Message 833429 - Posted: 23 Nov 2008, 3:21:06 UTC

Hello all and any.
I am a very frustrated BOIC/Seti user.
I started with Seti Classic and moved on to Boinc - my experiences with Boinc however have been forever frustrating moving towards downright annoying.
I can not acquire tasks for some reason.
Every few months, when I get the desire to want to participate with Seti again, I open Boinc and try my darndest to figure out why it won't work.
I even come on here and ask for help - though never with success.
So, here I am, trying again - can any one help?

I suggest you uninstall the one that is presently installed, download the current version & install it.
Attach to Seti & then if it still isn't working, post the messages from the Messages tab here so we can see what is going on.

EDIT- Keep in mind if you run a 3rd party firewall you will need to allow the BOINC manager to communicate with the client & will need to allow them to access the BOINC/Seti servers.

Sure. Which version of BOINC do you have at the moment, still 5.10.45?
Do you still only download the master file and scheduler list and then it stops working? (Referencing your last post 174 days ago).

Before we do anything rigorous, go to your computing preferences, edit them, set Suspend work while computer is in use? to No. The save the changes to the web site (with the option at the bottom of the preferences list).

Please post what your settings are for the Disk and memory usage there. Just to check up on some preferences.

Now then, BOINC 6 has been available for a while.
It's possibly best if you did a complete uninstall of your present BOINC, for as far as it is still on your system. So pass by Add/Remove programs and choose to remove BOINC. This will leave your BOINC directory intact, it'll only delete the executable and dynamic linked library files.

Go to Download BOINC and get 6.2.19, the latest flavour. Watch out as the installer has changed. By default BOINC will be installed as a service. See this FAQ for more information on that and why it was done.

Install BOINC 6.2.19, using the default directories. Don't go changing them about, or try to put the data directory in the same place as your BOINC goes into. This separation is done for a purpose, more about that in the FAQ.

Reboot the computer when asked.
Upon return, open BOINC manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti and click Update. Also, just to be sure, go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences->Clear. This is to make sure you're using the preferences from the web site.

If Seti isn't available, you will need to reattach to it first.
Go BOINC Manager->Tools->Attach to project, select Seti from the drop down list, check the Returning user option and fill in the email address of the account you're posting with and the password of that account. You can double check your email address in your account and also set a new password in case you forgot the last one. Make sure you do this before you try to let your BOINC communicate with the server.

When all this is done, go to the Messages tab and click the Copy all messages button. Post those messages here. Let's see what it does this time around.

I removed the old version last week and re-installed the latest.
I run McAffee v.10 firewall, but allowed Boinc access in McAffee config.
Thanks

Message 833441 - Posted: 23 Nov 2008, 3:46:36 UTC - in response to Message 833440.

I removed the old version last week and re-installed the latest.
I run McAffee v.10 firewall, but allowed Boinc access in McAffee config.

What ports did you allow BOINC on, and what part of BOINC did you tell to use those ports?
It should be boinc.exe that is able to use TCP ports 80 and 443

Sure. Which version of BOINC do you have at the moment, still 5.10.45?
Do you still only download the master file and scheduler list and then it stops working? (Referencing your last post 174 days ago).
I used to select 'download new task' if I remember correctly.
Before we do anything rigorous, go to your computing preferences, edit them, set Suspend work while computer is in use? to No. The save the changes to the web site (with the option at the bottom of the preferences list).
I have this option selected as a default now.

I installed this version last week after a full uninstall.

Install BOINC 6.2.19, using the default directories. Don't go changing them about, or try to put the data directory in the same place as your BOINC goes into. This separation is done for a purpose, more about that in the FAQ.

I don't believe I did anything out of the ordinary . . .

Ok - I just did this . . .

Ok - I just did this . . . and after pc/server communications I got a 'you are now attached to this project'.

When all this is done, go to the Messages tab and click the Copy all messages button. Post those messages here. Let's see what it does this time around.

Message 833449 - Posted: 23 Nov 2008, 3:56:14 UTC - in response to Message 833440.

I removed the old version last week and re-installed the latest.
I run McAffee v.10 firewall, but allowed Boinc access in McAffee config.
Thanks

Thanks

Message 833450 - Posted: 23 Nov 2008, 3:57:24 UTC - in response to Message 833440.
Last modified: 23 Nov 2008, 4:03:19 UTC

I suggest you uninstall the one that is presently installed, download the current version & install it.
Attach to Seti & then if it still isn't working, post the messages from the Messages tab here so we can see what is going on.

EDIT- Keep in mind if you run a 3rd party firewall you will need to allow the BOINC manager to communicate with the client & will need to allow them to access the BOINC/Seti servers.

I removed the old version last week and re-installed the latest.
I run McAffee v.10 firewall, but allowed Boinc access in McAffee config.
Thanks

It appears to me you're still using the preferences in the BOINC Manager rather than the web settings. It also looks like you may need to check in the Boinc Manager under the setting in processor usage under "Computing allowed" and make sure you have a check next to "While computer is in use". Otherwise you need to do what Ageless said earlier:

open BOINC manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti and click Update. Also, just to be sure, go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences->Clear. This is to make sure you're using the preferences from the web site.

and then

go to your computing preferences, edit them, set Suspend work while computer is in use? to No. The save the changes to the web site (with the option at the bottom of the preferences list).

Additionally, it seems you're able to set URLs in your trusted zone in McAffee. Please make sure you set http://setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu as an allowed URL. This is the URL that BOINC uses to contact the Seti scheduler.

Perhaps it's also wise to set http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/ as allowed in the trusted zone.

Message 833457 - Posted: 23 Nov 2008, 4:08:47 UTC - in response to Message 833450.

Thanks

Ok, did you set them on the web or in the BOINC Manager? Also are you clicking on the update button on the Boinc Manager under the Projects tab? I show the last time any of your pc's had contact with Seti was 1 Feb 2008 12:01:45 UTC.

When you click the update button you should get a message in the Boinc Manager log:

11/22/2008 8:16:40 PM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. etc.....

Could you post the log from that point?

I have given Boinc.exe Boincmgr.exe and boincscr.exe acess in McAffee but can't see where (if??) I can add urls . . .

I'm not running McAfee, so all I have to go by is what I read in various forums that my searches give me. It appears thus far that it's the browser one has to set them in, if it's URLs.

But you are able to set trusted IP addresses or ranges in the Mcafee software. If you can find that setting, set IP addresses 208.68.240.16 and 208.68.240.18 as trusted IP addresses.

How are you connecting to the internet?

Another thing, boincscr.exe? I don't know that one. ;-)
the other parts of BOINC are boinctray.exe (this one detects if your mouse and keyboard are in use, for the "in use" option that you just disabled) and boinc.scr (the screen saver part).

By the way, you still best go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced (on the menu at the top of BM)->Preferences->Clear. This will clear out the local preferences that you still use.

I use McAfee (though it's 2008 total protection version) and that should be in the config for the firewall. In my verion it's under Configure>internet and Network> then the Advanced button for the Firewall Protection and in that window under Networks. but I don't think it should be something he would have to do. Once the progam is set to trust Boinc that should be it. If there is more then McAfee should alert him and ask for permission. If it's set as a trusted program, when it tries to connect, if it's not already given permission it will ask.

He could try setting his Security Level to "Automatic" if not already set to that. It could be he has the setting too high. That's also in the same area in my version that I gave the preveious directions for.

Edit:
Please go Windows Start button->Run, type cmd and click OK.
In the command line window that just opened, type:

ping setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu >> c:\ping1.txt

also type:

ping boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu >> c:\ping2.txt

Yep that should tell what's up

I agree with Ageless

By the way, you still best go BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced (on the menu at the top of BM)->Preferences->Clear. This will clear out the local preferences that you still use.

At this point you should only use your computing preferences page to edit the settings, so we can narrow down the problem. Once you've cleared the settings in the Manager go to the preferences page and copy the settings you have there and post them here.

From what the ping shows you are able to contact Seti so it doesn't appear to me as likely it's McAfee preventing you from gettng work and still seems more likely to be the settings.

Or if you want us to compare things, post the contents of your global_prefs.xml and global_prefs_override.xml files. You will only have the global_prefs_override.xml file when you are using the local preferences.

These files can be found in your BOINC Data directory, at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC

You can open them with Notepad, or any browser.
