Looks like the mining facilities where all those miners were trapped in Chile not long ago.
The antennas next to the building is a clear evidence of it being on a high terrain above sea level.
Maybe in the Atacama desert?

I'll say "yes" to both the mining association, and the high terrain.

Message 1048150 - Posted: 13 Nov 2010, 16:12:14 UTC - in response to Message 1048118.

Gary, I think all Richard meant by this is that it was to late to answer further questions. John will have his answer on Richard's morning.

Good morning everyone.

I guess Gary was actually drawing the attention of a n00b in this thread to the way I answered John's previous challenge, highlighting the rule against XCIF data. (Actually, shouldn't that be EXIF data?) I assumed it meant the GPS geotagging or similar data from a digital camera. I was just having a bit of fun at John's expense (sorry, John) by pointing out his challenge could be solved by use of no more sophisticated technology than the 'quote' button:

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h206/John_McLeod_VII/palace-of-the-governors-santa-fe-nmsfport.jpg

And after that, his question deserves an answer: Yes.

Yes the link was a mistake on my part. I forgot to check the file name (I was in a hurry and using a new tool to check EXIF data and forgot to check the file name as well). Yes, the rule was meant to prevent people from using embedded geotagging data.

When I originally wrote the rules, I misspelled EXIF as XCIF, and it has been copied incorrectly ever since.

Could we try to keep the game moving by not intentionally delaying answers to questions. Some games are going to last seconds, and others will last a week or so. We have had both extremes already.

Now, could I have an answer to my earlier question?

Is it is South America someplace?

As in the bit you quoted (last word):

Yes, it is in South America.

I hear ya. All I offer in mitigation is that the fast-moving games tend to lock the game onto one continent or near-by time zones. Please remember that this is a truly international message board.

Somewhere on the altiplano?

Oooh, tough one - had to go to my map box for that. We certainly crossed the altiplano to reach here, but technically - and I'm open to correction on this - I think I should say 'no' to being 'on' it.

(Edit - and I use the word 'crossed' to include either or both east-west and north-south)

Have to allow time for somebody else to get a question in! Yes, Bolivia.

Once we get an answer to this one, I have the new thread ready to go with corrected info.

Getting on for 24 hours since I posted (and I need time to answer questions before bedtime), so here are a couple more, concentrating on the mining link (my city pictures are too obvious - tomorrow, if nobody has it by then).

The first gives a clearer idea of the landscape - the second of the age of the photographs (if the colour of the beard under the green hat, is anything to go by!).

And although it's a working mine, it's also a famous tourist attraction - this is the sign above our heads:

Potosi?

We have a winner - Potosí, the highest and (one time) richest city in the world. Unesco (it's a World Heritage site) has the best image for the relationship of city and mountain, but here's my take on it:

Over to Carola for the honour of inaugurating the new thread.
