Seeing that there is a glaring lack of metal on here, aside from the one post I previously entered, I'll add another one of my favorite bands to this ongoing list.

Meshuggah

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meshuggah

I remember having a discussion in college back in 99 with an old dorm buddy about music. He brought up the fact that he liked Tool because of their complex music, which brought forth a chuckle from me. Inquiring about the laughter, my friend asked what it was all about and I told him that he needed to broaden his horizons if he believes that Tool is complex. He then proceeded to play me a few Tool tracks I had already heard before and I sat through it to appease him. Upon completion of the tracks, he then turned to me and questioned how I can find Tool to be juvenile in terms of complexity and that was when I played him the track below:

I explained to him that this was a progressive metal band called Meshuggah whose complex polyrthythmic writing was legendary. Since he had been playing guitar for quite some time, I asked him to listen to the track and attempt to figure out the picking pattern, which he brutally failed at. I asked him to pound out the drum rhythm on the desk, couldn't do that either. Then I told him that this is one of their more straight forward and simpler songs...

Here are a few more tracks by Meshuggah:

Been fighting with my long-distance boyfriend.

Always a good time to centre things with some Bach.

Google the name and this is the piece you always come up with, so who am I to argue with popularity.

Toccata & Fugue in D Minor

PS. A long piece but worth the listen. Everything from Metallica to Johnson, Oldfield to Bif Naked is in there. And written about 300 years ago. Pretty good for an old, dead dude.

Since there has been over 800 views so far on this thread, and nobody has bothered to mention them, I'll go ahead and throw them out there...

Dream Theater

If there ever was a band that had a genius at each of it's musician's respective instruments, that band would be Dream Theater. Their core (bassist, drummer and guitarist) all met at Berklee College of Music and have been making some of the best progressive rock/metal since.

-Mike Portnoy, Drums: Mike is easily one of the best drummers alive and the best for sure in rock. Peart fans hate hearing this but it's true...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBnK7fC4yj0

-John Petrucci, Guitar: John is a virtuoso unmatched by many. Good enough to make it onto the G3 tour, John's ability to pick just about every note in a solo (rather than relying on a legato style hammer on/pull off attack, ala Satriani) is right up there with someone like Paul Gilbert.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8pUqln36po

-John Myung, Bass: Myung plays bass with such accuracy and speed that you'd think he has Buckhead sized fingers, but no, regular fingers in the realm of bassists. For some of his stuff, I wind up having to pick my 6 string bass as I cannot move my digits that fast.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVJ2zbGmMAI

-Jordan Rudess, Keyboard: Asinine speed, limitless knowledge and great theory application. Jordan can get a bit nuts if you let him, as shown in the middle of "Dark Eternal Night" when Dream Theater breaks into a silent movie score, but you gotta take the good with the bad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQF0oervpoU (no, Jordan doesn't always play with a Keytar, I just get a kick out of seeing him do it)

Examples of their music:

Oh yeah. There is a lot of learned talk around about whether or not Bach actually wrote this, but who cares? If Larry the Cable Guy wrote it I would still love it. This is another one best played REALLY LOUD.

I put that debate in the same category as the Shakespeare vs Bacon question. (Or, for that matter, Einstein or Mrs. Einstein?). It sells a lot of books.

It’s mostly about this. imho

But ya have to play it on good equipment. I have always held a casual interest in classical music, but a friend who was a true audiophile made me realize just how much difference the equipment can make using this composition as one of his samples. Just unbelievable. And this is one of those that I can play on my equipment (that he helped me select) at normal volume levels which will cause the drop ceiling in my basement to rattle.

Good headphones can truly be addictive. For "normal" speakers, for years I have loved live classical music with large ensembles, but never enjoyed it as much recorded. I tended towards solo performances and smaller groups, like string quartets and Cream ;).

Recent readings in Stereophile make me think this is based on the limitations of my playback equipment. According to this mag, unless I drop about $100K on a stereo system, large classical orchestras will never sound good.

Note to self - buy another lottery ticket....

Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun

Now that was one on grandpas 45 jukebox in the basement. Whenever we kids were over, that song got played incessantly.

Almost as much as Chuck Berry - My ding-a-ling

And then there was Cher - Gypsys Tramps & Thieves

All perfect material for 7-8 year olds back then. :-)
