Glenn, I see you're aborting CUDA tasks, then get more, abort those, get more, abort those. Why don't you tell Seti you do not want to use CUDA? Much easier. Your account Seti@Home preferences Edit them. Uncheck the option "Use NVIDIA GPU if present (enforced by 6.10+ clients)". Uncheck the option "Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available". Save changes to the website. Open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti@Home->Click the Update button on the left. |

I really miss the point he is trying to make. I think mostly the last one. |

The point is normal people do not have the expertise understand what VLARS are or angles so i say again it is stupid .Normal people would load the program and keep useing there computers ,but if they start haveing trouble with there mouses or vidoe they might be useing they will probly drop off the project . Remember there was over 3 million users when this project started so i am saying that it was stupid computers had finally got to a point where you could do seti and anything else you whonted to do and then some dule spark came up with let's let cuda do more work and then sudenly the home computer became a dog and i suspect this is why if fact i know it's why people stoped useing seti i have freinds that stoped for this very reason useing cuda with the cpu is great but to use the cuda as well by itself is the stupid thing people still need to use there computers and all the tech for the last 10 years has been wasted when talking about seti if we still had 3 million users with todays systems then we would be doing a freaking hell of a lot more science .But the popularity of seti is no longer and that is why it was and is stupid to use the cuda units .The smart thing would have been to use cuda with the cpu's and let people use there computers without all the rubbish turning seti on or off it could just run in the background and nobody would have noticed and there would have been more users and more scince dun. so as Forrest gump says stupid is as stupid does. And you should have keeped the warning where it was to explain to people that if they use cuda then they will not be able to do much else. OH but that would have been telling the truth and good old USA always tells lie's dishonset country and dishonest people the finacail crisis proves that . OH yes my country is now the strongest currency in the world wonder why ozzie ozzie ozzie oy oy oy |

Well, if you don't like SETI@home, stop running it and go somewhere else, to put it bluntly. Because right now, you are making it quite clear that you don't want to be here. Also, keep the political crap out of the number crunching forum. - Luke. |

Glenn......my friend. Chill. You are now bringing politics into a discussion about Cuda crunching. What is it you want? Cuda cards can crunch much faster then CPUs...with the right setup. Sure, the old rigs are no longer the fastest rigs running, but they still outnumber the ones using Cuda, and contribute more work to the project overall, given their vast numbers. If you just run the stock Seti apps, your computer will do what it can to the best of it's ability......no need to understand angle ranges and such. Only if you wish to push beyond the stock application do you need to learn such things. If you do not wish to, that is fine. Your computer will continue to contribute. And I hope you do. bro i started downloading the units but it keep stalling my mose and i got the shits and dumped all of them i am not download anymore units and will change the preff later .Ozzie i am NOT DOING ANY CUDA UNITS I DUMPED LAST NIGHT ONLY GOT seti 6.03 units left ok Also i am not saying that cuda is slower than the cpu's most of the time it will do them faster much faster but as you have said in this thread there are units that take way to long to allow the gpu to do them and i can not understand why these units are left to the cuda chip if the cuda chip is haveing triuble then the cpu should be doing them and i can do other things without my mouse jumping around the screen it get so bad i can't even disable seti sometimes got it now? |

The point is normal people do not have the expertise understand what VLARS are or angles so i say again it is stupid .Normal people would load the program and keep useing there computers ,but if they start haveing trouble with there mouses or vidoe they might be useing they will probly drop off the project Normally people would then go look for what could cause this. Read the manual, ask a neighbour, ask a (computer literate) friend, ask on the forums. Normally they'd be glad they got an answer from any of us, who try to explain in a normal and calm way what is happening or what could cause the slow-downs. Normally they'd drop their rant at that point. ...and then some dule spark came up with let's let cuda do more work That 'dule spark' was Nvidia, who approached the BOINC developers & Seti with their newfangled invention. and then sudenly the home computer became a dog and i suspect this is why if fact i know it's why people stoped useing seti i have freinds that stoped for this very reason useing cuda with the cpu is great but to use the cuda as well by itself is the stupid thing So? Disable crunching with the GPU. Disable BOINC from even trying to detect if a usable GPU is in the system. Don't be afraid to ask for help on that, there's plenty of people here who would help you and your friends. But the popularity of seti is no longer and that is why it was and is stupid to use the cuda units .The smart thing would have been to use cuda with the cpu's I don't think you know what CUDA is. Besides it being an acronym for Compute Unified Device Architecture, it is "a parallel computing architecture developed by NVIDIA. CUDA is the computing engine in NVIDIA graphics processing units or GPUs that is accessible to software developers through industry standard programming languages." (source Wikipedia CUDA) and let people use there computers without all the rubbish turning seti on or off That is why in all preferences using the GPU to do work while the computer is in use is set to No. You have to change that preference for CUDA to run always. It didn't do that on its own, not even in BOINC 6.6.20 And you should have keeped the warning where it was to explain to people that if they use cuda then they will not be able to do much else. Seeing how not many people read other people's threads, let alone any stickies, how is that going to help? Besides, did all your friends ("i know it's why people stoped useing seti i have freinds that stoped for this very reason") look for any explanation? Have you already checked my FAQ? |

