Can someone explain this please, I do not know what ACPI's are. The time before I used speedfan it was around 17C the last time around 21C now it is 24.5C. Could it be because of the weather, I know it is not 'dust bunnies' as I cleaned it out this morning and there was little dust. If this is in the wrong section can it be moved please? Hoping to hear some answers.

ACPI = Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
I don't know a lot about the specifics, but this is the system that does power management. I believe that ACPI sensors are on the motherboard and can vary depending on motherboard manufacturer. If nothing else has changed (ie. same computing load, system isn't accumulating cat hair balls), and the ambient temps have gone up, then I'd say it's pretty reasonable to attribute the temp rise to the rise in ambient temps. Has the temp in the room the system is in been going up lately?

Yes it has, think I can smell smoke but cannot see it. Seems to be certain times of the year when this happens. That is why I clean it, searched the machine and could see little dust so I vacummed what I saw, lightly of course. Wonder if it is just dust particles

If it's dust, you should be able to get a lot of it by blowing the system out with compressed air. A few times a year, I take my systems outside and open them up, then blow them out. But if your room has gone up the 7 degrees or so, then that's probably all it is.

Madmac is using Speedfan which I don't use, I like RealTemp but that's only for Core processors, you could use it on your Imac. Both of these have nothing to do with Seti or Boinc, so the app you're using doesn't matter, just what kind of system it is.

I use Everest myself, and noticed when I did my Opteron2210->2222SE upgrade, the individual core temps are alarmingly high, but the CPU0/1 temps that are reported in BIOS seem to be correct. From what I have gathered, the CPU0/1 temps are more trustworthy than the Core0/1 temps.

Also, there was a BIOS update I did a while back that fixed the reporting of the chipset temp. There was a glitch in the BIOS that added 20C to the reported temp when it reached 60, so it went 58 59 80 81..

On the same rig, when I use speedfan, I don't know which device ACPI is reporting a temp for, but it didn't match anything that was in Everest.

Don't use any Macs myself, maybe someone who does can comment on a program to look at temps that would work?

smcFanControl is what I use on my iMac.

It shows what the some of the temps are and allows me to control the fan speeds.

iStat Pro gives you a widget that will show all of the temp sensors on the iMac.

I downloaded both of those programs, and when i got my first look at my temps i was amazed how hot they were. My cpu was 78 C. HD was in the high 60s C. and heat sink was right up there also. I increased my fans speed and right now cpu is running 58 C.. I have an intell dual core and im wondering what should be the normal temp. range ?

Which processor do you have, exactly? I'm guessing the T7700 or T8300?
The thermal spec for those are 100 & 105. 78 is pretty high for 24/7, but 58 is reasonable.

From his computer page.

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8135 @ 2.40GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6]

My iMac usually runs around 50C, I have the CPU fan at 3745 RPM's.

Hm, can't find the E8135 in the Intel processor finder, closest I see is the 8190, but I hope that's not too close as the TDP is closer to 60... so 78 seems really high!

Well what a dolt I am. Never thought to look at my comp page.
I did some further adjustments on my fan speeds and now have the cpu temp at 52 C.
fan speed is 1990 rpm.
heat sink is 42 C. at 1483 rpm.
all other temps are iin the 40 C range.
Do you guys think i need to tweak the fan speed more?

Ill have to go reread the post and find out what i need for my Old P4.

Thanks for all your help and tips.
