Well, after due consideration, and the seeming lack of interest from the seti staff to resolve or even engage with contributor's about what is (or not!) happening, I'm ceasing my contribution to this project. A sad attitude indeed. My four measly machines manage to keep busy by simply participating in one or more of the dozens of other available projects. The folks at SETI, IMHO, do a remarkable job with the markedly limited resources they've been saddled with. You've stopped contributing - I've doubled my contribution and donation, albeit small. The sad part is, Ged has posted four times, and the oldest, a thousand days ago, is pretty much like this one. |

Are people making money off of their SETI credits? I can't see any other reason for being so upset because it's down. They must be loosing big time to be that upset. Take a deep breath, relax, maybe get on another project while you're waiting, but stay cool. |

Take a deep breath, relax, maybe get on another project while you're waiting, but stay cool. I wouldn't say upset really.... Most of those who bother to post in these forums are avid Seti project supporters. Some have valid beefs about the way things work, and voice their opinions. Mostly, I think we are just disappointed when we cannot contribute at the level we are used to doing. So, we complain a little, and look for answers to the problem. I think they need to find a bigger support group, admit to who they are, and come out of the closet. They needn't be ashamed. There must be a better place for them. They shouldn't have to hide. ;-) |

Voicing complaints is fine, but what I seem to hear mostly is a lot of pissing and moaning about RACs falling. Not being able to contribute at the level one is used to doing seems to be a misguided effort to begin with. One should never expect to contribute at 100%, 100% of the time when dealing with projects such as SETI and it's budget/server issues that we are all aware of. It really should all be taken in stride, IMHO. If I go to my local homeless shelter and I can't put in 100% effort for some reason, it's fine by me. I could complain about wasting gas driving down there, but I do it by choice to begin with. I think less complaining and more understanding go a long way to being happier overall. Unless you like complaining and being upset.... |

Voicing complaints is fine, but what I seem to hear mostly is a lot of pissing and moaning about RACs falling. Well, as I said, not upset, really. Some of us are just passionate about what we do. Call it manic/depressive. Call it OCD. Call it driven. Call it whatever you like. Call it me. I am that way in most things I do. Just because the project does not promise 100% does not mean I will not try to give it my 100%. And I realize that the project does not have the resources to do so. I am not bashing Seti in the least. You must realize that, don't you? That does not mean I won't put my 2 cents in on a regular basis, and point out what I see for others to comment on. Like yourself. There are many times when we 'complainers' have pointed the way to solutions or problems that the staff had not thought of or realized were happening at the time. Call it constructive criticism. If I would win the lottery things could be different, of course. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I have no problem with constructive criticism, or being driven, or dedicated. Those are all good traits if taken in moderation. I wouldn't even say I'm necessarily talking about you specifically. I just get tired of reading flame complaints like Ged and those like him. Wasted anger and frustration that leads to a life of discontent, IMO. I think we, as a human race often insist on putting more into things than really should be. Everyone is free to do as they please, it just seems a waste of unnecessary energy to be so upset all the time (or every time there's a server problem). It just simply isn't a big deal if there's a problem. It'll be fixed when it gets fixed and no sooner. |

I got up to #66 top host steadily, surely, and remain there at the moment until the flood of pending files get in. A couple weeks ago I invested in a GTX295 card for SETI 95% of the time that I'm not gaming...and I'm all out of CUDA jobs days ago. However, I don't care b/c it is for the cause that we all seek. More major crunching will come and I have faith in these guys to do their best to resolve the issues. I just wish everyone else had the same amount of patience. |

for thermal control of computer rooms we find an item some can special at http://froggyhome.com/index.php. A sensors set, packaged in a very nice frog, you plug it into your PC to have an accurate barometer, thermometer, hygrometer and data logger. it could be used with Windows or linux we use the thermal info to drive the compute to safely shutdown if someting gose wrong via SNMP /IPMI peronik |

Who think everything is well with the SETI@home servers/connection? I have since days only: 2/19/2010 10:39:26 AM SETI@home Temporarily failed upload of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: HTTP error and 2/19/2010 9:19:37 AM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 2/19/2010 9:19:39 AM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down. 2/19/2010 9:19:40 AM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server The PCs idle and can't UL. Because of this no work request. The Inet connection of the servers are cutted 50 %? My BOINCs can't reach the servers. The Cricket Graph show: DL: 31.96 Mbits/sec UL: 6.89 Mbits/sec ..of the last router between SETI@home and us.. and nothing happen on my PCs. Someone know how long it will last?? So I could switch off my PCs and could safe ~ 400 W idle money. ____________ [Optimized project applications, for to increase your PC performance (double RAC)!][Overview of abbreviations, which are used often in forum and their meaning.] |

http://fragment1.berkeley.edu/newcricket/grapher.cgi?target=%2Frouter-interfaces%2Finr-250%2Fgigabitethernet2_3;view=Octets;ranges=d%3Aw I... think 2_3 is in the lab going down the hill, and I think 5_1 is at the bottom of the hill. Not 100% sure on that, but I think 2_3 tends to be more accurate. It is only a 100mbit link, and I have seen 5_1 report upwards of 140mbit before, whereas I have never seen 2_3 report more than 98mbit, which is realistic. Well, shoot. Right at the end of the work day yesterday the air conditioning unit failed. since the A/C system isn't designed to be redundent for a server farm, perhaps it would be a good idea to let the servers "out of the closet", and put them back in the lab (i don't know the size of your lab, but i would think the lab would have a larger thremal mass then a closet). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kEerkUgQuw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlgRJC3DKMs&feature=related |

I'd just like to say "thank you" to Matt and all at SETI, I know they are just as keen as the most rabid poster on this thread to get everything back up and running. I would hate too have to go through all the tests and checks they will to ensure that the A/C fail do not do to much damage. So Matt and all the rest of you, THANK YOU. Bob Swift |
