Hi - just a quick note to say happy new year and we are slowly ramping up services/etc. again after the time away. Well, it wasn't really time away, as Jeff and I (and Eric and Dan) were all around dealing with the planned, massive lab wide power outages during the holidays. Of course there were some glitches, not sure if I'll ever get around to spelling them all out... nothing really all that exciting except one file server keeps coming up in "forced RAID resync" mode despite going down gracefully. This is why we're still keeping the project offline for now. Not so great, but I took the opportunity to do tomorrow's usual outage today. So once the RAID is resync'ed (tomorrow morning, hopefully), we'll turn everything on. That one mysql database server did crash again, as it usually does, thus getting the replica out of whack. I'm also cleaning that up today. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. What is hard is to do it." - Jeanne-Claude |

Matt, I have a server-class RAID card that also does that whenever I shutdown from Windows XP. There are two solutions to my knowledge: 1) Install a battery-backup on RAID card; 2) Reboot (instead of shutdown) and wait at the OS Loader (GRUB) menu for a few seconds. This gives the RAID card plenty of time to write all buffers. If you RAID card is 3WARE/AMCC, be sure the firmware is configured for "Balance" or "Protected". Power-down after all drives are idle. |

Happy New Year to everyone at Berkeley and all crunchers around the world. Glad things went well for you guys during the outage. Seems like the new Kepler Space Telescope is doing well. I am sure ET can wait until things recover before sending a signal to you guys or dropping a few ascii art photons into the Photometer of the KST :-) P.S Just realized I am so close to a million credits, hopefully will pass that milestone very soon post outage! |

... one file server keeps coming up in "forced RAID resync" mode despite going down gracefully. This is why we're still keeping the project offline for now. Not so great... That can be rather annoying... And dubious if you were to get a disk failure whilst the RAID was rebuilding... Is that hardware or software raid? And which OS/version? Hello Glenn, hello everybody, Happy new year ! I guess the scheduler server, disabled, is blocking the other servers who are running. Things will come back in a moment. It means a big upload day for everybody. Bsts rgards. Lionel. |

Hi, "Happy New Decade" to all. I have similar "upload" problems. Did manage to upload to of the three that were waiting. If I have got this straight, it is the "scheduler" that is impacting the upload process? Is this a server? which one. Thanks for all the information you provide on a rather consistent basis. It really helps to have an idea of what is going on and it tends to ease the onus of down time. Thanks again, ront |

"Happy New Decade" to all. There are many people that know the new decade doesn't start until next year. Just like the millennium didn't start until 2001. There was no year 0, so 1-10 is the decade. It always starts on the 1. My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

"Happy New Decade" to all. Well a decade is just a period of 10 years. So every year is a new decade. Generally people like to group periods like say the '90's into decades. I think the term I've heard for 2000-2009 is the naughts, & I'm sure people will call 2010-2019 the "teens" even those 10, 11, & 12 are not 'teen numbers. I personally have been confusing my friends my telling them it's a new century. Actually 2001 was a milestone year: A new decade (10) A new century (100) A new sesquicentennial (150) A new bicentennial (200) A new semiquincentennial (250) A new quadricentennial (400) A new quincentennial (500) A bew millennial (1000) And the first bimillennial (2000) It was a really awesome year math wise. Of course, it is common sense (??) to all those people that click the stopwatch to time a 100 metre race at the commencement of the hundredth metre!!!! They all get much better times than those who finish at the end of the hundredth metre!!!! But, of course, the whole argument can be solved if all the runners "Get set and Go" a metre behind the starting line. What incredible logic the whole world was led to believe at the so-called end of the millennium!!!! Keith |

Actually 2001 was a milestone year: Not counting from year 1, it wasn’t: the current ‘sesquicentury’ began in 1951 and will end with 2100. |

Actually 2001 was a milestone year: The first time that they all line up including the sesquicentennial is 6001. It would have been 3001 except for that pesky quadricentenial. BOINC WIKI |

Of course, it is common sense (??) to all those people that click the stopwatch to time a 100 metre race at the commencement of the hundredth metre!!!! We are inconsistent in the way we refer to time. We refer to dates by the year, month and day that we are in (starting at 1), but within the day, by hours and minutes completed (1 o'clock occurs an hour into the day). |
