Give them the benefit of the doubt, until proven otherwise.

There wasn't much doubt in my mind, and their last couple of posts have removed what little doubt there was & proven it otherwise.
I'd suggest saving your efforts for those that really do want help.

Fair enough.........

If that is where you are.....
We will help you. If you ask for it.

I am losing my sight too......

Mind you, if you are screwing with us, you will have no sympathy here.

So, drop the BS, and give one real question you would like answered, and we will try to help......otherwise, your bluff is called.

this thread started as a general warning to new users and those that had trouble but then it was moved from cuda to number crunhing so i was not asking for help i do know about the other program that can change and improve seti my point was that normal people would find it to much hassell to fix and drop out but if there was a warning that didn't require a lot of reading , aka the facts page people would not nessary be turned off the project so blame ozzie ozborne for starting this in this section of the messageboard.

Taking a look at the records, you posted in the Questions & Answers section "CUDA". Since you thread was clearly not a question and merely a rant and debate, it was moved here.

I am trying to make the powers whom run seti see that they have made error in the way this progect is run .And let people know some off the efects of useing the cuda chip for seti if you use it be prepared to understand that you will not be able to use the computer without disableing seti or cuda and hopeing that the next release of seti will have all the things to make it work well and user freindly which it is not at the moment so why don't you think about what i am trying to make you's see .This project has become a very complecated thing to use for normal people. But i guess people don't like to be told they stuffed up when they where sent cuda from nvida which was a marketing ploy which you fell for and we got problems because of it . Just because it works does not mean that it was a good idea if it discurages people from useing it .I know peole that would have been part of it still if it wasn't so hard for them or didn't need so much fiddlying all the time .As for a warning for cuda i still think there should be 1 with the heading of warning for cuda seeing as you are better at grammer maybe you can post a warning instead of being arrogent and expecting people to understand all the facts as the facts page i'm shore does not say that it will cause problems and should be only used by people that have a good understanding of computers it should be a simple and quick warning that is easily noticed when you go to the message boards not hiden in the facts page with evrthing else about cuda. But i guess you guys have had a lot of experince with dealing with people and computers . And let people know some off the efects of useing the cuda chip for seti if you use it be prepared to understand that you will not be able to use the computer

The default preference settings both in the web-preferences and in the local advanced preferences in BOINC Manager is that the GPU calculation option will only be used when you are not using the computer, when it is otherwise idle.

As soon as you start using the computer, CUDA in this case will stop working, until you leave the computer again and it goes idle after so many minutes.

If your experience differs, you have changed the preferences. Or you are using an older BOINC version that did things differently. Since we're at BOINC 6.10.18 to 6.10.21 at this moment in time, perhaps it's wise to update.

[...]
This machine is getting a RAC of 49,500+ using a current AMD Phenom II X4 BE and a dual GeForce GTX 260 with each video card having two GPUs (for a total of 4 CUDA processors). A normal Phenom II X4 get about a 4,000 to 6,000 RAC on it's own.
[...]

Ohh.. my nice GPU cruncher was mentioned..

This GPU cruncher have 4x OCed GTX260-216. (~ 58,000 RAC peak, now less because of the last unplanned server outage)
If only CPU I guess, ~ 4,500 RAC. (Never made 24/7, only some WUs for test)
So I let run only CUDA, for max. GPU performance.

OzzFan, I guess you thought to the GTX295 which have two GPU chips inside.

Glenn savill, long thread - so I don't know if the opt._apps were mentioned which 'kill' these VLARs.
Small look in my profile (where you could DL) and you will be surprised how high your RAC will be.

BTW. Your keyboard have also a [RETURN] key? Then it would be easier for to read your posts.

I know you are tying to help me but i have tried the upgrade and it didn't pick up the gpu so i rolledback to 6.6 . When i am waching tv which i do a lot seeing as i can not afford a tv yet disableing the graphic gpu only works for about 5 mintes then it starts up i don't use the keyboard or mouse while i'm waching tv and this is when then gpu starts causing my screen to stop , i lose the channels and the mouse and keyboard give me headaces .Maybe when i carm down i will try the other program meationed here in this thread but to be honest i'm starting to get the shits whith it and will probbly just stop useing the cuda chip altogeather and just use the cpu's as i don't have any problems with it .I have tried all the things exept useing the extra program and everthing has failed .After reading all the problems on the message board about cuda i'm thinking stuff it .

Glenn savill, I saw also (additional to my other post here in this thread) that you let run the old nVIDIA_driver_182.50 .
The first, take the nVIDIA_driver_190.x and look if your probs will continue.

