...might get MS goons on your doorstep too...

Most of the world supercomputers run Linux. Look at the top500 list. It should be updated soon in Hamburg.

Why are we carrying Matt's request for help so far off topic?

I'll admit I made an off-color comment as a joke, but do we really need to carry our OS wars into Matt's thread? Mark Sattler suggested that it was a virus and I was, in my own funny way (and as in inside joke between ML1 and I), trying to say that it was unlikely.

I'm fully aware that MS OSes are hacked more than any other OS, and I'm fully aware that it is due to poor programing, to put it nicely. Though I don't know why MS's "goons" would come after me for this knowledge.

Most virus writers write viruses for Windows because most people use Windows.

Viruses go to where the money is. Just like any other criminal activity. Some people out there might write viruses in a petty vendetta against Microsoft, but most of them write viruses to make money. Good viruses written by ventetta writers are reverse engineered by money-interested writers, and turned into moneymakers.

Now that the Apple OS is on more than 15% of computers, the virus writers are starting to write for them too. As recent news will prove.

If I'm not mistaken, *ix/*ux is close to Apple OSes in a lot of ways, so if you are on *ix/*ux/OSx it might be good to stop being complacent and start thinking security.

Since when, Last I read it was based on Darwin Linux...been a couple of years.
But when I quit using one it was based on Darwin 5 IIRC

Darwin is based of BSD+ Mach Kernel. Darwin is not Linux but is a *nix. The Unix(R) is a marketing term given out to *nix that pass a specific set of test administered by a testing body with the rights to the name Unix. Supposedly it costs around $100,000 dollars and meeting the specs/tests to be able to call yourself a Unix(R). OSX server has been a Unix (R) since 10.5 and all versions I believe since 10.6.

Not just you(mine aren't going either).....just checked, and the upload server has been labeled as "Disabled". SETI@Home is in the midst of the weekly backup/outage schedule, so I wouldn't be surprised if nothing goes back until sometime Friday.