You are saying that Cuda crunching is interfering with other operations on your computer....... And this I cannot help you with. I have read from others that some have problems, and some have none. But, as my 3 Cuda rigs do nothing else but crunch for Seti, I do not have the same conflict as some who do Cuda on their only computer. Maybe some others will have some better suggestions for you. As was posted by Ageless, you can turn it off if it really becomes a problem for your computer. Best of luck, and please stay with the project. We will all be here to help you further if you wish it. People; remember the number 1 rule of forums- ignore idiots & trolls. They hang around if there are people to play with. Ignore them & they get bored & head off for greener pastures. Grant Darwin NT |

Or you can try to help them until they run off screaming into the distance....LOL. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

Unfortunately, that just encourages them to hang around. If they actually ask a legitimate question, and then don't ignore or argue about the answer- fair enough. But most will take a valid answer & then use that for their next angle of attack. Grant Darwin NT |

i can not understand why these units are left to the cuda chip if the cuda chip is haveing triuble then the cpu should be doing them and i can do other things without my mouse jumping around the screen it get so bad i can't even disable seti sometimes got it now? Seti_Enhanced tasks just comes as that, there are no separate CUDA tasks or CPU tasks. When your computer is asking for work, be it for the CPU or for the GPU, it will ask the exact same work from the Seti server and get that. There is no way (at this time) that the Seti server knows what the angle range is of the work that was split and is being given out. There is an application available, Reschedule 1.9 made by Lunatics, which will reschedule the work after it has come on your computer. This application will read the angle range in the actual tasks on your computer, deduce from that what they are and if need be reschedule them for the CPU. You will have to run it separately, with BOINC off (I believe, I'm sure one of the CUDA crunchers who used this app can help you along, if you ask). But as I already said, the original preference setting for "Suspend GPU work while computer is in use?" is set to Yes. (I know it says there that it's enforced by 6.7+, but that's a typo. It was in use by early versions of 6.6 already). A similar setting can be found in the Local Advanced Preferences in BOINC Manager, where it is also off by default. If you then turn it on, and then come complaining it interferes with your work, then perhaps it is time to look closer to home for an explanation. Or try to figure out why they could have possibly set the option to "off" by default. |

But they cannot handle it if you continue to give them valid advice instead of argument. You have to consider the possibility that they are not expressing themselves clearly or are posting out of frustration with things they do not quite understand. Give them the benefit of the doubt, until proven otherwise. Try to help, rather than ridicule. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

So, is that what's got your Cuda in a bundle, eh? "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

I just want to know one thing. Is English your native language? I sure hope it's not, because I can hardly read your posts. With your run-on sentences, bad grammar and piss poor spelling, you're giving me a headache. If you are a product of the American education system, then you didn't get your money's worth. If you learned English as a second language, then you didn't get your money's worth either. For the record, I have problems from time to time with my mouse too. It seems some work CUDA units take up more video memory than others, which cuts into available memory for screen rewrites and such. I'm not complaining about it, just making note of it. If I need a super smooth mouse, I turn off GPU processing, otherwise I just grin and bear it. |

i feel as if i have benn vindicated by the comments here . 1 nvida gives you a new toy cuda program then do not wish to support it ! 2 by your own admision cuda can't handel low or high Vlar's but you still allow cuda to do it 3 if i can't disable seti sometimes then how am i supposed to turn cuda off 4 even disableing graphic under preferances doesn't work it turns on after about 5 minutes of no activiaty ( not useing mouse or keyboard ) i tryed that so stupid stupid stupid only choice is to not do cuda units 5 there are less user than the project had before it was changed and my freinds didn't whant to know how to fix problems with seti there fore they stop it alltogeather |

i feel as if i have benn vindicated by the comments here . OK......... If all you want to do is rant......so be it. If you want to calm down and ask for help with your questions, one at a time, others are here to help you. Otherwise, bug off. Everyone else....I tried, didn't I? Give them the benefit of the doubt, until proven otherwise. There wasn't much doubt in my mind, and their last couple of posts have removed what little doubt there was & proven it otherwise. I'd suggest saving your efforts for those that really do want help. Grant Darwin NT |
