I can grow tired and old successfully. Not so much luck with plants.

I grow my plants in 5 gallon buckets. I use new soil each year and I wash and sterilize them with water and clorox. I think it has to do with weather. had a lot of cool nights then had hot weather and still cool nights. I believe tomatos like warm humid nights.

I grew my tommies in the same pots last year and the amount of tomatoes was lovely. This year so far zilch, just flowers, still it's been weird, plenty of sun and warm weather and yet the flowering plants like my roses and Star of Bethlehem have gone nuts, but the fruit and veg so far have produced nothing.

Except for the spuds. Nom.

It seems like it has been strange everywhere. We are waiting with bated breath over what sort of winter we are going to get this year. A cold one is always better than a snowy one for us.

I once grew beef steak tomatoes, in San Gabriel CA, the nights were always warm in the back yard, of course the garden was located next to a hedge and in front of the garage(the Garage is/was always separate from the house). Have Ya thought about covering them under clear plastic, I used a wire trellis of course.

When we are at risk of frost, Long Sufferin' Marie puts a clear plastic sheet over the tomatoes. Most years we can expect frost any time after September 1st.

I guess I will be the owner of miniture Lemon Tree. A neighbor offered it me first, but really didn't have a good spot for it. I offered it another neighbor and he agree to take it and adopt it. Poor thing looked very starved for water.
Anyhoo, today we talk and he want's to give it away to another neighbor, because he thinks, it might produce more than he can use.

It is coming back to me and I need to get a spot ready asap, that I wanted to turn into a garden next year.

Oh Ang, I didn't see any thorns on that Lemon Tree.

Sounds good, let us know how it all works out. My Sweet Mother had a lemon tree that grew in the front room in her home in Nova Scotia for years, and in some years it would grow one or more good sized lemons. I was away for most of those years so I never had a chance to test what they tasted like. (I know lemons.)

Lemon trees have a lovely scent. I grew up with two orange trees and one lemon tree in the front yard. What I did learn years later is that when oranges turn orange, that does not mean they are ready to eat.. it takes a long time on the tree to build up any sugar content. I think our lemons were sweeter.

Today I feel the gardening blood lust come upon me. It roots, it quickens, it courses through my veins driving all other thoughts from my head. I dream of death. I take no prisoners; I show no mercy. I plunge my pruning hand into tangles of black widow webs, daring the spiders to bite me. I scream triumphant as they scurry for cover. Crabgrass, quack grass, bermuda grass... all shall feel my icy fingers entwine their necks. The mallow, the bindweed, the spotted spurge... all tremble as I bend and pull. The burclover, the Himalayan blackberry, the nettleleaf goosefoot... they think they are safe from my murderous rampage. Insufferable fools! Their spines and thorns do not deter me. I don a glove and take their lives.

I have good news anyhow, my tomatoes have started to fruit. I know what your thinking, September? To add to that I'm about one quarter through the strawberries that are currently growing, each of which so far are delicious, aside from the ones stolen by others :). The last crop of spuds were a complete failure, but on the upside the onions continue to do well (still a few left to pick).

Today the last of the peas were taken in, the sun flowers are finely coming in to bloom. These sun flowers are the tallest we ever have grown, over six feet. They are nowhere near the record, but for us a wonderful surprise. The tomatoes are still ripening, we get three or four every day, with over two dozen green and soon to be harvested. We feel that we should wait a week or two before we take in the potatoes.
The main idea here is gathered, harvested, taken in, no murder, no evil grins, or ripping or cutting and slashing. We like to think of our garden as a common quest, and team effort between our friends the vegetables and our selves. Besides the peas and tomatoes can only scream so loud, the ones in the garden don’t seem to know what awaits them when they are in our clutches here in the house.
Bahuhahaha!

Long Sufferin’ Marie and I thought all the peas and beans were gone but we took that part of the garden apart and found enough green to add to our supper. Sorry no pics, we ate it all. We also got zucchini and a great whack of tomatoes.

Good news, we got the last of the zucchini out of the garden yesterday, and we were able to cover the tomatoes, so last night’s frost killed nothing.