There is also 191.x and 195.x out, but before look in this following thread if it's worth.

[Anyone else using CUDA 3.0 dlls?]

I know you are tying to help me but i have tried the upgrade and it didn't pick up the gpu

That is because you use the 182.50 drivers. BOINC 6.10 requires, at minimum, 185.85 (CUDA 2.2 compatible) drivers.

When i am waching tv which i do a lot seeing as i can not afford a tv yet disableing the graphic gpu only works for about 5 mintes then it starts up

Yes, well... had you read my FAQ, you would've seen by now that:

A) The official advice is:
- If you have a dedicated gaming rig, then do not run BOINC/CUDA/CAL at the same time you are playing your game, or only run it when you aren't gaming.
- When you love to watch DVDs or use a TV tuner, do not use BOINC/CUDA/CAL at the same time. This will impact your viewing experience. (stutters, slow-downs)
- When using a screen saver, remember that the GPU is used to render the screen saver's graphics. Just do not use a screen saver and turn off your monitor before you leave, or let it go to blank.

B) Ways around it?
First and foremost is to exit BOINC before you start gaming or doing your other GPU intensive thing.
BOINC Manager->File->Exit, check "stop running of science applications when exiting BOINC Manager" and click OK.
Restarting BOINC Manager will also restart the BOINC service (if you installed it that way).

Or using the <exclusive_app> option in a cc_config.xml file, as that's supported since BOINC 6.6. Since the 6.10.19 version of BOINC, there is even an <exclusive_gpu_app> option, which will stop doing work on the GPU as soon as the program set in that line is detected in memory.

The information is there. If you still don't want to use it and keep on ranting and making damn sure that new people do not use CUDA on Seti, then be my guest. Yet again, from past experience with how people use these forums, your message may reach 10 people. If at least they manage to find what you are trying to say.

Glenn savill, you let run also stock_apps on your CPU.
Take the opt._apps for your CPU and you will double your RAC.

I have only One question;

Is geek another word for intelligent -
and normal another word for stupid..? ;-)

Well.. Im not a geek - so what am I?
..and this should go for 95% of the people..?
Im afraid you have got it wrong somehow.
And btw.. by being a "geek", you should get it all to work just fine, and
be happy - right?
Oh.. btw2.. I know some geeks who I will say is pretty much normal. ;-D
Have a lovely day - and keep smiling. ;-)))

They sure are, I have learned so much here. Of course I don't come here telling everyone how stupid they are especially when they are trying to help me. Heck I built a totally different machine than I started to build because of all the help from this forum. I knew absolutely nothing about Cuda and had all kinds of problems and the nice people here helped me through every one of them. So I really do appriciate all the friendly helpful people on this forum.

1) Most normal people don't watch TV on their PC. They use the television for that.

2) My girlfriend's family seems to have hereditary dyslexia. When I show any of them how to spell correctly, they learn from it. Dyslexia is a miswiring in the brain, but there are ways to learn to live with it, it simply requires you to use different methods of learning. When I showed you the correct spelling of Ozzy Osbourne and you continuously misspell it, it makes me believe you're not interested in learning. This entire thread is a misinformed "warning", suggesting that you already have all the knowledge you need to know about CUDA and you want to give an authoritative alert to all others. But when others try to fill in your incorrect knowledge about CUDA (hence, more learning), you argue and resist the new knowledge that is being given to you.

3) If you were truly a geek, most geeks want to conquer all technology. If you could not get CUDA configured right on your system with the plethora of options and help systems available, then you didn't try hard enough. As Ageless (Jord) has posted, even if you don't use your keyboard and mouse while watching TV, there is a different option for you to disallow crunching that has been provided with his FAQ.

4) While I may agree that some people will be turned off by CUDA's tendency to make the system sluggish while performing certain tasks, this is no different than SETI@Home itself on the CPU. We've been battling for years in the Questions and Answers forum trying to help people understand CPU processing, OS priority levels and the like. Will everyone understand it? No. Will it prevent people from leaving the project? No.

Bottom line is if people leave the project based upon a false perception that they refuse to ask questions about (so that the professionals can help them), or simply learn more about what they're doing and what's going on, then there's nothing we can do to "save" them. Taking away CUDA, which has helped the project tremendously, is simply not going to happen. But there are options to turn it off completely without aborting workunits if people bother to ask and learn.

We can only help the ones that want help. If they leave without asking for it, then the project wasn't for them.
