Maybe having the TV and game console is her way to keep er kids home and out of trouble (Bad crowds, drugs, etc).

Why is everyone here assuming the TV is paid for? Jose's house of super screens may have had one of those take it home and don't pay for two year deals.

Another interesting point (thought I pretty sure nothing in Blurf's post indicated, one way or the other, whether the TTV is paid for).

I don't care if the TV is paid for or not....that wasn't my point at all.

Just picked your post as a clear example of why everyone's rush to judgement thinking was wrong.

It is far from a clear example of what you suggest, and your point about rushing to judgment is precisely the point a handful of us are trying to make.

Ah cool....I've seen true abuse and fraud of federal/local aid and then valid cases where I feel they should've received aid and were denied.

Message 1061184 - Posted: 30 Dec 2010, 3:08:35 UTC - in response to Message 1058936.

Are we all TV victims?
Is this the New Religion?
Are we all trained/hypnotised to only swallow The Soundbite?
I know I'm in a very small minority that do not have a TV, and I'm hounded and presumed guilty in the disbelief that there is life without TV... (Yes, I've had the multiple Visits...)
Is TV soon to be worshipped as a 'right'?
"Forced"?...
Perhaps we all should go back to church...

I still maintain that this was a non-sequitur.
Martin, based on your other threads, you are very very welll informed about world events. Add to that the fact that, in order to read and post in these fora, you obviously have a computer. (I think that's a non sequitur, too, but I'm building on it.)
Now, where are people to get information about local, national and world events?
One could read a newspaper. How much are newspaper subscriptions, per year, these days? Let's say each daily paper is 50 cents and we'll pretend the Sunday paper is the same price. Then For the year, that'd be $182.00. As I said, I was able to purchase an HDTV for less than that.
One could listen to radio. I suppose that's the cheapest approach to getting information, let alone entertainment.
Even though netbooks and notebooks are extremely low in price, I'd hazard a guess that a decent one is still going to cost more than a good but low end HDTV. (My current notebook cost $350.)
Many many possibilities have been presented for how it is the woman came to possess the HDTV, why she may choose to continue to possess it and so on. Or, there indeed the possibility that it is some sort of "stunt."
Martin, it is your choice that you do not own a TV and that you (clearly) get your (large amounts of) information from your computer and internet connection. I also wonder if you get any entertainment from it? Watch any new clips or music videos online?
However, if this woman does not already own a computer, it seems unlikely that she's going to be able to go get one right now. Thus, if it is her choice, added to by current constraints, to own a TV as her method of obtaining info and entertainment, it is what it is. And, given what it is, then, yes,she and most of the rest of us are stuck with two options: buy an HDTV or get a converter box. Those of us in the USA were told repeatedly if we did not, soon we would find most of our channels (including news and weather channels) showing up as blank ... because they would be broadcasting at different frequencies, to free up the previously used frequencies for things like emergency medical services and so on.

I find it odd that you call most or all posts "a rush to judgment," when clearly a wide variety of posts suggested alternative possibilities, attempting to guess and enter into what the woman's situation might be. Indeed, it is quite the opposite of rushing to judgment, and Blurf's post was a stellar and succinct example of not rushing to judgment.

Perhaps.

Sarge,

Good comment and good thoughts.

Now follow through with a few further thoughts and connections...

Even if this aspect of the discussion is "non-sequitur", it does make this thread much more 'interesting' to expose what people believe and do and how they are influenced.

In one respect, some consider a TV an 'essential'. Others are horrified that the TV is there and is being shown off as a 'luxury'. I long ago gave up TV as being painfully biased and pathetically patronising to the viewers. (There are of course some good programs, but at what level are they aimed?)

What do we do with our time?

And what is the 'real story'?... You can't say much in a Soundbite.

Clearly, one can hear a soundbite or watching an interesting program and then learn more looking on the internet or going to a local library.

you notice no police involvement... this type of housing project is being phased out for the very reason that was recorded. people with nothing better to do than fight over apparently nothing.

I've seen and experienced this type of behavior before. Lots of poor choices being made which affect everyone in the immediate vicinity. Some realizing this and doing the only thing they know how to try to resolve it. The weaker come out to confront the stronger who are affecting their lives in a negative way. Those making poor choices respond in the only way they know how. The cycle repeats itself over and over. And the majority standing around have another reoccurring opportunity to watch and laugh, not realizing the self deprecating behavior that's happening around them.

Such ignorance. This is what's wrong with America. We allow this kind of behavior to occur and call it civil rights. In the name of political correctness, we encourage this kind of behavior by subsidizing it. If police showed up, they'd ask who wants to file charges for assault and battery. Some would know what that means, but none would stand up and be able to articulate something that the police officer could write down in his report. Truth is, both sides of these disputes are at fault and when the police officer starts asking questions, both sides start to realize this, the story changes as the questions are being asked and in the end, the convoluted report doesn't get written.

The police probably don't want to go into that neighborhood. It's probably known as the <insert geographically modified epithet here> neighborhood. They probably get at least one domestic disturbance call per week there, usually on Friday or Saturday nights. And they all end up the same. Someone's husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend cheated on someone else, got caught and the frying pans start flying and breaking windows. Not much police can do. A lot of times, the police probably smell marijuana or see drug paraphernalia and arrest someone based on that evidence. It's the only thing they can do, really.

And it's because of the drug arrests that police are not welcome in this neighborhood. The police don't want to go in there and the majority of residence don't want any police in there hassling them. I'm sure there are programs provided by city/county/state that try to help the residence of this neighborhood. And some of them have come to rely on some of those programs. The programs that are just direct hand outs food, clothing, and coupons that local vendors will take in place of money are the most welcome programs. And when a wanted program provider slips and forgets something one week, I'm sure it goes public. And the reasons given for just about any apparent injustice are based purely on the color of the skin and not on the content of any one's character.

And when ever programs that try to provide any kind of tough love counseling are attempted, they are met with disdain and curse words. A few in there probably understand the tough love that's being attempted and honestly try to use those services in an attempt to get out of there. And when some of them see others about to get smart and get out of there, they destroy what ever it was that was about to help someone else. Those with destructive behavior don't want evidence that they are the ones holding everybody else back, they want to demonstrate to themselves they are the smartest ones in there by keeping themselves in some sort of barbaric tribal chief status by making sure no one else has more than they have.

I'm sure there's a smorgasbord of examples in this neighborhood some aspiring journalists can use to expose how bad America is and what can be done to fix it. And it's because of these types of exposes that have created the donor programs that have evolved into perpetual "all we need is just a little more" programs that do nothing more than create more demand for the product they hand out.

I escaped from a neighborhood/school/surrounding like this. I don't know why I was one who woke up one day, looked around, and said to myself, I gotta get outta here at any cost. When I did leave, I said to myself I'm never coming back here. When I left, I was bruised, battered and beaten, but I healed within a year. That was more than 30 years ago for me. I've been back recently, and nothing has changed except some people aren't around anymore. I can only assume they've moved up in the hierarchy of criminal institutions.

These are tough situations and require tough short-term solutions in order to achieve a longer term objective. But whenever tough short-term solutions are mentioned, the race card is played. And it continues...
