Message 889221 - Posted: 28 Apr 2009, 16:08:57 UTC

Came across a strange one in my list. WU is:
ap_01mr09ah_B3_P0_00256_20090424_29818.wu

Computer 4884559, and example suspect result WU 436487509. The latter result "completed" in 2037.16 seconds, claimed credit 1.99 ......

It alledges to be a "GenuineIntel Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz", which, in crunching an AP in that cpu time frame appears on the face of it to be re-writing the laws of physics with a cpu speed of 785.71 million ops/sec :)

Looking at the rest of the computer "completed" WUs - they are all 5 or less claimed credits.

The computer itself has Total Credit zero, Average Credit zero, turn round time zero

Looks a little smelly, and would bare a closer look to see if my suspicions are right.

Regards
Zy

It's likely that someoen grossly OCed a PC or the PC is damaged in some way that is causing it to report these results. Can you provide a link to the user's PC

He's been at it for a while already (19th of March) and all with "Found 30 single pulses and 30 repeating pulses, exiting." in stderr.txt .. smells like a script doing things to his tasks.

How about this one? He cost me at least 2 WUs of credit:

here

Strange - completed and validated, but claimed (and granted) credit of zero.

Also result_overflow on S@H Enhanced work, WU 431913053 for instance. Neglect attracts dust bunnies is my guess.

Check this one out...

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=4511481

1100 AP's with a core duo...no wonder we have no work available....something wrong here me thinks. This rig returned 2 completed WU's today and received 43 new ones.

Any of the Seti gurus have an answer for this one.

Strange one. The actual work seems fine - stock app, taking a bit over three days, being returned after a bit more over three days - if that was all we saw, it would be unremarkable.

But in between it keeps asking for, and getting, a new WU every few minutes. BOINC seems to be ignoring those allocations, and coming back for more.

Anyone remember whether BOINC v6.2.14 for Windows was known for "Oliver Twist" tendencies?

So from what I see May 9 and 10th will toss like 100 Wu's as being timed out back into re-issue...with a lot more to follow every few days..

I have sent him a PM...we shall see what happens

My guess is ghosts caused by some unreliable communication link. If the host knew about those tasks it wouldn't be asking for more. So the Scheduler thinks they have been "sent" but the host hasn't gotten those sched_reply messages and asks for more work.

The present form of the BOINC option (resend lost work) which would fix the situation imposes far too much database load for this project. When I suggested a change which would probably make it practical about a year ago, David Anderson wasn't receptive. In the long run these cases don't cause too much harm unless there are so many they threaten to overload server storage space with WUs which must be kept available for the eventual reissues.
