Upgraded to 6.4.5 but not seeing any improvement

12/24/2008 5:32:01 PM||CUDA devices found 12/24/2008 5:32:01 PM||Coprocessor: GeForce 8800 GT (1) 12/24/2008 5:32:01 PM||Version change (6.2.19 -> 6.4.5) I have upgraded to 6.4.5, and it finds the CUDA Coprocessor GeForce 8800, but I am not seeing any improvement. In fact, on December 19, this host's average was almost 1700. Since the upgrade it has dropped to less than 1400. I have heard that the CUDA Coprocessor is supposed to give an improvement in the range of 300% to 1000%. Can anyone tell me what's going on? ID: 845909 ·  |

12/24/2008 5:32:01 PM||CUDA devices found Excluding the new use of CUDA for Nvidia GPU's, BOINC 6.4.5 itself offers no actual improvement in performance, that is up to the use of CUDA and the applications for SETI@home. Give the CUDA app some time... it will kick in eventually, but just to be sure, check if BOINC appears to be harnessing the use of the GPU by checking in the "Tasks" list. If not... tell us. Also, Recently quite a few crunchers have noticed that RAC's have dropped and their pending has increased. Don't worry, you will be awarded your credit eventually and your RAC will rise back to normal levels. The "rumors" about the 300%-1000% increase are possibly exaggerated in most people's cases. It depends on a number of variants, such as how powerful your graphics card is and if you run the Stock Application provided by SETI@home or the Optimized Applications provided by the team at Lunatics. If you do happen to run the Optimized Applications, I doubt you will fully see the 300%-1000% improvement that has been stated. Hope I have helped. - Luke. ID: 845915 · |

My machine with CUDA capability is still running seti-enhanced 5.28. How do I update that so CUDA might kick in? It is enabled on this machine and the drivers have been updated. Memory isn't a problem, my 8800GTS has 640K of RAM.

seti-enhanced 5.28 If I am not mistaken, that is an optimized version. So you'd have to: 1. Set BOINC to No New Tasks and run your cache dry, upload and report all. 2. Exit BOINC completely. 2. Remove the app_info.xml file and optimized executable from the Projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\ 3. Restart BOINC. 4. Open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti->Click Reset project->Acknowledge this. The last step is to make sure that the optimized executable is no longer assigned as main executable in your client_state.xml file. Else BOINC will try to download it from the Seti server. Memory isn't a problem, my 8800GTS has 640K of RAM. You can't use CUDA automatically when you use an optimized enhanced MB application. Check the 'Modified SETI MB CUDA + opt AP package for full ...' thread for information on using CUDA and optimized Astropulse. Using CUDA is not necessarily that much faster than the optimized CPU app. It will depend on the system it is on. I suggest reading the various CUDA threads. Host 3429010 is running Version info: SSSE3x (Intel, Core 2-optimized v8-nographics) V5.13 by Alex Kan The highest version the app_info.xml shows is 528, that's why the tasks show as being done by 5.28. It also means the rather large cache of tasks on the host have all been set to be processed by that version. If you are also doing astropulse work on that host, the best way to convert would be to get Raistmer's latest combined package from: http://lunatics.kwsn.net/gpu-crunching/modified-seti-mb-cuda-opt-ap-package-for-full-gpu-utilize.0.html The app_info.xml should have both 528 and 605 versions listed so your existing work won't be trashed and new work will be shown as 6.05. If you aren't doing astropulse on that host, you'll either need to enable it or make sure the host is also attached to another project to keep the CPUs warm. Joe ID: 846066 · |

Why would I want that? :-) Same with 'k' vs. 'K'. 'k' is kilo (10 to the 3rd). 'K' is the normal prefix in computers, equalling 2 to the 10th power (1024). Ever so slightly more than 'k'. Sorry, that's the engineer in me. Now, back to our regularly schedule discussion... ;-)

How long is eventually, what is the cause of the delay and is there something that I can do to make the delay shorter? RAC takes about 30 days to even out. You have to wait for a number of things, including your wingmen to also finish the task, and there is no way to really speed it up. You'll just have to wait it out patiently. I do not see anything in the "Tasks" list that is different from before except that it is showing a lot of tasks which have Status of "Running, high priority" while they are running. Could you kindly copy all the messages to this thread please. Also, the number of tasks in my queue is getting shorter because Boinc is not requesting any new tasks. Since the upgrade, Boinc shows 108 messages with "Requesting 0 seconds of work". This could be caused by a number of reasons, including:

Since the upgrade, Boinc shows 108 messages with "Requesting 0 seconds of work". 108 seemed to me to be a large number of those messages, so I investigated further. It turns out that only 10 of those messages was followed by "Scheduler request completed", and the rest showed some failure to reach the server. ID: 846088 · |

The use of CUDA has broken work fetch. The DCF (Duration Correction Factor) gets messed up. This will require a total rewrite of the way Boinc keeps track of the cache and work requests. Dr. Anderson has already started looking at how to address the problem of GPU and other resources that projects may want to use. Some kind of open ended algorithm will be need to repair current and future non CPU device use that may effect work fetch and resource share. OK... You are harnessing the power of CUDA & your Graphics Card, which is normal, no problems there. But I'm not sure why you are not connecting to the server successfully, I am. Could someone else please help out? And I also see you are still not requesting tasks. Check in the "Projects" tab if you have BOINC set to "No New Tasks". If you have, unselect it in the Menu on the left hand side. If not, you may not be fetching new tasks because you've set the amount of disk space to something lower than what BOINC & SETI@home needs, check your preferences, and if it is low, change it up. I figured there was some such thing going wrong when all of the running tasks showed "Running, high priority" as if this host would otherwise be unable to finish the task in time, despite the fact that the deadlines were all at least 2 weeks in the future. OK, that has solved why you are not getting new workunits.Yes, but not how to get some new WUs downloaded. Currently there are 50 WUs in the queue and this host completes them at the rate of at least 32 per day. This means that in about a day and a half the queue will be empty.
