Optimized Astropulse 4.35 for Windows

Hi Everyone,

A SETI@Home Astropulse optimised application has been released.

This release offers significantly improved performance for SSE & SSE3 capable (or Higher) PC's running Windows.

Here are individual links for all the initial release builds:

Windows AP_4.35 SSE3 Science App:
Intended for Intel & AMD CPUs, running Windows that have a minimum of SSE3 capability.

1 - Astropulse Windows ap_4.35rev24b54_SSE3(AMD/INTEL)

Windows AP_4.35 SSE Science App:
Intended for Intel & AMD CPUs, running Windows that have a minimum of SSE capability

2 - Astropulse Windows ap_4.35rev30b57_SSE(AMD/INTEL)

Build source is located HERE

VERY IMPORTANT!!! Note that these applications are meant for ADVANCED USERS.
A customized app_info.xml file will need to be properly created and edited according to how you run Astropulse i.e. alone, or with a version of the S@H multi beam application.

Instructions: AP app_info.xml advanced user instructions

Remember to take into account that these instructions were written for stock AP release. Be sure that you using AP part of app_info.xml downloaded with this opt app release binaries and not sample part that posted on AP advanced users page.

There will be some known issues and warnings to be aware of:

- As mentioned above, you WILL need to edit or create an appropriate app_info.xml file.
- Ensure you choose a build that your CPU/OS will support. Ask for help If you need assistance determining this.
- Ensure Boinc & seti@Home applications are already properly functioning on your machine, read carefully the documentation readmes and installation instructions.
Known issues:
- There is no support for CPUs below SSE capability
- Borderline OC'ers be aware that you may need to back off to maintain stability, the increased throughput of this application will stress all system components more.
- As Always, use these apps AT YOUR OWN RISK.

And most Importantly of all:
Several people have helped make this build possible. First and foremost, Raistmer & Jason G for leading this effort!!!

Special thanks go to JDWhale & Josef W. Segur, Urs Echternacht & Richard Haselgrove for their expertise, input & meticulous testing of the countless development builds.

To all of you we value your input and would like to hear from you at Lunatics'

Regards,
Gecko

Thanks to Gecko, Raistmer, JasonG, JDWhale, Joe Segur and all other testers.

Can we assume that the absence of an SSE2 version means there was no improvement over SSE? I might try this on an older Northwood after I deplete the cache somewhat. If the average CPH is anywhere near the ball park for the AK MB apps, I will begin running AP.

My congratulations and thanks go to Gecko, Raistmer, JasonG, JDWhale, Joe Segur and all other testers who have made this possible. I'm sure this is up to the same fine standards as your previous work at Lunatics and should make a great difference in the AP crunching time.

Edit-----AP crunch times cut in half, just like my 401K!!

Short answer is no, you can't. It means that work in progress. And only that.

And please, don't forget that any SSE2-enabled host is also SSE-enabled.
And any SSSE3 or SSE4.1 enabled host is also SSE3 enabled. And they all will benefit from opt app.

There are only setiathome_enhanced WUs and astropulse WUs. Assignment to a particular version is done when your host downloads the work. The supplied app_info.xml does list the optimized AP app as being compatible with both 4.35 and 4.36 so previously downloaded work assigned to be done with either version will be kept and done with the optimized app.

Note that the only change between stock 4.35 and 4.36 was a bug fix for a graphic difficulty, and the optimized app is non-graphic.
                                                                Joe

Just the same answer as for traditional SETI MultiBeam tasks: WUs are WUs are WUs. They haven't changed. (Though AP WUs are different from MB WUs).

The WUs can be crunched with the stock AP application v4.35 - or they can be crunched with the stock application v4.36 - or, yes, they can be crunched using the new optimised AP application, either the SSE flavour or the SSE3 flavour. SSE3 is quicker, if your hardware is suitable, but there's not a lot in it.

Still being worked on? At this time of night? I think we can allow them a weekend off after the public release - back to the grindstone on Monday, lads.

As a novice to optimised version at this moment using this on my machine;
Windows optimized S@H Enhanced application by Alex Kan
Version info: SSE3 (AMD/Intel, Core 2-optimized v8-nographics) V5.13 by Alex Kan
SSE3 Win32 Build 41 , Ported by : Jason G, Raistmer, JDWhale

Can I use this to get Astropulse or what do I need to do?

It's version to process MultiBeam tasks.
And posted in this thread app speed up processing of AstroPulse tasks. Different type of SETI data.

To process AstroPulse you need to download AP opt app and edit app_info.xml file (merge MB and AP parts).
But if you novice it's better to continue with only optimised MB app for you, probably, and wait when more detailed guides will be developed.

Yes, you can...

Only have to be careful with the .xml file...

Dowload the opti astropulse and edit your app_info.xml with winpad or wordpad like if it's a text file (it is) like that:
<app_info>
<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>AK_v8_win_SSSE3x.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
<version_num>527</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>AK_v8_win_SSSE3x.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
<app_version>
<app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
<version_num>528</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>AK_v8_win_SSSE3x.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
<app_version>
<app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
<version_num>603</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>AK_v8_win_SSSE3x.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
<app>
<name>astropulse</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>ap_4.35rev24b54_SSE3.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>astropulse</app_name>
<version_num>435</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>ap_4.35rev24b54_SSE3.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</file_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
<app_version>
<app_name>astropulse</app_name>
<version_num>436</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>ap_4.35rev24b54_SSE3.exe</file_name>

</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</file_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>

</app_info>

Save it like as .xml, be sure it not saved as .txt, and this is an example, I'm using AKV8 SSSE3x... If you need more help or for detailed instuctions, please, pm me...

And remember... you need stop BOINC and restart it after that...

Best regards.

How is the performance?

I read here in the forum AP-WUs with stock app on an Intel Quad @ ~ 3.2 GHz = ~ 34 hours.

Now ~ 17 hours? :-D
