My question adressed for multicore system owners who run stock app. Can you run simultaneously stock app on CPU _and_ stock CUDA MB app on GPU ? (Not AP CPU + MB CUDA, but exactly CPU MB + GPU MB ) |

From the CUDA FAQ: Q. Does SETI@home run GPU and CPU versions simultaneously? No. If BOINC determines your CPU is capable of running the CUDA version, only the CUDA version of SETI@home will run. One copy will run on each GPU you have installed. If you want to keep your CPUs occupied at the same time, you can join another BOINC project. (you could've read some of the other threads, you know. ;-)) |

From the CUDA FAQ: Thanks Jord, it's just what I need to know. So, task for merging AK8 CPU and CDA MB GPU will be more hard that it could be if stock already runs both CPU and GPU simultaneously... What my CPU will do when einstein@home come to CUDA too ?? %) |

That is a really dumb move in my mind... So many CPU's may now go idle because the cuda app is running. Think about this for a moment... My 8600GTS takes 3 hours to do a wu (wall clock) my q6600 @ 3.0ghz can do 4 wu's every hour ( 15 min each or less if they are shorties )... Which would you rather have idle??? Not everyone is going to have a high end CUDA device. In fact more are likely to have a slower video card due to the cost of the high end ones. ~Bob Do you Good Search for Seti@Home? http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=888957 Or Good Shop? http://www.goodshop.com/?charityid=888957 |

Absolutely right. GPU worth if it will be CO-processor, not "instead"-processor ;) |

Im wondering if i should abandon AK8 and go stock, because now it doesnt seem like its running any CUDA. Even though i get this message when i fire up boinc client: CUDA Devices found Coprocessor: GeForce 8800 GTS (1) So if i run stock application the cuda would kick in i suppose? |

A batch of 20 cuda WU's takes my Dual 8800gts's under and hour. Its actually a Huge increase over my AMD 9850 BE's crunching ability. My City |

Well, try and see if CUDA will be faster than your AK8 or not. If yes you still can do einstein on CPU for some time.... |

A batch of 20 cuda WU's takes my Dual 8800gts's under and hour. Ok, will see if your RAC will increase or not :) In first approach RAC is effective way to measure (rough) of performance. Better to know wall-time though |

A batch of 20 cuda WU's takes my Dual 8800gts's under and hour. Wall time. Ive been watching, and each back is uploading about an hour or so after downloading depending on the WU's My City |

A batch of 20 cuda WU's takes my Dual 8800gts's under and hour. Those work units are shorties... That would be why they are so fast. Do you Good Search for Seti@Home? http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=888957 Or Good Shop? http://www.goodshop.com/?charityid=888957 |

My q6600 can do 14 of those shorties in an hour. So your 2 GPU's + q6600 = 30 wu/hr for those short wu's (give or take) So it takes 2 GPU's (lower end ones) to beat my CPU. So why waste the extra CPU capacity? Especially if the project is wanting more computing power. ~BoB Do you Good Search for Seti@Home? http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=888957 Or Good Shop? http://www.goodshop.com/?charityid=888957 |

Now im running stock, but still i cant see any cuda application in task manager... :-S Its running app 6.03 atm, while it should be running 6.05 or? Boinc reports CUDA device found. So how come my GPU isnt crunching? |

That is a really dumb move in my mind... So many CPU's may now go idle because the cuda app is running. That's not even the worse that can happen... just imagine all those passively cooled graphics cards and notebooks... I wonder how many of those will get fried and die pretty quick ;) I'm getting a feeling that this whole cuda release was rushed only for the purpose of quickly attracting new users to squeeze some donations out of them... Its hard to believe that the cuda release and the new donation drive happen to be in the same timeframe... Besides that... the whole comparison of CPU vs. GPU , claiming a GPU is 5 to 10X faster, is flawed ! you cannot compare a gpu app that uses a bunch of cores in parallel to process one WU to a CPU app that does one WU on one core serialized... Does CUDA raise your RAC? |

The big problem I have is that if you have a CUDA capable GPU and run SETI from what I understand, you can't prevent it if you have client 6.4.5. The facility to turn it off is coming later according to the CUDA FAQ. I'd have liked to have this functionality from the start in case something went wrong and I wanted to go hack to the CPU version. Looks like I'll be reinstalling 6.2.19 until this is sorted |

Im wondering if i should abandon AK8 and go stock, because now it doesnt seem like its running any CUDA.I have exactly the same problem. I also have a 8800GTS (with 320MB memory) and I don't get a single workunit for my Graphics card. Could it be the same problem as there is with GPUgrid: namely that these cards do support CUDA but not the more recent CUDA with which the application is compiled? |

Well the problem with the 8-series is that some of them will do CUDA and others will not. Yes they have the same model number and specs, but it depends on the version of the core they are using. My 8800GT was bought about six months ago and it is the G92 core, which does CUDA. Apparently 8800GTs that were bought over a year ago (don't know the exact timeline) perform nearly identically when put to work with a game or other means of benchmarking, but are not CUDA-capable.
