Who's brilliant idea was it to embed google-analytics onto the site?

This is a known performance killing 'tool' on websites, and in addition I take offense to having a google profiling tool monitoring my participation here, especially since AFAIK it was unannounced.

I have it listed as untrusted via NoScript, so there is not problems on my end.

I have been having problems with threads not loading all the way and most of the blocks seem to be coming from the various stats sites for some reason.

I'm seeing that as well. Reload sometimes clears it. Something appears to be terribly broken.

So I guess this is why I am seeing an incomplete page download on about every 3rd or 4th page. Waiting sometimes over a minute. I have to hit refresh and the page loads immediately. Been waiting for someone to mention this problem just to see if I was the only one being affected.

Google is beginning to scare me just a little, and Google Analytics is one reason why.

Because they collect statistics for multiple sites, it's possible for them to build a pretty fair browsing history across multiple sites.

... and Google is really, really good at correlating data.

NoScript (for those using Firefox) is your friend.

Yep...

I put absolutely no faith in the privacy statements made by any commercial site (and now not-for-profit and educational sites as well). They will and do do anything they want with the information they collect, and the laws supposedly protecting you have virtually no teeth at all.

I guess the reason the government isn't all that interested in giving anything more than lip service to privacy is that it's in their interest to let the big, bad commercial entities do their dirty work for them. Then they can claim they didn't realize the extent of the abuse going on! ;-)

One nice thing about Prox is that it allows you to fake a response to almost anything which comes in on a web page.

I have been seeing the same issues with the SETI web pages including on My Account Information page for about 1 week now - partial page load, page refuses to load, long refresh time between pages... etc.

I have had Google Analytics blocked in Firefox using Adblock Plus for a long time now and have not seen the same kind of problem at any other web sites that I frequent that I see here.

I wonder if Google Analytics is part of the blame for the spikes in network traffic Matt mentioned in his post today?
Hello. So the weekend was a bit "noisy" on the network backend. This was mostly due to these network bursts we've been getting. It's still confusing to me why these bursts are happening...

I have long considered Google Analytics in the same category as "ad ware" and "spy ware" that "phones home" with info on a users web site browsing activity and is the reason I have it blocked in my browser.

I thought this was some left over artifact from Dr.A playing last week. I was obviously wrong on that score.

Glad I use FF with NoScript.

I wonder how long it will be until we have a little side panel with google ads, like at PrimeGrid.

That was suggested a long time ago in a donation thread........if every click on the Seti website generated a fraction of a penny for the support or the project.........

Not that I would welcome it......

I would hope that the generosity of the participants could preclude any such commercialization.........

The general procedure is to disable scripting except for approved sites. Unfortunately, you can't hardly browse anything today without having it enabled to some extent.

The third party tools generally make this easier to do and/or offer more flexibility in what gets the axe than the shotgun approach the browsers typically offer.

Please explain; how do I know if I have this tool; where do I turn it off etc.

I've noticed recently the same sorts of page pausing behaviour, etc., and figured it was some server/network issue. I don't use FF (I use plain vanilla IE), nor do I ever install these google or yahoo things on purpose.

If you ues IE7, I turned on the popup blocker and all seems well now. It did require a restart of the browser, though...

Haven't tried this one yet (for Firefox), but looks good, specifically targetted at customizing google adds & analytics etc.

I also have been suffering page pausing. I am using IE6 with a popup blocker enabled.

After seeing this thread I checked IE6 conections during page loading and conections were being made to 209.85.171.127 (Google).

I have setup a rule in my network control software on my comp which sits between the ADSL modem and my LAN to stop any traffic to/from Google (range 209.85.128.0-209.85.255.255) to protect all computers on my network from any site which has this abomination enabled.

Worked like a charm - no more pausing so far.

EDIT: OOPS - spoke too soon. Still very occassionly getting pauses, but when I do I am left with an open conection to "thinman", no data flow, and it happens just before the attempted conection to google would be made.

The last week has been really bad. I have problems ALL the time now, open threads, open posts to write..or upload. And I am tired of it.

But wouldn't that block all access to Google? I use them as a search provider and really like it.
