I also run on S@H Beta and I started seeing this about 2-3 days ago. One of the moderators over there thought it may be a problem introduced in the scheduler as an unintended result of some mods put into the system to get ready for AP. It is my guess that this will be addressed soon if at all possible.

FWIW, none of my Macs are asking for additional work. Once the error shows up it's all over. Both Tiger and Leopard.

To be quite honest, this is very disappointing. With all the recent server problems, which have dropped my RAC by >1,000 (although it's very slowly coming back up), and now this, I have some major concerns about SETI in the long run. As you can see from my stats, I've been around for a while, and I'm not happy with the outlook.

The project is funded by very little money from private donations. Everything SETI@Home does is essentially new terroritory as there is nothing else out there like SETI@Home (running as long or with as many participants or with the sheer scope of the project). There will be ups and downs as things are discovered and tested.

I would only hope that you can understand that this is the process of learning and the process of science itself. Nothing is perfect. If you can't take the bad with the good, then there's nothing to stop you from leaving. Any loss to the project is a loss indeed and I'm sure Eric would prefer everyone staying, but it is ultimately your choice. The project will have to march on looking for newer participants to replace those who have lost their understanding.

To those experiencing this problem, Matt Lebofsky has addressed the concerns in his latest Technical News post and mentions that a fix is being looked into and will be in place shortly, so please hold tight.

With all due respect, I do understand. Otherwise I wouldn't have hung in here for over 9 years contributing my time, machines, and yes, even cash, to this project.

My post said nothing about leaving, but simply expressed disappointment about the way things have been going for some time (IMHO). However, if the project (or moderator(s)) no longer wants my contributions just say so, and I will, regretfully, take them elsewhere.

Then(arious)'s answer has to be incomplete, because my PPC Mac's are doing it too, and my new Intel Mac,
on which I installed BOINC from scratch, is also exhibiting the same behavior.

Same issue:

I just downloaded the upgrade of BOINC onto my Mac powerbook and cannot obtain work: "Seti@hom Enhanced is not available for your type of computer"

I had this working fine on this laptop in the past.

Are you saying you found something greater than the current (showing) 5.10.45?

I think I found the common denominator to the not available problem.

Everyone that I have looked at is running the standard worker without the app_info file.

Those of us able to get work are running Alex Kan's V8 app for Mac.

Check this post and see if the optimized apps allow you to download work.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=31810&nowrap=true#656269

One caveat, you will have to run the boinc installer again to correct permissions issues.

Thanks!! that fixed it for me!

Here are some instructions I found:

The easiest way I have found is to shut down the boincmanager, then download the optimized client for your processor and expand it.

Go into your hard drive/Library/Application Support/Boinc Data/Projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu folder and copy in all the files from the zip file.

Next step is to reinstall the boincmanager to repair permissions on the folder. It should take about 30 seconds.

It should start up and start crunching with the optimized worker.

Forgive my ignorance, but I know I'm doing something wrong.

I'm running 10.5.4 with an Intel Core Duo.

I went to the link, and downloaded the folder "seti_enhanced-i386-v8-coreduo-nographics". I then copied all the enclosed files into hard drive/Library/Application Support/Boinc Data/Projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu and re-ran the installer. But when it finished, it came back with the same error.

I guess that my two questions are 1) did I download the correct folder (seti_enhanced-i386-v8-coreduo-nographics)? and 2) are there more changes I need to be making after I do that?

Thanks for the help!

You do have the correct app, but a quick question in the message log do you see these lines?

Tue Jul 22 20:56:37 2008||Data directory: /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data
Tue Jul 22 20:56:37 2008|SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform

The most important one is the bolded item.

Your fix might work, but I have no idea how to implement it.
1. What "optimized client" are you talking about? Form where can it be downloaded? How does one "expand" it?
2. Copy all of what files? What/ where is the "zip file"?
3. How does one "reinstall the boincmanager"? Who "repair(s) permissions" and "on" what folder?
And I am not interested if spending half a day figuring it out.

Unfortunately, I honestly don't know what you are even talking 'typing' about...in relation to the fix...where to I find the optimized apps and how do I even know what version I am working on? How do I find the folder to copy a zip file, and how do I zip the file....

I know enough to click on the install, and then seti worked....why aren't they coming up with a fix for me...us....on this issue?
