I have a AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor. The Boinc Manager keeps saying that it is limiting CPU to 2 cpu's. My online preferences state 4. I have posted the BOINC log below. What gives?

Head to your personal page and click on your computing preferences. make sure you have the max number of CPU to 4

What does your override file say regarding "use % of CPUs"? This can be found from Manager > Advanced > Preferences > CPU tab.

Should be "Use at most 100% of the processors" and "Use at most 100% of CPU time".

If you are using online Prefs, go to Advanced > Preferences > Press Clear.
Should remove your override file.

Thanks to all.

Clearing the override file got me back to 3 CPU's and changing my preferences from 80% to 100% got it back to using 4 CPU's. Thank you to all who assisted.

I did have to knock the "Use at most" option to 45% to avoid overheating the CPU and having the temperature exceed the manufacture specifications.

Sounds like you're using the stock cpu cooler. I had that problem on my 9950, so switched to a 3rd party cooler, now running at 100% with no problems.

You could download CPU-Z and check your processor/core temperatures. Anything above about 65C (but this might vary- check the specs) is probably too hot. When one of my Pentium Ds got to above about 80C it would slow down to 1/3 normal calculation speed, probably to protect itself.

for ease of use just use Speedfan to check your temps

I apologize in advance for resurrecting this thread but I'm having the same problem the originator had. IE: - I have a quad core cpu but all cores are not being used...only 2 plus the gpu. I have set my preferencs as follows:

In Computing Pref - >Proc usage

On multiprocessors - 5 processors

On multiprocessors - 100%

Use at most - 100%

Under Advanced - > Preferences - > Processor usage

On Multi... - > 100% of the processors

Use at most - > 100% of cpu time
(tried clearing and resetting to no avail)

Checked BOINC file and found cc_config.xml is set at 5

What have I overlooked or done wrong??

(I'm using an opt apps)

- <cc_config>
- <options>
<ncpus>5</ncpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

I have tried to edit the above using notepad but when I put the edited file back it just comes up as above!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When using notepad You need to save as all and use Quote marks(") around Your file name, Otherwise It could end up as a disguised text file.

Or as I noticed.. those hyphens on the first two lines. I don't think those are supposed to be there.

As suggested I've tried to save the file cc_config edited in notepad as "cc_config" and also as "cc_config.xml" but it still comes up as

- <cc_config>
- <options>
<ncpus>5</ncpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

Have also run CPU benchmarks and still getting this message

I'm feeling like the world's biggest moron!!! Can't get all 4 cores working...Task Manager shows only 2 instances of boinic both at 25%
plus the GPU for a total cpu usage of 54%. This old geezers abilities in programming is the equivalent of the square root of zero.

If I reset the project will I lose everything in the cache? Will a reset even help? Or should I delete Boinc and all optimized apps and reload?(of course I would only take this drastic action only after I have run the present cache dry)

Joker, he has it set to 5 because he is also running a CUDA card.

Just for grins, have you checked on your SETI Account page, under computing preferences to see if you have the number of CPUs set to 5 there too? I'm not sure if that will override your cc_config file or not but it's worth a try.

If, as you say, you want to get 4 processors working then you don't need the cc_config file at all. So let's get rid of that variable by deleting it entirely and then try to find the *real* cause of your problem.

You can view/manage the local preferences (in the override file) from the Advanced menu in the manager's Advanced view. If you didn't intend to set any local preferences, click 'Clear' and revert to global (web-managed) settings.

If you intended to set a local preference, remember that everything visible in the Preferences dialog (all three tabs) gets saved and applied. Check every entry: in particular, note that there may be two entries for the number of CPUs to use - 'Use at most [n] CPUs' and 'Use at most [f%] of available CPUs'. You want n=4, and f=100%, on that page.

(Wording won't be exact - I'm not in front of a v6 manager to copy - but I hope that gives you the gist).

Now ncpus value required to be NUMBER_OF_LOGICAL_PROCESSORS+NUMBER_OF_GPUs for host.
For example, for Quad with 2 CUDA-enabled GPUs it should be 6
Here is example of minimal cc_config.xml file you need
<cc_config>
<options>
<ncpus>NUMBER_OF_LOGICAL_PROCESSORS+NUMBER_OF_GPUs</ncpus>
</options>
</cc_config>
File should be placed in boinc data directory (the one that contains projects subdirectory).
This from Raistmer about the cc_config file.
