I have a technical question for our resident Crazy Raccoon Lady.

Do raccoons ever play with toys like a dog or cat would?

I ask this because a week or so ago, while doing some weed trimming, I came across a tennis ball that once belonged to the late, great Sammi the Super Spaniel. So as not to hit it with the mower, I tossed it up on the deck and forgot about it. The other morning the tennis ball was laying conspicuously in the middle of the deck. I figured the wind from storms likely blew it around. But now this morning, the tennis ball was found floating in one of the water dishes I keep out there for the nocturnal critters that happen by. The ball doesn't appear to be chewed up or otherwise mangled, just neatly placed in the water dish.

If you think I should, I'll put a net and a couple rackets out there for their future enjoyment.

Baby raccoons will play with toys, but they are pretty careless with them. Eric has put cat toys will bells in them out for various litters of raccoons in the past. The babies play with the toys for a few nights, then promptly lose them under the deck or who knows where. If the ball has sentimental value, I would substitute something else for your baby raccoons' amusement. I have never observed an adult raccoon play. And in case you are wondering baby raccoons, like cats, will chase the "red bug" that comes from a laser pointer! That is pretty fun to do!

Thanks for asking!

The Fryja cat can’t get enough of the “Red bug”.

So will people. At least until they became common. Much fun from the third floor of the physics building above the quad after dark back in the late 70's.

Thank you, oh wise CRL! I positioned the tennis ball over in one corner tonight and will see where it ends up in the morning.

Better yet, Mr. Crow, put a toy that makes noise outside. When you hear the noise, quietly go to the window and see who is playing with the toy.

If you feed them, they will come...

There was a nut case a month or two ago who was using his laser by pointing it at air craft. They caught him, but I did not hear what they did to him yet.

Not only an idiot, but a dangerous idiot.

However this comment made me giggle,

This guy is two generations removed from celebrity and we are supposed to be interested in his troubles with the law?? Frankly, my dears, we don´t give a damn.

idiot.

Since I wasn't there, His story could be true, but then again I wasn't there, so what do I know? Not much, as it depends on how far away He was and where He was, etc, etc...

Not everyone uses their head to think of what the consequences might be.

The aviation authorities take a very dim view of folks pointing lasers at aircraft, and not without cause. Think of the potential casualties if even a light aircraft ploughed into a school because the pilot was distracted, or blinded, by some fool on the ground. It just doesn't bear thinking about.

If his story is true, he is criminally idiotic. If not, it is just criminal.

Not much of a defense.
