Spamming the school district won't help Nez, and may very well make things worse.

Wonder if NEZ had his machine locations set to "School" :-)

(Gotta lighten this thread up a bit somehow !!)

Ok. Why don't we get to the bottom of this. Let's say the school district had old pc's, which is a valid assumption. Let's say they are probably Pentium 4's. So he had to have over 1000 computers running 24/7. Let's also say that the CPU's consume an average of 25 watts of power extra when at 100% instead of idle. Let's calculate how much electricity money he caused the school to loose.

25*24= 600 watt hours per computer per day.
600*1000=600,000 watt hours per day total.

Now we pay 10 cents per KWH so we can assume he caused the school district $60 per day. That's $21,900 per year or $197,100 over 9 years. That's not a small amount of money. That's actually quite a bit.

Just my 2 cents.

By the way, I think it is all political anyway. If he was running some other boinc project to help find a cure for cancer they would not make such a fuss about it, because it would make the district look bad. Because of seti all of these news articles label his as some kind of UFO lunatic or something.
This problem goes beyond just this incident. It's a problem with U.S. society in general.

none of the above,

Unfortunetly the misinformation about Boinc/Seti is being spread far and wide by AP

I see that we get a photo of the man himself from the second (very long) link,
and the husd.org link seems to be suffering from a slashdoting, nez will probably get the blame for that as well.
and as far as his RAC, its been dropping for the last year or two, so he seems to have taken action to reduce his output after his 2006 warning.

The Bottom Line is there will be no more NEZ or at least on the Epic Scale that he was at anyway whether he was Guilty of something or not. He may be able to run a few Borged Computers or Un-Borged Computers of his own on a Lesser Scale but that will be it for him I imagine unless he can land another job that he can get his hands on another 5000 Computers to run SETI on with or without Authorization, your God has Fallen to Mere Mortal Status so you all will have to find another God to put up on a Pedestal & Idol Worship.

I've seen it happen to a few others since I've been running BOINC. they come out of no where to put up a ton of Credits in a short period of time and then their gone & never to be heard from again.

As far as the Computers wearing out quicker. Thats bunk as well.

All those hours running 24/7 add up to MTBF for HDD's too! Adding in lost data and bandwidth on the network.`

And what kind of CPUs did they use that 2,300 of them burned through from running 24/7? Must be the cheapest Cyrix versions ever known to man.

These might be slim-profile cases designed for light use and admin work without the extra cooling and airflow of the servers and workstations most crunchers use.

However well-meaning it's like a city or state employee driving a municipal vehicle all over town for his personal interests. Fact is one of the major costs for any town is the school system - ask anyone who pays property tax.

Yeah, the most efficient P4 systems I have typically consume 60W idle and at least 110 crunching 100%. So it will be a bit more - HDD's and graphics cards are BIG hogs... so it's not the CPU alone. Pentium D's are even worse.

Hey, if/when Nez wins his lawsuit maybe he can buy his own fleet of computers just for SETI! Or better yet, buy SETI a few good servers and give them enough to get their pipeline up the hill for some more bandwidth. :-)

Business/school computers are expected to be used for about 5 years. in actuality they are created to run for 10 years. Running them at 100% doesn't come close to making them fail early. well other than defective parts

I have a computer down right now, I have replaced memory, video and CPU. Funny thing is is that it is one of my machines I brought back from California. Even though I told the girl that used it I wanted it left on she refused and shut it down every day. Starting to think it is MB as it hangs even trying to reinstall windows. I personally believe shutting down and turning on hundreds of times shortened this machines life. This is the most serious crash of any of my computers. Every monitor I have ever had to replace died on restart.

Hint - there was a reason for all those 1-yr warranty's on WD and Maxtor drives being sold in the late 90's up until a few years ago.

Guess some actuaries did their homework.
