Message 1048426 - Posted: 14 Nov 2010, 18:41:22 UTC - in response to Message 1048424.

From what I understood
The Hi capacity cable is already up the hill
Seti is only being allowed part of it
and that the routers Seti has are not capable of more

That's too bad, Otherwise I'd think of upgrading to faster routers, But since Seti is only allowed a small part of the total capacity, then why bother.

Seti@home is inside the Space Science Lab. And by far the largest use of bandwidth.

An OC-3 is 3<typo edit> T3's, roughly 28X1.544MBPS(math edit)x3. Tack on a 100M router, and they are pretty full. ( I am guessing also the reason they never hit 100MBPS )

So OC12 or OC-48 should unclog the congestion completely (new optical hardware at least, depending on condition of existing fiber prehaps new fiber as well)

They keep trying to get more. In the mean time, we need to be as gentle as we can on it. Not something we are very good at. But the servers, we can and are helping with. They do not last forever.

What? Ya mean they don't? ;) Yeah and an OC12 or an OC48 would be great.

If it's not against the Rules, the staff could have a beer and pizza party
( with pictures maybe ) in celebration of the new servers. Pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom turkey for Thanksgiving? They can use my donation if anybody objects.

I think a certain person covered that. I will post an update tomorrow. Been a long day.

I am truly amazed that the contributions continue to come in to SETI. Previous history of contributions gave no indication that this kind of generosity on your part was to be expected. Each of you are to be congratulated for your generosity and support to SETI.

If It weren't for those Who visit the forums, Seti would be starving by now and quite possibly shut down too. Yes those at Seti have a lot of people to be Thankful to this Year at Thanksgiving, Especially when It comes time to carve up the Turkey on the 25th. Happy Thanksgiving All!

Now where's the Chainsaw? Mork needs to be carved. ;)

Message 1049514 - Posted: 19 Nov 2010, 7:52:30 UTC

I'm excited about the new hardware.

I've been crunching slowly since 5/99.

So I'm thinking to myself... I says, "Self, if you were to spend a few hundred on a nVidia card, you could out-crunch a bunch of folks."

Then I sits myself down and does a little talkin' t'me.

I says,

"Yeah, but Self, if you were to give dat money to dem men out at Berzerkely, then a whole bunch more people could crunch a lot more numbers than if you just spent it selfishly and foolishly thinkin' your pride is important. Ain't nobody gonna remember how many wu you crunched when you are gone. So, it's more important to just be helpin' somebody in findin' them little green fellas' trying to reach out to us from across maybe 100,000 light years of distance."

But that devil on the other shoulder kept tellin' me it would be more fun to own somethin' with the name of Tesla on it, and since I can't afford me the car, I figured somethin' I could plug in that might help keep the shack warm in the winter would do.

But that would be wrong; putting myself ahead of the whole goal like that.

So I has mysef all convinced that even here close to dat river and dat bayou I don't need no more heat anyoldhow.

Gotta dribble it out in drabs, but then, we don't get in a hurry much around here.

Now ya'll, just cause we got us two new servers don't mean there ain't nothin' else they need. Last I hear, we gotta whole lotta data that gotta be looked-at for the second time.

Thank you for your gift to the SETI@home.

Message 1049825 - Posted: 20 Nov 2010, 4:55:26 UTC - in response to Message 1049516.

Dem gaitas gots so many dem rats to chew dey leave my chat be (all 13 of dem).

Most night we got chaoui in dat carport and we even feedin' dat oppossum on ocassion; love dat O.N.E. I says "Shoo possum, doan be eatin' d'chat's O.N.E." and dat possum look to me an hiss somethin' horrible. The chaoui pay me no mind at oll. I holler at dem, but day just look to me as if to say, "You crazy. Dis chat chow too good to pass-up main."

Okay, I'm all out of cajun... and everything else.

Seems to me you did really well raising funds when we knew exactly what the funds were needed-for. I've always found it was easier to get people to "buy a thing" than to simply donate money - even when someone else was doing the buying.

The whole "Donate to SETI" may be classic, but it's also boring. "Help us buy a new ____!" is so much easier to get your mind around.

"This is Eric. There are almost a dozen just like him who wake-up every morning hungry for more drives in their RAID array; hoping someone like you will donate just $0.25 per day to help them keep what hair they have left."

Or there's the other tactic - "Let's see how much electricity we can use that Berkeley will pay for."

In any case I hate to see the momentum fade when I know there must be something else needed. From what little I've read, there's an awful lot of pre-crunched data sitting around that has to be gone-through. Who knows, we might already have a signal from some long-dead race of ETs out there, somewhere.

Somebody's gonna have to have one heckuva number-comparing-fool desktop supercomputer to sift through it all. I'd hate for it to take a decade to review a decade's worth of crunching.

And yes, I really am feeding, vet-taking, and de-fleaing 13 cats, none of whom I found. They all found me. 100lbs of "dietary" DE at the front door now just to keep the yard fleas only ankle deep this year.

I'm just blessed like that. <heavy sigh> Soft heart / soft head to match.

Trick or Treaters lead a kitten to the front door and he just came-on-in like he owned the place. Fortunately, that one was wearing ID.

None of these are able to make any more, so I'm just a magnet, not a source.

Anybody want a young cat or two?

"what do ya say darling..should I luv him?....I dunno, there is just sumpthing is his eyes. Reminds me of..........me. Yup, that's it. I luv hum."

You appear to be a man among men in this kittyman's heart. So glad you came along.

Yes...most folks find it easier to unbuckle the boots when they know what in tarnation they have a hand in. That's why, I suspect, many have found it in their hearts to have a hand in this round of fund drives.

It was not the coffee pot......or just buying the boyz a round at the bar.
It was substantive......and real. No BS here.
That's why it worked. I did not BS.......
And the results were no BS either.....we have hard evidence in the form of TWO new HP servers in the closet, about to go hot any day now. Carolyn is already being tested.

I tink dem gator best be goin' along der way....cuz da kitty folks are about to cut loose wit dat server. And ya know how dem kitties are when dey get dat wild bug up der butt.

Thanks, man.

Mark

Go shoo dem gators now.

Mark
