Since May '99

Yep...still crunching after all these years with a break for a divorce, several jobs, a career change or two (or three), a new house or two, six or eleven computers, god knows how many versions of SETI BOINC and a sojourn in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Many things have changed but the effort continues.

From the beginning I've thought this would be at least a generation-long project with a small chance of success.

Determination and Patience Crunchers! There are certainly more silly things we can do with the electrons passing by.

In my estimation, our desire for instant results is childish. The Universe doesn't work on our time scale and we are most certainly not at the center of it. Our lives and this effort are a brief spark in that starry sky. If we are going to make the effort we must realize it may take a very long time (in human terms) and it seems likely none of us participating now will ever know the result.
But we are the better for the trying.

I'll soon be 63. My second ten years starts on May 20. I (think I) remember how I first got started. I'm not sure that I am recalling correctly but I seem to remember that in late 1998 I read about SETI@home getting up and going. Unfortunately, it required a Windows/Intel machine and I was using Macs. Then (if memory serves) in very early 1999 it became available for Macs but required a newer version of the operating system than I had on my machines (System 7.5 maybe). I got the requisite System not long after but then I found that it was only for Power Mac processors and all I had was 68x00 (mostly on LC III's then). I got my first iMac (a 333MHz blueberry) in May and started up as soon as I could.

Does any of this ring a bell with anyone? This does not seem to quite square with the Wikipedia article but it might fit in with the alpha and beta releases. Any light that can be shed on this would be appreciated. I am quite curious about the early days of SETI. I asked about this previously (in another thread) but did not get any answers at the time. I'm hoping that the big event will trigger some other people's memories.

Next Tuesday marks my 10 years.

I remember seeing a feature about seti@home on the BBC science program, Tomorrows World, where they showed the screen saver in action which of course looked very "cool" back then.

Recently I had a bit of an attack of guilt at the electricity I was using to look for "ET" so I moved most of my machines to WCG, well I am moving them all back for the 10th Birthday, lets chase that 3 mil LOL!

According to the "official" stats I've been crunching since 3 Apr 1999, but there were at least 2 database/server crashes that wiped out all the user information of those of us that were "betaing",(alphaing?),before "official" release.
I am pretty sure I was getting test WU's as early or earlier as Sept. '98.
Any one else remember this?
