Message 780864 - Posted: 8 Jul 2008, 23:19:59 UTC

Weekly outage day (to compress/backup BOINC database). It lasted a little longer than usual due to some confusion - unbeknownst to me a recent web code update was made that broke the "stop_web" mechanism which keeps the database quiescent during the outage. It's also taking a long time to recover. Not sure why but we'll see if the clog pushes through. I took advantage of the outage to move server anakin into the closet. We also upgraded the RAID card BIOS to see if that fixes our minor issues with ptolemy's current hardware RAID setup. Well, it's logical volume initialization is still way too slow, but maybe we'll live with that if all future resync's are fast.

Just wrapped up the scoring meeting I mentioned yesterday. The bottom line being our current scoring algorithms for individual signals (spike, guassians, pulses, triplets) are sound, the multiplet scores (interesting groups of signals of a single type) are 99.9% sound, and metacandidate scores (of single sky pixels containing "candidates" like indiviual signals, multiplets, or stuff observed from previous SETI project, as well as interesting celestial objects) are still way up for debate as this is where individual philosophies differ, but we'll probably just go with the easiest solution (multiply all the candidate probabilities together) and see what that list looks like. Jeff will write all this up. Maybe we'll even have a science newsletter.

Jeez... still having a hard time recovering...

The 30my08aa series of tasks are short running (less than 20 min for me). The slowness may be because a lot of small tasks in the system today.

I find the system intriguing (probably the one one who does). One little scripting(?) error in the server yesterday has long term implications. Yesterday's changes, what ever happened, has led to a bunch of system responses (see scarecrow's indicator graphs). But in my case, I'm not getting wu's so my computer is downloading E@H wu's again, to keep my (0,2) day queue filled. The long term implication is that I will now be spending Joules on E@H (instead of seti) for a while. Multiply that by thousands(?) of other hosts, and seti is getting screwed, at least for now.

Thanks for the info Matt!

So why can't I download work-units yet/still???

I might have to branch out and do more than one project if this keeps up.

You need to upload the image somewhere and use an "http://..." url instead of "c:\...."

Matt, any idea as to when we will be able to pull down more S@H workunits?
I'll have about 50GHz sitting idle within the next few hours! ;)

Thanks

Matt,

Workunits are NOT downloading, even though there are workunits to be had. This has been going on since (at least...) 0300 PDT 7/9 and is still (0745) going on. I just checked, and there are about 350k WU's available, but no joy on requesting about 171k seconds worth...

[add]
perhaps we're dealing with another problem with/between the two [edit] download servers [/edit]?

I still have access to the site, and if it was down the forums would be down as well.

Check the server status page:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html

everything except web-driven pages seems to be either "diabled" or "not running"!

Everything apart from a few transitioner & mb splitters appear to to be running on the Server Status Page one thing I have noticed is that the weekly outage notice is still on the front page.

Keep up the great work team
Cheers

Well done you chaps. Goodness knows how you do it all but I am glad we have such super workers doing the jobs that need to be done. Come over and sort out the British NHS IT system next please!

Since the problem started, or at least since Matt (et. al...) started working on the problem, the validaters have mostly been off-line...

[added]
There's almost 1 million WU's waiting to be validated - wait 'til that gets worked thru B4 panic-ing...
