As Bill appointed me the one with the good guess, I will start another.

Mine is to guess the slowest broadband download speed I have screen printed during the last 2 weeks.

To help -

I use ADSLMax (line rate adapting up to 8 MB/s) over the telephone, and my telephone is 8 km *5 miles) from the exchange (the way the wires go).

The line length will give the ADSL signal time to be reduced, and my router statistics (taken from the router browser window) shows -

Synchronisation speed - down stream 1,364 kb/s and the upload stream is 448 kb/s.

When downloading files I do not get the expected rates, and I have been getting these rates from an official ISP/BT broadband speed measuring site.

So now to the contest -

What is the slowest download speed the test site gave me?

I will provide a screen shot as proof of my actual speed for the purposes of this contest should it be needed.

OK, lets set a lower limit. I predict:

0.01 mb/sec

Lower than John McL's second guess and higher than Bill's first guess.

The figures I am using are based on the 40 screen shots over 2 weeks I got from www.speedtester.bt.com and not on the global tester www.speedtest.net

Higher than Chris's guess but lower than John McL's

I don't think it will be long before a willing guess is declared, and we can all then start a new competition (in this thread) and revert to playing whiff-waff (remember Boris at the Beijing Olympics acceptance?).

Now within spitting distance of my worst recorded download speed. But ...

A guess that is highter than Magenta stated, and, yes, I am afraid lower thanJohn McL's suggestion below.

Nearly there John N ...

I am currently downloading a 59.3MB GPU driver file for my old HD3850 in an AGP slot. I have been going for 2 hours so far and it is 48% done, with only another 1 hour 28 minute needed to complete.

My broadband with Demon is currently a complete waste of time, and all the files I sent for them to sort out why I am so slow they claim not to open or it's in the wrong format (was WinZipped).

Useless shower, and they just changed the Bombay Technical Help Desk from 24 hour to 8.00am to 8.00pm.

Looks like I may be moving ISPs after 16 years if this is not sorted soon.

18.07 kb/s
I would switch to smoke signals if my down loads were this slow.

16Kb/S? You do realize that dialup is faster?

As posted earlier - John N is nearly there with 24kb/s. So I will declare him the winner.

If anyone wants to see proof of my slow downloads, then earlier Speedtest.net results have been posted. The slowest I did post, but not for this guessing game, was ping = 768ms; download = 0.05Mb/s and upload = 0.35Mb/s.

Congratulations to John Neale for his good guess.

Uli has asked me to remind the winner that the next guessing competition, for whatever chosen subject, should be continued after this declared winner. I will send John N a PM to let him know of his win and to continue the process.

Uli also asked me to post that the competition should change to a new thread some time soon after reaching the 300th post (subject to the guessing competition running at that time).

Over to you John Neale.

Thank you, John Clark, and may your ISP woes soon be a thing of the past!

I will put my thinking cap on and devise a new competition shortly.

This contest should attest to the fact that I'm starting to run short of ideas for contests! Anyway, it should be fun, as it requires absolutely no intellectual effort, and everyone can play ...

This past Sunday, my running club held a road race. Well, three road races in one, really - a half marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km run, and a 10 km walk.

We don't have the official numbers yet, but the timekeeper has sent us an estimate of the total number of finishers.

The question is: how many people are estimated to have finished the race?

Here is a clue. In the past few years, the total number of finishers have been as follows:

2006: 1,804
2007: 1,790
2008: 2,340
2009: 1,078
2010: 1,750
2011: ????
