Message 802039 - Posted: 25 Aug 2008, 16:21:48 UTC

I have been unable to download workunits since the recent server outage about two weeks ago. I get the annoying error 'Incomplete read of 4250.000000 < 5KB for seti_603.jpg - truncating' and '[error] Checksum or signature error for seti_603.jpg.' I have set Skip Image File Verification in my preferences but it makes no difference. The work units do not appear in my task list and they immediately return bad results, so I have gone from a daily work unit quota of 50 down to 2. This makes troubleshooting very slow. I have tried re-setting with no success. I have tried detaching and re-attaching with no success. I have tried setting HTTP 1.1 to HTTP 1.0 with no success. The problem is affecting two computers so it does not appear to be machine specific. Both computers have processed work units successfully for the past few years. I have run out of ideas now. Does anyone know how I can get BOINC and SETI working again? Thanks, Simon.

Message 802072 - Posted: 25 Aug 2008, 18:35:59 UTC - in response to Message 802039.

Download this copy of seti_603.jpg (9068 bytes, MD5: 75AF6760157FDF8B2178971CB8F27851), shut down BOINC and put the file in your setiathome.berkeley.edu directory. Start BOINC, when the Scheduler tells it the file is needed it should note that the file is already present and skip the download.

Thanks. I will give it a try, but will not find out whether it works until my new work unit quota tomorrow. Simon.

                                                               Joe

You may also need to make the file "read-only" by right clicking and chosing properties then clicking the box.

I have encountered similar problems in the past when I was connected to the net over a 3G mobile data (UMTS) connection. Most mobile networks compress image files which has caused me problems before when downloading a new SETI executable file.

We've stopped redirecting our application downloads through coral cache. Hopefully most of these problems will go away now.

Hi again. No success. I copied seti_603.jpg into the directory and set it to read only. BOINC still tried to download the file and overwrote the good file with a bad copy. BOINC must have reset the read only status? Very annoying! What should I try next? Thanks, Simon.

Simon--The above was the 17th line from your last set of messages copied from BOINC. It looks like you've set one or more preferences locally on this machine. I suggest you re-set those local preferences. I'm not sure where they are in BOINC v6; in v5, the reset is in Advanced > Preferences > then click the Clear button.

                                                               Joe

Not as long as the file is said to be in limbo in the client_state.xml file. If the status of the file isn't at 1 in there, BOINC will always try to download it again. Something like this is needed in client_state.xml

Thanks Jord. That got it! I'm up and running again. There was a slight difference between the client_state.xml files:

My bad file: <status>-200</status>

Your good file: <status>1</status>

I changed my status to 1 and away it went. Still stuck with a two WU quota but that will soon rise as I get crunching WUs again. Thanks to everyone for the advice. Simon.
