I have installed 4.12 on 3 seperate machines that were running 4.05 and 4.09 fine.
I stop the client...Install the new software...Restart the client.
It goes through it's 'Benchmarking' and then hangs - with a No Response.
Looking at the Process Manager shows the GUI is using between 50 and 100 percent of the processor alone - not the seti client but the gui. Trying to stop it gets an MS error reporting screen.
Reboots don't help, re-install don't help.

And completely replicable on any machine I try to use.

Anyone else getting this problem?
Have you found a work around?

Hello
I just downloaded the public release of 4.12 over top of my 4.09 and it worked.I have Windows Xp Pro Service pack 2 and pentuim 4 processors with ht.It downloaded and I started it up and done benchmarks and carried on fine.Did you download from public release site on here?I did read in another post that when you start it it may be best to be offline first so it does not hang.

I have downloaded it from here - then I have re-downloaded it in case my first copy was corrupted, and re-installed - with the same thing.

All nice p4's - one with HT and two without and still the same.

I have even tried the old - unintall, reboot, re-install, reboot and it still hangs.

I'll keep trying things...

I have exactly the same problem on my W2K machine. No work around other than re-installing 4.05 or 4.09 and watching the "failed upload error" messages. What ever happened to testing before issuing?

Patience is a virtue, but Seti/Boinc are seriously trying it.

I did read dial up may cause the hang when you first start it.Try starting it offline and see what happens.

All AMD cpus here. Some will install and run ok. Others lock up just as you described. Now to figure out the differences between the working and non-working machines.

Yes - tried 4.12 on 2 boxes. First was fine, second just as you describe.

I installed Boinc 4.12 without a glitch and it is running great for at least 24 hours now. AMD 2500+ and Win98se. I'm also attached to three projects with no problems. Uploads and downloads for all my projects are working.

98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.

Strange behavior with version 4.12

Windows 2000 Server with SP4
boinc_gui.exe takes up between 60 and 97% of the CPU time and setiathome_4.05 backs off and takes what's left of the CPU time.
The GUI pops up normally but I can't use it since it freezes directly. The only way to terminate is to use the Task Manager and kill the process.

Windows XP PRO with SP2
Similar situation appears here as well. I do have a BOINC GUI Error popping up, telling me "Failed to cleanup the Windows Sockets Interface"

Both my test clients, as above, fails using version 4.12. When I re-install 4.09 I can continue my crunching. :-)

Now i have tried this below...

Putting back 4.09 and all works fine.
If I stop network connectivity I still get the same problem.

Even putting on 4.09 - stopping network activity - and then re-installing 4.12 without network activity running does not work. During the 'benchmarking' I reset the network connectivity to off, and when the benchmarks fininshed, the gui hung using up between 50 and 100 percent of the CPU

I get the problem with XP SP2 firewall on and off.

I run a permanent 10Mb fibre connection and access internet through a squid proxy...firewalling is not the issue and internet connectivity is not the issue.

It seems the only fix is to go back to 4.09 and run with it - it works fine...

I have the new release version installed on two of my XP OS systems and it is running without any problems all day.

My third system is a different story. It is XP SP2 also, just like the other two but the gui hangs every time. I have installed over v4.09 and tried a fresh install but will hang no matter. The gui shows using 50% and the 2 processes of 4.05 are using about 25% each. The v4.09 gui shows 0% with the 2 processes using 50% each just like it should.

Add another ME TOO - kinda

I've upgraded 4.09 to 4.12 on a couple of win98se boxes and several W2K Pro boxes with aboslutelyh no problems, but both NT4SP6a boxes exhibit exactly this behavior. After Killing BOINC thru the task manager, and reverting to 4.09. every in-flight work unit on both boxes restarted from scratch - including one CPDN WU that had been crunching for 6 weeks.

4.12 acts crazy. I had uninstall it and go back to .09. works fine. So better carry on with 09 till .12 is officially released.

I tried 4.12 when it was alpha code. It wouldn't install on either my Intel or my AMD machine without locking up. Back to 4.09.

Now BOINC decides to do a general release of 4.12. (Can it be presumed to be beta now?) Unfortunately, this version is no different than the alpha code of the same revision. On both my Intel and my AMD machine with XP Pro-SP2 installed, the BOINC client locks up immediately after install.

After trying unsuccessfully for some time to get 4.12 to work properly, I went back to 4.09. Unfortunately I'm still suffering from the server refusing WU's every now and then. Even that is better than not working at all.

I'm very disappointed.
