I downloaded Seti a couple of days ago. I know its is processing information but not sure what exactly? I dont mind donating some system resources. Is there any thing I get out of it? What i mean is can i read the information it's processing or get a summery report? And is there any thing else i can do as far directing the projects it should be working on? And how do i know what project to pick from?

Thanks guys

Welcome to SETI@Home! What you are doing is analyzing radio signals from Arecibo in Peurto Rico, looking for signs of intelligent life other within 100 light years. The software you downloaded is directing your computer to "crunch" that data. You will notice that your system is running at 100% throttle while you analyze the data. This means that your CPU is much hotter than it is when it is just sitting idle. SETI @ Home is undergoing some bumps in the road (problems) at the moment, but I am glad you were able to get some data and started working on it. The only value you get is the knowledge that you are helping in the search. You do get a total score for the work units you have crunched, as well as an average credit, based on how fast your computer does the work. As for which projects to join, that is up to you. You can read the descriptions of the available projects, and if one sounds like someting you are interested in, then you can join. Your available processing power will be devided among the projects you choose.

I reccomend reading many of the threads and posts here, as there is an enormous amount of information here. The folks are very friendly, and will help you with specific questions. Good luck, and welcome to distributed computing!

Steve

Hi Sal, and welcome to the forums. What a treat to see a message that isn't complaining about something.

As a rank amateur for several years, I have found a few ways to track my progress through BOINC in general and S@H in particular. Here is what works for me. Keep in mind that all the projects tend to be fairly long term, so this is NOT something where you can see results update second by second, or make changes in how you run or what projects you run, and immediately see results. The time scale is at least days, more like weeks or even months for some projects.

First, the best immediate source of info is the BOINC Manager screens. Open up BOINC Manager. If you see a small window with a few controls at the bottom, click on "Advanced View" to get to the interesting stuff.

This should give you lots of tabs to move between. Each screen has assorted data. Study them for awhile, and ask questions here about anything you don't understand. It would take me hours to describe everything you can see here. This set of screens is all about the work being done on the computer you view the pages on.

Next, go to the SETI @ Home pages. From the advanced view of BOINC Manager, you can click on SETI on the projects tab, and this will bring up a menu on the left of the various SETI web pages available. some give you general project info, but some will lead you to info about your work. Most projects call the work you do in a project your "account", and it can include work done on more than one computer. Again, browse around, try the help buttons, and post more questions here.

Next are the various sites that collect statistics, including yours. From the SETI home page, click on "Your Account" on the top tool bar. Scroll down on this page, and you should come to a section headed "computing and credit". In this section there are several cross-project stats sites to visit. These generally show your results in various colorful graphs, and let you compare your progress with others working on the same project. Each shows slightly different data, in slightly different ways. I'm partial to BOINCstats, but that's just me.

As for which projects to choose, that is all up to you. Each project has a home page, that you can find by Googling BOINC, or by going to "Tools" -> "Attach to a project" in the BONIC Manager advanced view. This will give you a list of home pages. Each home page will tell you what the project is trying to do. Follow your head, or your heart, as you see fit.

PS - just tried to find you in BOINCstats, and all I can see is a message about "not in BOINCstats yet". It make take a few days for you to show up there. And yes, everybody can see some of your stats, and you can see some of everybody else's.
