Oh, crap. I now have a working computer with freaking Win7 on it..... I am at a loss. 'Classic view'??? Not like any classic view I ever saw. It takes off on a whim without asking.... Hit the wrong icon and you are off into the hinterland. The network thingy does not even give me the option of having the cute little indicators of activity in the taskbar. I suspect I am gonna be pissed for quite some time now. I am gonna go puke......unless I instill some whiskey to calm me down. Meoooowwrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. is it that bad that a man like you can't manage it it must be bad you will likw maybe once you get to know it That seems at the moment to be a rather snide comment. I am a 52yo computer geek.....how old are YOU? I would still run NT4.0 if it worked anymore. It was stable as hell. So is XP. Now......do you wanna debate me on making an OS so self intuitive that a user with half a mind can't get where he wants to go?????? I don't like a computer OS that thinks it's smarter than I am, or knows in advance WTF I want to do. So far, this bites. Pretty, but it sucks big wind. EDIT... "Where do you want to go today........." My arse........thank you for asking. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." ![]() |

I am 57 sunday and i am new to computers, i always try to be nice to people its hard some times. its took me a year to learn how to work vista well enough to store my music some from 78 and 33 records OK.... Sorry if I was crass. You know where I am coming from then. I try to be nice to folks too, but yes, it is hard when I perceive they are coming across the wrong way. Sorry. I have about 5,000 vinyl LPs here that some have suggested I take the time to digitize before I die. Much is long out of print or obscure blues stuff. Just because I know hardware does not mean I get along well with the OSs......at least this new one. I can do pretty well with XP. This is just new to me, and it turns my kitty world inside out. When I hit a certain buttons, I expect certain answers or questions.....and this b.... just takes off on it's own. I don't like being one-upped by my own computer. Just be glad you never had to deal with Vista. :( Think of it this way: when you have Windows 7 figured out (and it won't take you long) you'll be ahead of the curve because most folks around here are still on XP but everyone not on Linux will have to upgrade eventually. Just be glad you never had to deal with Vista. :( I just may find a copy of XP x64 on ebay and start all over again if I get too frustrated. I missed Vista, mostly because so many others threw up all over it. And XP worked so well, I never had reason to. 7 is..... Like the way you type something into search and it just takes off without asking where you want to look. Unnerving to me. Like having a servant that run off hither and yon without really asking you what you would like them to do. Ask me first. I have found no 'old school' option so far. I only have a couple......Vaughn Monroe doing Moon of Manakura..and one cracked version of Elvis doing Mystery Train.....not playable anymore....alas. An old uncle of mine had thousands of them.......sadly, they burnt up in a house fire. Old Victrolas too. My stuff is mostly on vinyl....from the 70's on up. A bookmark would be Joan Baez's first record......on Vangauard Records.....I have two copies.....one for each of you (to paraphrase the movie Tombstone.....} one in Stereo, one in Monaural....... does o/s make pc faster or are they just to look diferent or more features Dunno about faster......but more stable......... That was the thing about older versions of Winders since NT.......when the app crashes, so did the OS.....when they became more stable, only the app crashed, you did not have to reboot every time the browser crashes. Greetings Mark, After reading your thread, I conclude that you're saying the Win7 is crap? I can see that, after seeing all those stupid commercials about it where all those "knowledgeable" people say that Win7 was their "idea". They ain't gotta clue. They're the type that DO need the computer to do things for them because they don't know how to do it themselves. ;) What is your opinion on running a decade old OS, like WinXP Pro 64 bit, on the current hardware technology like my i7? I've been having a problem with mine for the past few weeks, ever since I re-attached to Einstein when my SETI WUs finally dried up. If you go here, you can spend the afternoon reading all about it. That thread pretty much documents everything I have done to try to fix this problem, short of a clean install of WinXP Pro. Basically, the bottom line is, I cannot run BOINC because that is when the problem manifests. There's no WU crunching. I have done a re-install of BOINC. There seems to be no problem when not running BOINC. Well, it's all there in that thread on Einstein. Have a great day, Mark! :) BTW, I'll be 59 in 2 months, gotcha beat... :P Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I happen to have lived through those decades, and like running those 'decades old' OSs........... I have used them all my life....... You obviously don't understand, and I could not expect you to. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." ![]() |

Oh, crap. Eeeeeeeeeeek! I'm not the greatest fan of Win7... (Or should that be Win6? Look at the OS numbers!) But... It is a very good money spinner for tech support! If you're in for a bit of a change, take a look at the latest Kubuntu and see how much whiskey that needs for an install. Note: It is not Windows so the names are different, but the GUI works in exactly the same way, just different eye-candy. Oh, and don't try looking for any anti-virus, cos' there ain't one. Oh, and the firewall is optional and is not actually needed. Should be good for a giggle, meow? ;-) Happy crunchin', Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |
