Have you guys and girls watched D9? Some threads in here discussed about finding ET. If someday we finally found ET, what would ET looks like in your mind? Could it be just like D9? Do we ready for them? So far we are so excited for their existence, but do we really really really ready to accept them? I hope this thread does not include commercial advertisement catagory =p |

I saw the movie and thought it was very entertaining to watch. I have no idea what aliens will look like, or if they even exist. I prefer the scientific method of searching first before I draw conclusions. |

I prefer the scientific method of searching first before I draw conclusions. I prefer the scientific method too. But...still sometime our wild imagination give us a bit idea about ET's looks like. And that's why we enjoy Star Trek or Alien Nations even The X-Files =) And of course the scientific evidence needed to prove their existence |

The Story line in the movie was okay. The Special Effects were top notch. LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

The Story line in the movie was okay. The Special Effects were top notch. The special effects were visually great, but I found the movie to be brutal. ... not the sheer amount of violence, but the way it took the "message" (and I wish they'd picked just one) and tried to beat them into my skull. Sure, there is the whole racism angle, which would have made a good story. Then there is man's inhumanity toward other men. Okay, good point. Then there is a whole story line around the "security company" and how they're all about money over everything else. There was a whole story about loyalty and betrayal -- or maybe even two or three of those. I mean seriously, any one of these is worthy of a film, but pick one and only one. ... and don't beat it into my brain until I feel like I'm being punished. By the end of the movie, I no longer cared what happened to any of the characters. I won't be picking this one up when it comes out on DVD. |

Personally, I like a movie that can fit a few good sub-plots into the film, but I do think the characters were tad too flat by the end and I didn't really care for any of them. |

But that's it, they had a decent sub-plot -- in fact, they had a couple pretty good ones. I like that. They just had way too many main plots. |

Generally, this film raised issues of racial discrimination. Director wanted to illustrate that racial problems do not only occur between the members of homo sapiens but also can occur in another thinking creatures like ourselves (I borrowed 'thinking creatures' term from the nature journal *grin*). That is why I always say "Do we really ready for them?" to all my friends who are interested in the search for ET. We do not just interested in finding it, but morally we must be ready to live side by side with another thinking creatures too. Why I questioned about this? Because the nature of homo sapiens is always want to dominate among others. But some said that the director wants to describe implicitly about what had happened in South Africa (coincidence Neill Blomkamp is a South African born). So that is why the another thinking creatur's spaceship fly kites above Johannesburg. |

Oh, the racial undertones where quite obvious. So obvious that you can barely call them "undertones". What I found most ironic is the fact that all the Africans whom had black skin (please forgive my lack of politically correct words, I tried my best) were just as racist toward the aliens than anyone else. You'd think that after all they've been through, they wouldn't want to treat anyone as horrible as they were/are treated. I also found it interesting that the corrupted gangsters taking advantage of the aliens were of the darker skin set, which simply feeds the stereo-type that they are lawless, corrupt people. Why weren't there any white gangsters, even if in a separate, competing gang to abuse and take advantage of the aliens? |

I also found it interesting that the corrupted gangsters taking advantage of the aliens were of the darker skin set, which simply feeds the stereo-type that they are lawless, corrupt people. The film said the gangsters were "Nigerians." Something else I found to be quite heavy-handed. |

Oh yeah. Right now I'm corresponding with several Nigerians who are very close to sending me millions of dollars. They seem like real nice folk. |

Oh, the racial undertones where quite obvious. So obvious that you can barely call them "undertones". Race? I thought it was more a comment on, and our treatment of, refugees, of which the world has about 62 million. As for the Nigerians thing, I tend to think that was an "in-joke" to African viewers. It seems that every continent has its most hated nation, Europe has Britain, South America has Argentina, and Africa has Nigeria, I guess the world has the U.S. I suspect that in an African cinema outside of Nigeria, the first time the Nigerians appeared there'd be plenty of laughter. I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ... |
