We can talk about literature or science or mathematics but, really,, Music is what elevates us above the animals. I love all types of real Music, Reggie to hip-hop. Jazz to classical, country or rock, metal or pop. Whatever. So long as it is real Music Please do not just randomly post stuff you happen to like at the moment, but tell us why think that the rest of us should listen to your suggestion. I can’t speak for others but, as a musician and a “wanna-be†composer, a simple link is not enough temptation to get me to listen, Tell me why I should spend minutes of my life listening to your suggestion. I am not always going to have a reasoned treatise as to why you should listen to my suggestions, especially when I post the occasional “pop-candy†piece, but a random link doesn’t grab my attention without some background as to why I should care. It doesn’t have to be cerebral, but it does have to have an explanation as to why it is “real†to you. I will start this thread off with: The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony There was some controversy over the “hook†with this song (the infamous first 4 bars written in 4/4ths time) because of similarity to the Rolling Stones “The Last Time.†Personally, I prefer Ashcroft’s very high-road (and having once met him, I appreciate his tongue-in-cheek sentiment) comment “This is the best song Jagger and Richards have written in 20 years.†Especially ironic since a variation of this particular ditty was composed by one JS Bach about 170 years ago (different time signature, and a vastly different era, but I leave that for the gentle listener to puzzle out. LOL.) I like this song because the lyrics themselves are very much where I am in my little life at the moment. I want to hear your real Music. [edit] And, as with all Real Music, headphones on, volume set to high! The only way Real Music works is if you submerge yourself in it. [/edit] Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

I like many kinds of music, but I especially like Gaelic music. One example of which is the album "The Road North" by Machlis and Fraser. With a last name of MacKenzie, your ancestors came from only slightly farther north in Scotland than mine did. ![]() ![]() BOINC WIKI |

This should be quite an interesting thread. I find that the older I get the more accepting I am of a wider variety of music, stuff that I used to consider "uncool" or "old people's stuff". I look forward to hearing what everyone is listening to and why. I also find that music gives me a chance to relate to my kids on many different levels, as we learn from each other. What my kids taught me: my daughter went to see Coldplay in Toronto several years ago, and was very impressed. I listened to them, and they have their moments. My son, after listening to my daughter go on and on, suggested she might like Radiohead. "What are they like?" asks my daughter. "Just like Coldplay, expect they don't suck", says my teenage son. I think I see some of what he meant too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nTFjVm9sTQ What I hope I'm teaching my kids: both are beginning to appreciate classical music, at a younger age than I did. I fell in love with Bach while trying to learn classic guitar in my university days. Many years later, I discovered that almost all the Bach guitar music I had been listening to were recent transcriptions, as most of it was originally written for other solo instruments like cello and violin. It was like discovering a whole new Baroque master as I began to dig up the original versions. I though this was the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0QqHzF9X9w&feature=related but it was really this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ83EBKH598 And of course, some people still think this is the original:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2RNe2jwHE0 ![]() ![]() |

Jeez, a few bands come to mind, and I may add them later, but if I had to choose which band to highlight in my music collection, it would be Opeth. Extremely advanced song writing using timing changes, polymetric/polyrhythmic phrases and diverse approaches regarding the schematic of their creations, Opeth embodies a model that is not only very unique but quite prevalent that they are work-o-holics when it comes to fine tuning their craft. A few examples of their music: In My Time of Need http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x6YclsLHN0 Silhouette (piano solo)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3WayEBr9-M Ghost of Perdition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsFZPM3h34c Soldier of Fortune (Deep Purple cover) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3n3xhXZ5Fc |

I think it was just Greg Lake improvisation in D, but i tabbed it. WOW. Thanks everyone, great stuff. A lot more diverse and interesting that I was expecting. :) @ guido.man Think about it: had Mama Cass given Karen Carpenter a sandwich, two lives would have been saved. (Yes, I know, a sick, sick joke.) :P @ Richard: Though a something of a ‘puritan’ I prefer TAB for guitar over standard notation. As you know, there can be (depending on the instrument) as many as 5 different strings used to play the same note. With vastly different sounds. Tab fixes that problem admirably. For most other instruments, tho. . . :| @ JM7: Actually, my first name is Mackenzie, but named after my very Scottish mom’s maiden name. @ Bill Walker: As you and I already secretly know: pretty much all western music for the last 300 years has been based on Bach, one way or another. An interesting thing about Segovia: he almost never played a guitar that was in proper (absolute) tune. Always in tune with itself, of course, but usually a third of a tick off. Still, can’t really argue with the results. Andres Segovia - The Song of the Guitar Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

I've always been a fan of the power trio, from Cream to Wolfmother. Here's Grand Funk Railroad at their peak. IMHO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGZTikKCJvg |

I've always been a fan of the power trio, from Cream to Wolfmother. Oh, stupid me. I never thought of Johnny Winter. Possibly Edgar is more well known because of Frankenstein, Johnny is probably the better musician with his mastery of the blues guitar. Edgar is arguably a more innovative composer. Both brilliant, tho. [edit] As I watch it, hardly any of the notes in the video of Frankenstein actually match up with the music. Early efforts at musical 'lip-sync'. :o~~[/edit] Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

JeezLouise I gave the wrong link Oh well, Johnny's always good too. Just think of this as a bonus song. This should be Grand Funk Railroad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x6chChxzV0 I've been sending links to a friend at work who has a radio program at the university radio station. I suppose I should delete them all now to end the possibility of further confusions on my part. CFUR is located on the campus of The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) His show is called Air Guitar. Programing can be listened to online at this link. http://www.cfur.ca/ |

I sort of figured that there had been some sort of mix-up. To be honest, I personally prefer the Winter brothers to Grand Funk Railroad anyway. As I may have (arrogantly) indicated earlier most everything in the past few hundred years is derivative of what came before. GFR more than many in that regard. Not that this is a bad thing! But I just prefer a more original slant on things. :o) Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

I'll admit GFR is an aquired taste for many. In keeping with the original theme of this thread, I'd like to offer something that elevates the soul and depicts our species at it's best. I love this piece http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohXI3po8hK0 |
