One final thing to check..............

This intel page lists a minimum bios version of 1148 for the Skulltrail and your cpu's. Did you check the bios version?

Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....Boinc....

OK RQ2000 I have left myself subscribed to this thread and so I can just hope that someone with a Skulltrail notices it and helps me out.
I am however much relieved to find that it is possible to run 8 cores on the Skulltrail for boinc as that is the main reason I bought the pc parts and built it.
It also cost a lot of dosh to do it and I would be well p***ed off it I had misplanned the build so badly.
Thanks for your help also and thanks to Ageless as well.

I shall wait and see who else notices my problem.

You MIGHT want to either do a SEARCH for Skulltrail or ASK someone to CHANGE the TITLE of the THREAD to SKULLTRAIL so others KNOW That is what you need. IT isnt really OBVIOUS as there are OTHER options to get 8 cores just most use server boards... I DO understand it was a CONSIDERABLE amount of cash you spent on it. By any chance have you MADE certain the second CPU was really SEATED in the slot well.. I can imagine that you HAVE been through that step but sometimes we overlook the obvious. As for the OS, VISTA ULTIMATE is capable of recognizing it as well so that is not the problem either...

Yes it is definately seated properly. I shall start a new thread called Skulltrail 8 core help required and post a link to this first thread within it as I don't know how to change the title and I shall also do a search for skulltrail too. thanks again RQ2000. BTW where did you get that name from, is it a robot in some old sci fi movie?

Well What is the DATE on your BIOS the latest version can be found here You cant actually CHANGE the title here but you can REQUEST that it be changed by the mods. I'm am still searching for other possible answers to your issue.. I have found one other person with a SIMILAR problem but their issue was OS not supporting it. Vista should from the begining though. I am curious about the MEMORY though. I would EXPECT this to be an issue since it IS in fact working but Skulltrail platforms usually use a DIFFERENT type of memory FB-DIMMs quad channel instead of DDR2. As for my id I have used that as my screen name for over 15 years.. part based on my initials but not a sci-fi robot from years past,FUNNY THOUGH.. ;)

I would rather leave the bios alone if I can as the last time I updated it the pc wouldn't boot at all and I had a hell of a job getting it to take the original bios back.
Using System Information for Windows the Bios is reported as being 18th Feb 2008.

The memory is FB-DIMMs and DDR2, link to it below where I bought it from.
The link does work as I just checked it.

2GB Corsair DDR2 PC2-6400 (800MHz), 240 Pin, ECC Fully buffered, CAS 5-5-5-15, Lifetime Warranty

I understand what you mean.. there have been LOTS of bios updates since then though.. as for the memory I was trying to make sure.. I dont own a SKULLTRAIL just trying to help you out really.. and had seen others talking about it in various forums..I was unaware any of the 800 MHZ ram would work from what I saw.. again just trying to be helpful.. you might want to post something on INTELs boards though as it REALLY isnt a BOINC problem with the cores...I understand that can be a nightmare too though ALL TO WELL..

Yes I have found it to be a problem in the past but it has been working fine now for at least 6 months. Though now I have said that I have probably jinxed it lol.

I appreciate any help I can get on this, thanks again for trying. I'm beginning to think I need an expert though as I can't locate much help on google though that may be because google has so much information in it that it's hard to pin down what you actually want without getting 2 million other things thrown in.

I didn't see anything about your mobo drivers. I've seen problems from Mobos not seeing devices because drivers weren't installed or the install failed. Just a thought

Perhaps it's in this bit...

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=51183

It was suggested I get the name changed on this thread but I didn't know how to do that so started another with a title more likely to be noticed by Skulltrail users. If anyone else wishes to add to this thread please post it in the thread called Skulltrail 8 Core Help Required, instead of in here. Maybe a mod can sling all this into that thread too? I don't know if that's possible.

Well after all my searching for a solution online and trying to understand the BCDEdit.exe program from the Command Line (which I have hardly ever had to use in the past) I finally found a solution to the problem.
It turned out to be an extremely embarasing thing that I hadn't done correctly when I tried to use the program VistaBootPRO 3.2 in order to get some kind of GUI interface to do the work for me to the BCDEdit.exe thing.
On the Advanced BCD Registry Settings tab there is a blank Selection Box on the lower part of the window where your supposed to "Select the Windows Vista or Longhorn entry from the list below to begin."
Not having noticed those words the first, second or even third time I opened the program I had neglected to actually choose my OS that I wanted the VistaBootPRO to fix and so looking all over the program didn't actually produce any useful information.
Finally after involving hundreds of people on the Seti site and a few dozen more on a couple of other forums I opened the program for the fourth time and notice my error.
Choosing the option "Microsoft Windows Vista" from the drop down menu instantly changed the details below the choice and showed me that the "CPU and Memory Options" had a tick in the "Limit CPU's" option and was set to "4".
I could have shot myself for being so stupid as to not have noticed it yesterday when I downloaded and installed the program.
I then took the tick out of the "Limit CPU's" option and rebooted and hey presto instant access to all 8 CPU's.

I would like to thank all the people on the Seti site who did most of the work in fixing this problem by suggesting things that might have been causing the issue. I certainly would never have figured it out from the available help on Google as there was so much there that putting in any kind of search for this gave so many other possible things that it was nearly impossible to find anything useful.
I shall post this on the other couple of forums I used too in order to help anyone else that finds themselves in this situation.
Once again thanks to everyone concerned for all your help. I bow to your superior wisdom.
A very relieved BorgVampire
